Spanish refuse operator to add compressed natural gas trucks

This year, the Urban Environment Services of Gijon (EMULSA) will introduce two garbage collection trucks powered by compressed natural gas. The information was announced by the president of the company, Fernando Couto, during the board of directors’ session held in the city of Gijon last month.

This pilot project is part of a collaboration agreement reached between the City administration and EDP to improve air quality and energy efficiency. As a result, EMULSA will acquire and fund the two CNG garbage collection trucks, whereas EDP will pay the cost of fuel for a year.

The refuse company has already developed initiatives in this area, such as the incorporation of 17 electric vehicles into the urban hygiene and garden services and the organization of efficient driving and route optimization courses to reduce fuel consumption.
