Wärtsilä and Cryonorm cooperate on LNG system

Advanced LNG systems for inland waterways will be the focus of a new cooperation between Wärtsilä and Dutch cryogenic vaporizer company Cryonorm Systems.

The cooperation aims to create a standard LNG fuel system for European inland waterway vessels that will reduce costs. It will also be designed to complement the short building time of these vessels.

The companies have analysed several types of vessels operating on European rivers, identifying five as potential targets for an LNG fuel system. The study has also established for both newbuild and retrofit installations.

The system will be based on Wärtsilä’s new LNGPac gas fuel supply system. The standardised and optimised system will be capable of being integrated into an entire Wärtsilä LNG propulsion arrangement, while lowering maintenance requirements and simplifying onboard installation will facilitate the use of clean LNG fuel, the companies said.

“We envisage good potential for LNG as a fuel for inland waterway vessels because of its environmental sustainability and competitive pricing,” said Yves Bui, general manager fuel gas handling, Wärtsilä Ship Power. “By sharing the expertise of Cryonorm with the in-house knowledge and vast experience that we have gained in LNG fuelling systems, we expect to facilitate and accelerate the trend towards cleaner and more efficient inland waterway shipping.”
