Helgoland Ferry to Use Bomin Linde LNG
German shipping company Cassen Eils and Bomin Linde LNG have signed a contract for the supply of LNG (liquefied natural gas) for the newbuild Helgoland Ferry. Cassen Eils, a subsidiary of the EMS AG Group, will operate the Helgoland ferry out of Cuxhaven, transporting passengers and cargo to the North Sea island using environmentally friendly LNG from May 2015.
“For Germany’s first LNG-propulsion newbuilding, we are well positioned,” explains Bomin Linde LNG managing director Ruben Benders. “The order is an important step toward establishing LNG as ship fuel in Germany.”
The refueling of the ship will be carried out in a manner certified by DNV GL (classification society) and the approved State bunker process.”The technical process is similar to the process of bunkering of traditional fuels. Since the liquefied natural gas is cooled to about -163 ° C, but safety precautions and appropriate training of staff are required, “says Claus Hirsch, technical inspector of the shipping company. “From our experience with this pilot project, a study will deliver recommendations for best practices,” Hirsch explains.
Supplied by Bomin Linde LNG, LNG will annually replace about 1.2 million liters marine diesel that would be required as fuel for a comparable conventional ship.
Bomin Linde LNG plans to erect a storage facility in Hamburg which will serve as a base for delivering LNG to neighbouring ports. “The Port of Hamburg plays a pioneering role in supplying LNG and is therefore a key international centre for Bomin Linde LNG,” says Mahinde Abeynaike, also Managing Director of Bomin Linde LNG.
The under-construction hull of the new Helgoland ship has been undocked from the Hulcon shipyard in Szczecin (Poland) and is being delivered by tug via the Kiel Canal to the Fassmer shipyard in Berne (near Bremen). The ship is scheduled for completion in May 2015.
The new Helgoland ship was commissioned on 30 million euros at the Fassmer shipyard in Berne. The ship will be 83 m long and 13 m wide and has a depth of 3.6 m. The new Wärtsilä dual-fuel LNG drive has a capacity of 5,000 KW and can deliver 20 knots top speed. The ship has 1,180 seats spread over eight salon areas, an atrium with a glass elevator on three decks and three upper deck areas. Up to ten ten-foot container and general cargo are transported.
