Piped Cooking Gas Coming To Every Home In Ranchi Soon

Piped Natural Gas (PNG) expansion is an important part of India’s transition towards cleaner household energy and energy security. Supplying PNG to homes is part of City Gas Distribution (CGD) network development. Though many homes and hotels have got piped cooking gas, not all have gained the supply.

Work is in progress, said a senior Gail ( India) Ltd., country’s leading state- owned natural gas processing and distribution company.

Such a network comprises pipelines and allied facilities that serve households, commercial establishments, and industrial units.

Entities authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) develop it. PNGRB has authorised entities in 309 Geographical Areas (GAs). Together, these areas span the entire mainland of the country. As of 18 August 2026, there were 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections across the country.

To expand PNG coverage further, the Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections was launched on 18 August 2026. The Scheme came into effect from 1 September 2026.

About the Scheme

The Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections seeks to accelerate the growth of active domestic PNG connections. It aims to enable households to access clean, safe and affordable cooking gas through piped supply.

The Scheme provides incentives to CGD entities for converting unbilled connections into active, billed connections. It also incentivises the expansion of the PNG network into new areas. The Scheme will run in two tranches spread over six months.

A minimum number of connections has been fixed for every Geographical Area under the scheme. During the performance period, eligible CGD entities must add billed domestic connections beyond this threshold. For each such incremental connection, the entity earns an additional allocation of 200 Standard Cubic Metres (SCM) of gas. This gas is domestically produced Administered Price Mechanism (APM) gas, which is priced lower.

The additional allocation will replace the costlier Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). CGD entities presently buy this LNG for their Compressed Natural Gas (Transport) segment. Substituting it with cheaper APM gas brings down their overall gas sourcing cost.

The payback period on capital spent for a domestic connection is therefore expected to shrink. It is expected to fall from about ten years to nearly three years. Companies therefore gain a strong commercial reason to connect homes faster.

Benefits of PNG for Households

PNG offers several important benefits for households, including ease of use, cost savings, and uninterrupted availability. The following are the key advantages of PNG for household users:

Safe and secure: Gas travels through underground pipelines at low pressure, so cylinders need not be stored or handled. Being lighter than air, it rises and disperses quickly in the rare event of leakage.

Everyday convenience: No booking, storing or changing of cylinders is required. Gas remains available at home round the clock. Bills are based on metered use, much like electricity or water.

Lower costs: A household pays only for the gas it actually uses. On a per-unit energy basis, PNG usually costs less than LPG. Monthly fuel expenses therefore come down over time.
Cleaner environment: PNG burns cleaner and gives off fewer pollutants than conventional cooking fuels. Indoor air stays healthier and carbon emissions remain lower.

Assured supply: Pipeline supply is continuous and free from the logistics of cylinder delivery. Homes in high-rise buildings and crowded urban colonies benefit the most.
Initiatives for PNG Expansion

PNG expansion is being supported through measures for faster approvals, rationalised taxes, and streamlined infrastructure development. Digital platforms and awareness initiatives are making household transitions to PNG simpler, quicker, and more accessible:

Streamlined Regulatory Approvals: An Accelerated Approval Framework has been issued under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026.

The Order also introduces uniform charges for pipeline Right-of-Way (RoW), which cover permission to use land or public areas for laying PNG pipelines. Applications will now be processed on priority and within defined timelines.

Reduced Value Added Tax (VAT): States are being encouraged to lower VAT on natural gas to 5 percent. Several States have already done so, making piped gas cheaper for consumers.
National PNG Drive 2.0: The nationwide drive was held from 1 January to 30 June 2026 to accelerate DPNG connections across Geographical Areas.

Unified PNG registration portal: A single-window digital platform is being developed. It will make applying for and tracking new connections simple and quick.

Towards Cleaner, Connected Homes

Clean cooking fuel at home adds to the comfort, health and dignity of every household. Now in effect, the new Scheme aligns the commercial interests of gas companies with this national goal. As pipelines reach more areas and more kitchens, dependence on cylinders steadily declines. Piped gas is thus set to become a natural part of everyday living in  Ranchi among all cities in India.

GEL Faces Heat Over PNG Service Woes in South Gujarat

SURAT : Thousands of PNG consumers across Surat and South Gujarat are allegedly battling delayed connections, weak grievance redressal, irregular meter readings and slow emergency response, prompting social activist Darshan Naik to submit a written representation to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel seeking immediate intervention against Gujarat Energy Limited (GEL).

Naik alleged that GEL continues to rely on systems that are nearly two decades old despite having a customer base of around 12.53 lakh across Surat-Bharuch-Ankleshwar, Hazira, Navsari and Valsad.

“It is extremely unfortunate that a company serving lakhs of consumers is still operating with a system that does not meet present-day customer requirements,” Naik said in his representation.

According to the representation, Surat has only one main customer service centre in Adajan to handle new connections, complaints and other consumer services. Naik claimed applicants are forced to wait in long queues, while several new PNG connection applications remain pending for months.

He also alleged that consumers have no effective online mechanism to track applications, while inadequate technical staff and delays by contract agencies are adding to the problem.

“People who have paid the required charges for new connections are being forced to repeatedly visit offices because there is no transparent tracking system,” Naik said.

The representation further raised concerns over alleged delays in responding to gas leaks, pipeline damage and supply disruptions. It also alleged irregular meter readings, with some consumers receiving bills covering four to six months together, creating a sudden financial burden.

