Spanish Port of Huelva becomes a benchmark in LNG bunkering

The Port of Huelva carried out in 2019 a total of 16 LNG bunkering operations to ships of Baleària & Fred.Olsen. These operations have been performed through tank trucks, both using the conventional TTS system (LNG is supplied from a truck to the ship) and the MTTS (LNG is supplied from multiple trucks to the ship), a technique in which the port was pioneer last year.

In addition to its specialization in this type of MTTS system, which allows 70% savings in operating time, the Port of Huelva has been the only one in the Spanish state system that in 2019 had a barge prepared to supply LNG to ships using the STS system (ship-to-ship).

“These figures are the result of our work for being a national benchmark as a sustainable port, proof of this are the projects that are being launched for the supply of LNG. In addition, we are one of the main base ports in Spain with a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering service, thanks to the commissioning of Cepsa’s Oizmendi multiproduct barge, which joins the bunkering operations from the dock and also helped us become a strategic port in the supply of LNG in the Western Mediterranean”, said the president of the Port Authority of Huelva Pilar Miranda.

The Port of Huelva participates in the main European projects in infrastructure and logistics chains for the supply of LNG, such as the CORE LNGas Hive and LNG Hive2 project.

Last year, a total of 195 LNG bunkering operations were carried out on ships in the Spanish Port System, supplying a total of 81,704 m3 of LNG, according to Gasnam data, a growth trend that continues in 2020, with 35 bunkering operations in the Spanish ports, which totaled a delivery of 12,055 m3 during January.

Due to its environmental and economic benefits, LNG has experienced great growth as a marine fuel in the Iberian Peninsula. To analyze this extremely positive scenario for natural gas both in road and maritime transport, and evaluate the latest in alternative fuel technologies and sustainable mobility, AltFuels Iberia 2020 will be held on 28-30 October at IFEMA Trade Fair Center in Madrid.
