Community of Madrid, Spain supports use of natural gas in intercity buses

The Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid, the capital of Spain, is betting to cleaner fuels in its fleet of intercity vehicles for improving air quality. This was confirmed by the Minister of Transport, Housing and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid, Pedro Rollán, who recently visited a natural gas compression facility –at Ciudad del Automóvil de Leganés Industrial Park- that supplies buses operated by Ruiz Group that serve different intercity routes in the region.

The filling station currently supplies compressed natural gas to 74 buses serving in several municipalities in the region, and 18 vehicles will be added during December. The site offers advanced technology: it features three refueling lanes, automatic detection of the vehicle, information display and has the capacity to refuel 21 vehicles per hour.

“Places like this make a positive contribution to improving air quality and therefore the environment, since its [CNG] use in the region’s intercity buses allows us to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and carbon monoxide by 88%.”

Regional Transport Consortium’s intercity buses provide 20,000 daily services, transporting more than 800,000 passengers a day. The refueling station also serves bus fleets of Empresa Martín, S.A., concessionaire of the service Madrid – Leganes – Fuenlabrada, and fleet of Empresa Ruiz, S.A., that covers the route Madrid – Barajas de Melo – Villamayor de Santiago.
