The advantage of CityGas (PNG-Piped Natural Gas) is that it provides feasible and safe fuel. This scheme has been implemented in 470 districts in the country so far. CityGas is permitted by marking a land territory for each district. One land territory includes up to three districts and has been allowed in 228 land territories at present. It was aimed to extend the benefits of the scheme to 53 percent of the country’s population. The distribution in the districts recently integrated into the scheme is being done through tender procedures.

MNGL to extend piped gas to 15 areas in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad
Pune: The Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), which supplies piped natural gas (PNG) to households, has identified more than 15 areas in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, where it plans to extend its PNG services in the next few months.

The MNGL has so far provided over 3.5 lakh connections of piped gas in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits. The new areas on the radar include Dhayri, Jambhulwadi, Ambegaon and older parts like Dhanori, Vishrantwadi etc. In the PCMC limits, piped gas will be made available in Ravet, parts of Chinchwad, Moshi, Chikhli and Vishalnagar.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) plans to offer 65 city gas distribution licenses in the next bidding round. Bids will soon be invited for the 65 Geographical Areas (GA) identified for the eleventh bidding round, the downstream regulator said in a public notice.

The Assam government has decided to introduce 200 electric and 100 CNG buses to reduce carbon emission, according to a report from ANI. Upon procurement, these buses will be pressed into service in the city of Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that the diesel-run state transport buses in the Guwahati city will be replaced with electric and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.
Additionally, the state government has decided to provide one-time financial assistance of ₹ 10,000 to inter-district bus drivers and handymen, who were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in nationwide lockdown. The government will also provide ₹ 15,000 to temple priests and naamghorias.

GAIL will be laying pipeline infrastructure to connect consumption centres to gas sources while also augmenting its renewable energy portfolio, GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Manoj Jain said.
The firm is laying around 6,000-kilometres of pipeline, including a west coast to east coast pipeline from Mumbai to Jharsuduga in Odisha via Nagpur. It currently has around 13,700-km of natural gas pipeline network. In India, companies ranging from Reliance Industries to Indian Oil Corporation and NTPC have announced ambitious plans for generating hydrogen. GAIL too joins that list now. GAIL, Jain said, has the largest and most diverse LNG portfolio in India that can offer both stable prices and reliable supply to consumers.

Air quality commission asks U.P., Haryana, Rajasthan to shift NCR industries to piped natural gas
The Commission for Air Quality Management on Thursday, August 12, directed Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan to prepare a time-bound action plan to shift all identified industries units in the National Capital Region (NCR) to piped natural gas (PNG).

The commission has asked these States to audit and inspect the industries, which are already connected to PNG supply, and ensure that these units are not using any other polluting fuels like coal etc.
It has also asked the three States to develop an action plan to supply PNG in the industrial areas in the NCR where infrastructure and gas supply are not available. In the NCR districts of Haryana, 408 of the 1,469 identified industrial units have already shifted to PNG, whereas in U.P., 1,161 of the 2,273 such units switched over to PNG. However, only 124 of the 436 such units in Rajasthan have made the shift so far. The States have also been directed to maintain strict vigil to prevent the use of unapproved fuels in the NCR, and take stringent action against defaulting units. The three States have been given time till August 31 to submit a compliance report to the commission.

Of the 1,381 km-long gas pipeline, 873 km pass through 11 districts of the State, which are rich in various raw materials and agricultural products.

Soaring fuel price forces more people to favour CNG vehicles
KOCHI: The rising fossil fuel price is leading many Kochiites to opt for green vehicles by converting their existing petrol/diesel vehicles into CNG. As many as 288 vehicles under the Ernakulam RTO limit were converted to CNG ones till August 14 this year, against 473 vehicles last year.

The number of vehicles being converted into CNG ones has increased after the pandemic-induced restrictions were lifted last year. The conversion continued to keep its momentum from June last year, and every month more than 40 vehicles were converted till the second lockdown was imposed in May this year. The highest number of vehicles converted in a month under the Ernakulam RTO limit before the pandemic was in February last year – 23 vehicles. Soon after the state government lifted the restrictions, conversion of vehicles has picked up momentum with 30 in July and another 30 in just 14 days of August. The highest number of vehicles converted in a month under Ernakulam RTO was in November last year with 87 vehicles, followed by 79 in January this year.

Gujarat Gas raises CNG, industrial PNG prices
Ahmedabad: The state-run city gas distribution (CGD) company Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL) has raised the compressed natural gas (CNG) price across its authorized geographical areas within and outside Gujarat.

