Lithuanian FSRU May Supply LNG for Bunkering

Natural gas supply and trading company LITGAS, part of Lithuania’s state-controlled Lietuvos Energija energy company, is in discussion with Statoil about entering into small scale LNG supply and bunkering. LITGAS states it is working with Statoil to analyze cooperation opportunities and plans to agree on the form of cooperation within the second quarter this year.

“The Klaipėda LNG terminal is the only LNG terminal of such size in the Baltic Sea with the capability to reload LNG to smaller LNG bunkering vessels, such as bunkering ferries, containerships and other LNG propelled vessels, as well as to supply gas to industrial customers in smaller quantities. As new regulations for sulphur emissions came in to force, ship owners are increasingly looking to LNG as a cleaner fuel. The Klaipėda LNG terminal is closer to our potential clients than other terminals with similar capabilities. We have a competitive advantage from that perspective”, says Dominykas Tuckus, CEO of LITGAS.

Opportunity to cooperate in small scale LNG and bunkering areas was included in the 5 year LNG supply contract ensuring minimum regasification regime for the Terminal signed between LITGAS and Statoil in August 2014.

The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), built for Lithuania’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and berthed at the ice-free port of Klaipėda, is part of the region’s quest to reduce dependence on Russia as the sole supplier of natural gas.

The FSRU, named Independence, has a capacity of 170,000 cubic meters and is leased by Klaipedos Nafta AB, the state-owned energy terminal operator, from Norway’s Hoegh LNG Holdings (HLNG).
