Barcelona’s First LNG Station Planned to Open by Year End

Spanish energy companies Gas Natural Fenosa and Petronieves have signed a contract to build a

compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling facility at the Petronieves fuel

station in the Zona Franca district of Barcelona. This will be the first LNG station for trucks in the city,

expected to be operational by year-end.

The natural gas filling station will be located in an area very close to the city’s port and Ronda del Litoral

(B10), which will allow it to serve a large number of vehicles, including fleet vehicles from both

companies.

In fact, Petronieves aims to transform 25 of its diesel trucks to natural gas in the coming years, which

will reduce CO2 emissions by 4,300 tons, NOx by 234 tons and PM10 by 9.5 tons.

The project includes the provision of a double CNG pump for light vehicles CNG and one LNG dispenser

for trucks.The project envisages the creation of a double-tap of CNG for light vehicles and one of LNG for

trucks.

At the moment, there are 42 public natural gas stations in Spain, of which a total of 25 belonging to Gas

Natural Fenosa. Twenty more stations are expected to open in the coming months, four of them by Gas

Natural Fenosa.

In Spain, there are already circulating more than 5,200 vehicles that run on natural gas. A trend that

initially brought together heavy vehicles such as buses and waste collection trucks is now embracing

light vehicles and cars.

The use of natural gas as a transportation fuel contributes to improving air quality, reducing by more

than 85% emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, the main pollutants affecting health. It

also reduces CO2 emissions by up to 30%.