However, the company has kept unchanged the price of natural gas supplied to its residential consumers. According to GGL website, the CNG price has been increased to Rs 54.45 per kg (inclusive of taxes and duties) in Gujarat, which shows a rise of Rs 2 per kg over its previous tariff of Rs 52.45/kg. The new price is effective from August 24. The company serves about 7 lakh CNG consumers through its network of around 450 CNG stations in Gujarat. Meanwhile, GGL also hiked industrial PNG prices to Rs 37.51 per standard cubic meter (SCM) for ceramic and sanitaryware units in Morbi and Surendranagar.
Gujarat Gas provides 6.5 million metric standard cubic meter per day (mmscmd) to ceramic and sanitaryware units in Morbi and Surendranagar.

IGL hikes CNG price by 90p in city; PNG rates up too

The company has been forced to service CNG and PNG consumers with imported gas, which costs eight times more than domestic gas, because of rising demand. After the revision, CNG costs Rs 50.90 per kg and PNG Rs 30.86 per unit in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. In Gurgaon, PNG costs Rs.29.10 per unit. In Kaithal, CNG costs Rs.52.30 per kg. In Karnal, CNG costs Rs 52.30 per kg and PNG Rs.29.71 per unit. In Muzzaffarnagar, Meerut and Shamli, CNG sells for Rs.58.15 per kg and PNG Rs. 33.92 per unit.

Reliance Industries Ltd and its partner BP Plc of UK in December last year started putting the second wave of gas discoveries in eastern offshore KG-D6 block to production with R-Series started flowing gas. In April they started output from the Satellite Cluster fields. This helped raise India’s gas production by almost 20 per cent, oil ministry data showed.
This proved to be good news for LNG. As domestic production has stalled, LNG imports have filled the gap. In 2020, LNG demand increased by around 14 per cent to reach 25.7 million tonnes, with India climbing the ranks of the world’s most important LNG markets.

With its workforce peaking, CGL has opened the last of its 12 accommodation centres and is ramping up its community workforce advisor programme, which is designed to ensure smooth relations between pipeline workers and the local communities near where they work. Construction is nearly a third complete and all stages of construction are now underway, CGL said. USA: BP and Chevron buy into renewable natural gas
UK supermajor BP has announced a 15-year agreement with Maryland-based CleanBay Renewables to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) for the US transportation sector, specifically the California market.

While several RNG ventures using agricultural feedstocks use cow manure from dairy farms, CleanBay’s RNG is processed from poultry litter, including manure, feathers, and bedding.
The poultry litter is mixed with water in an anaerobic digester, which uses micro-organisms to break down the matter and produce biogas. The biogas includes methane and can be processed into RNG to fuel vehicles. Renewable natural gas is a growing energy source in the energy transition — Chevron also extended an RNG partnership on Tuesday — since the feedstock, often cow manure, would have released significant greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere if it was not used in the anaerobic process.
In this agreement, BP will buy the RNG from CleanBay and sell the fuel to its customers, initially in California. Chevron is also working with California BioEnergy to produce RNG from dairy farms, announcing its first production last year.

Shippers can transfer small-scale LNG into these locations by reloading from the Tema facility, which will serve as a regional LNG hub.
The terminal’s ability to reload any volume of LNG from 7,000 cu m to 30,000 cu m enhances the overall economics of small-scale liquefied natural gas in the region, guaranteeing that supply to smaller regional markets can be as per their demand. The completion of the Tema LNG terminal construction will result in an LNG hub with a 180,000-cu m storage capacity. It is worth noting that the West African region has a large extractive industry with a high demand for power, which is now met primarily by expensive distillate fuels. The region requires a total of 1 million mt/year of LNG for power generation and displacement of distillations in the extractive sector. The figure is likely to increase to around 1.8 million mt/year, as countries in the region invest in new generations and switch away from heavier fuels.

The solution is known as Factory LNG and involves a 0.05mn metric tons/year unit, the size of a 40-foot ISO shipping container, that can be transported via standard heavy-lift shipping and trucking logistics. It includes Man’s high-speed, oil-free, integrated motor compressor technology.
The companies believe the newly developed infrastructure has the potential to unlock liquefaction capabilities at multiple locations around the globe. The system is designed and manufactured to be scalable so customers can increase the number of Factory LNG units used as the market grows, delivering LNG at pace with demand, they added.

