More CNG Stations for Madrid

The city of Madrid will double in one year the number of stations supplying automotive natural gas, known as ‘gasineras’. The aim is to provide drivers with 12 CNG stations by 2016, distributed homogeneously throughout the urban perimeter and accessible from the main access routes into the city. The announcement was made by Madrid mayor Ana Botella, after inaugurating a new Gas Natural Fenosa fueling station in the industrial area of ​​Vicálvaro.

The Mayor pointed out that last year one CNG station was opened in the District of San Blas-Canillejas, and two others will soon follow – in Villaverde and Moncloa-Aravac. All four stations were successfully tendered for by Gas Natural Fenosa.

The declared goal is to move forward in improving air quality within the framework of Spain’s Horizon 2020 plan, launched November 2013. With that goal, the municipal fleet now has more than 1,250 CNG-powered heavy vehicles – 793 buses, 459 municipal garbage trucks and 19 cranes, delivering a significant reduction of nitogen oxide emissions. The pick up of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Madrid is carried out almost entirely with natural gas.

The new self-service station in Vicálvaro is open 24/7 and provides CNG at a pressure of 200 bar 365 days a year. It has been designed to supply the equivalent of 220 light vehicles per day (12.5 GWh / year) with two dispensers.

Currently, there are 42 public stations in Spain for natural gas vehicles, 27 of which are managed by Gas Natural Fenosa.
