China’s west-east gas transmission project contributes to low-carbon development

China’s west-to-east gas transmission project has boosted natural gas supply across the country and facilitated the low-carbon transformation of the country’s energy consumption structure, data has shown.

The west-to-east gas pipeline has sent more than 700 billion cubic meters of natural gas to eastern China since it was officially put into operation in 2004. Over the past years, the project has reduced the use of approximately 932 million tonnes of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions and dust by 1.02 billion tonnes and 508 million tonnes, respectively, which is equivalent to adding 3.18 billion hectares of broad-leaved forests.

It has helped increase the share of natural gas in China’s primary energy consumption to 8.4 percent in 2021 from around 2.4 percent in 2003, benefiting nearly 500 million residents nationwide.

In 2021, the annual volume of natural gas transported by the pipeline has, for the first time, exceeded 100 billion cubic meters.

US becomes world’s top LNG exporter for first time ever

The U.S. became the world’s No. 1 exporter of liquefied natural gas for the first time ever last month, as deliveries surged to energy-starved Europe. Output from American facilities edged above Qatar in December after a jump in exports from the Sabine Pass and Freeport facilities.

Gas production has surged by roughly 70% from 2010 and the nation is expected to have the world’s largest export capacity by the end of 2022 once Venture Global LNG’s Calcasieu Pass terminal comes online.

But the U.S.’s position as top LNG shipper may be short-lived. Exports were just a hair above those from Qatar and Australia, and any production issues could affect the rankings. U.S. LNG export terminals sent out a record 1,043 cargoes in 2021, with Asian nations making up nearly half of the destinations and Europe making up one-third, ship tracking data compiled by Bloomberg shows.

The LNG will be stored and transported in tanks designed for this purpose. As explained by the importing company, the distribution to the final customer will be made directly from the Isotank, so the infrastructure of EP Petroecuador will not be used. Deputy minister of hydrocarbons, María Cristina Cadena, among other authorities of the hydrocarbons sector, will participate in the act of receiving the cargo at the deep-water port in Posorja, Guayas province.

The national government is promoting private investment to strengthen the Ecuadorian economy and improve the quality of derivatives that are marketed in the country, in accordance with the provisions of Executive Decree No. 95.

Australia posts record LNG exports in 2021

Australian exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) hit a record high in 2021 of 80.9 million tonnes, according to estimates based on shipping data from EnergyQuest. Significantly, it is likely that 2021 is close to the peak of Australian LNG production.

Exports were up by 3.7% on the 78.0 Mt exported in 2020, and also higher than the 77.6 Mt exported in 2019, before the pandemic. In the current world of supply chain and shipping challenges, the steady increase in Australian LNG exports is a significant achievement.

Reflecting higher exports and stronger international energy prices, EnergyQuest estimates that total 2021 LNG export revenue reached A$48 billion (US$34.5 billion), up 25% from only A$36 billion in 2020. The massive increase in export revenue takes Australia back to the record level achieved in 2019 prior to the pandemic.

The innovative use of battery hybrid technology, combined with a dual-fuel solution. Emissions of carbon dioxide will be reduced by around 25%, SOx and particulate matter by 90% and NOx by 85% from the use of LNG, while the newbuilds will also meet the IMO’s Tier 3 NOx emissions limitations for the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The European shortsea ro-ro carrier is also looking to extend the use of the fuel to other vessels based on possible trial cargoes backed by customers, according to energy and sustainability manager Daniel Gent.

Germany: World’s first zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell push boat tested in Berlin

After almost two years of construction at the shipyard Hermann Barthel GmbH in Derben and the three-day transfer to Berlin’s Westhafen, the testing of the innovative hydrogen fuel cell push boat Elektra has now begun. It will serve as a role model as the first zero-emission vessel, since its energy system is designed to be transferable to a wide range of inland and coastal vessel types.