CLEANCOR will work to educate Port NOLA customers and other local stakeholders regarding the environmental and financial benefits of LNG bunkering. In collaboration with Port NOLA, the company will develop options for infrastructure development that integrate into Port NOLA’s long-range planning.
CLEANCOR will also provide options for LNG bunkering that are compatible with forecasted customer demand and collaborate with Port NOLA to obtain Federal, state, and other authorizations and permits needed to develop the required infrastructure and operations. Both CLEANCOR and Port NOLA will identify, attract and serve customers in Port NOLA’s jurisdiction that use LNG fuel, jointly solicit sources of grant funding to help incentivize early adopters and collaborate to share information on infrastructure necessary to support LNG bunkering.

INDONESIA APPROVES CCUS PLAN AT TANGGUH LNG
Indonesia’s upstream regulator SKKMigas has approved the plan of development for Ubadari field and Vorwata carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) at BP-operated Tangguh LNG project in Papua Barat, the Japanese partners in the project said in a joint statement issued on August 30.

The new development estimates a potential additional recovery of 1.3 trillion ft3 of gas, from both Ubadari and Vorwata fields. Ubadari field development is fast-tracked as a result of the successful appraisal programme and will be produced via normally unmanned installations connected to offshore pipeline to Tangguh facility. Meanwhile, the Vorwata CCUS development will see approximately 25mn metric tons of CO2 injected back to the Vorwata reservoir to eliminate carbon venting and provide incremental gas production through enhanced gas recovery, the partners said. The CO2 injection will remove up to 90% of the reservoir-associated CO2, currently representing nearly half of the Tangguh LNG emissions.

Out of the four Australian LNG ventures that have long-term sales contracts with China, three – North West Shelf venture, Shell’s QCLNG and Origin Energy’s Australia Pacific LNG – supplied more than the contracted volume. Also, every other Australian LNG project shipped cargoes to Chinese buyers, even those without specific Chinese contracts.

The Krk LNG terminal is a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Omišalj on the island of Krk, Croatia. It commenced operations on January 1, 2021, and has a capacity of 2.1MTPA.
The terminal provides natural gas for the Croatian market, and the terminal is also connected to export into neighboring natural gas markets including Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia.

The vessel, which has yet to be officially launched, will be delivered to UECC in the first half of 2022 along with the third vessel on order. The first is expected to be delivered to UECC in the autumn of this year. The latest vessels will join two LNG-powered pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) that UECC has had in operation for the last four years – Auto Eco and Auto Energy.
Operational efficiency and further lower emissions are expected to result from battery power onboard the vessel. Once all three vessels are delivered, UECC will have five lower-emission PCTCs out of its 17-vessel fleet.

Petrobras on on 18 August cleared Excelerate to lease its Bahia regasification terminal in an important step toward opening Brazil’s natural gas market. Petrobras is currently analyzing Excelerate’s revised lease proposal to ensure that it meets the required technical criteria. Excelerate presented the new bid in July after Petrobras disqualified its original proposal because of the inclusion of a termination clause.
If the deal moves ahead, Excelerate will take control of the terminal by 31 December.

They’re set for delivery from 2024. Shipping, the backbone of global trade, accounts for almost 3% of man-made carbon dioxide emissions. The level has been rising in recent years, according to data from the International Maritime Organization.
Last year, IMO rules designed to curb air pollution by limiting the sulfur content of marine fuel came into force. Maersk isn’t the only shipper starting to make the transition. Oil tanker owner Euronav NV has ordered new ships capable of one day running on ammonia or liquefied natural gas.
They’ll replace older ships in the company’s fleet, saving about one million tons of carbon dioxide a year. Maersk has the option for four more of the ships to be delivered in 2025. The UK Government launched the Tees Valley Hydrogen Hub, and initiated the Hydrogen Transport Hub Demonstration competition to showcase real-world hydrogen transport technology solutions. Ricardo submitted a bid with Stagecoach, one of the UK’s main public transport operators, to demonstrate a retrofit hydrogen fuel cell bus. The Department for Transport named the Ricardo and Stagecoach bid as one of the competition winners and has awarded funding to build a one-off vehicle which will be available for demonstration in the Tees Valley Hydrogen Hub from February 2022.
Ricardo will develop a scalable, modular solution, enabling it to be installed, with minimal adaption, to multiple single and double decker platforms. The modular concept may also be saleable as a ‘new fuel cell’ module to coach builders across the European Union enabling them to develop new fuel cell buses by taking a rolling chassis and applying their coach build body alongside the fuel cell module solution.