Naik has sought additional customer service centres in Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Bharuch, a mandatory timeline for new connections, an online tracking portal and mobile app, stronger 24×7 emergency response and regular meter reading.

He has also demanded an audit of contract agencies, district-level grievance committees, public hearings by officials and a high-level inquiry into GEL’s operations, including an independent administrative and technical audit.

ONGC finds natural gas in Mahanadi Basin off Odisha coast

Bhubaneswar: Marking a significant step in India’s push to strengthen energy security, govt-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has discovered natural gas in the deep waters of the Mahanadi Basin off Odisha coast. The find was made at MDW-28, the first well drilled under ONGC’s ongoing deep-water exploration programme in the basin. The well has shown encouraging gas flow and steady reservoir pressure, suggesting the presence of a commercially promising gas-bearing structure.

In a statement issued on Monday, ONGC said the well was perforated on Sept 18 after detailed analysis of geological and geophysical data. Soon after the operation, gas began flowing at a healthy rate, supported by stable reservoir pressure.

The drilling campaign began on July 25, 2026, when Union petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched the operations by spudding the MDW-28 well, also identified as MN-DW18-1-H-D, in the offshore Mahanadi Basin. The exploration drive is part of the Centre’s Samudra Manthan initiative, which seeks to fast-track offshore oil and gas exploration and production.

Terming it a major milestone for India’s offshore energy exploration, Puri said the discovery, along with other finds in the area, opens up the potential for cluster development through shared facilities under the PNG Rules, 2025, providing a pathway to bring deep-water resources into production more efficiently.

ONGC said its senior leadership, including chairman Arun Kumar Singh, director of technology and field services Vikram Saxena and director of exploration Om Prakash Sinha, visited the drillship during the campaign to assess progress and engage with the operating team.

The company said the discovery, together with other finds in the area, may be developed using shared infrastructure under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, 2025. This model could improve the economics of deep-water projects and enable quicker monetisation of offshore resources.

ONGC added that it remains focused on expanding exploration in deep-water and ultra-deep-water areas to identify new hydrocarbon reserves.

Gastech 2026: GAIL CMD Deepak Gupta calls diversification key pillar of LNG procurement strategy

New Delhi: Deepak Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, named diversification as a key pillar of the company’s approach to liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok. According to a statement GAIL issued on Tuesday, Gupta “highlighted diversification as a key pillar of GAIL’s approach to navigating an increasingly dynamic LNG environment.”

The statement set out what that diversification involves. “Expanding sourcing across geographies, enhancing trading capabilities and making greater use of spot cargoes can provide the flexibility needed to respond to changing market conditions,” it said. Spot cargoes are single shipments bought outside long-term supply contracts.

Gupta made the remarks on a Strategic Conference panel titled “The New LNG Order: Leadership Strategies for Energy Security and Growth.” He shared the stage with three other speakers: Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President for Gas, Power and New Energy at Nigeria’s NNPC Limited, Jaffee Arizon Suardin, Director of Integrated Logistics and Infrastructure at Indonesia’s Pertamina, and Sue-Ern Tan, Head of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Regional Cooperation Centre. Amena Bakr, Head of Middle East and OPEC+ Insights at Kpler, moderated the session. Gastech 2026 runs in Bangkok from September 14 to 17.

Flexibility in destination and pricing

The panel looked at the pressures reshaping the global LNG trade. According to GAIL, these ranged “from changing supply routes and geopolitical developments to evolving demand patterns, affordability considerations and the growing need for flexibility across the LNG value chain.”

Two contract terms came up as ways to make supply more resilient. “The discussion also underscored the importance of destination flexibility and diversified pricing/indexation structures in strengthening supply resilience while keeping LNG accessible and competitive,” the statement said. Destination flexibility lets a buyer send a cargo to a market other than the one named in the contract. Indexation refers to the benchmark an LNG price is linked to.

Shifting demand centres

Demand is the other side of the market GAIL expects to change. “As new LNG projects commissioned over the past decade add to global supply and consumption patterns continue to evolve, understanding emerging demand centres will be critical to shaping the next phase of the LNG market,” the statement said.

GAIL plans major expansion in gas, petrochemicals and clean energy, says Chairman

For India, the statement expects LNG to stay central. “For India and other emerging Asian economies, LNG is expected to remain an important enabler of energy security, economic growth and the transition towards a lower-emission energy mix,” it said.

GAIL said its own priorities follow the same line. The company “remains focused on building a diversified and resilient LNG portfolio, expanding its global partnerships and strengthening its presence across the LNG value chain,” according to the statement.

The company also reported profitability during the financial year despite these challenges. However, the figures for total sales volumes, revenue and net profit were not provided in the release.

Meanwhile, shareholders approved a final dividend of 75 per cent for FY26, in addition to the interim dividend of 162.5 per cent announced earlier.

IGL operates in the city gas distribution sector, supplying CNG for vehicles and PNG to households and other consumers.

The company’s expansion of its CNG station network and addition of new PNG connections during FY26 reflect continued growth in its gas distribution operations, even as global energy market uncertainty remains a challenge for the sector.

MNGL Boosts Talegaon Gas Capacity to 7 Lakh SCMD, Strengthens Pune Network

Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) has expanded the gas handling capacity at its Talegaon receiving terminal as a part of a larger effort to strengthen natural gas supply across Pune. The facility can now handle up to 7 lakh standard cubic metres per day (SCMD), compared with its earlier capacity of 75,000 SCMD. The upgraded system was commissioned and brought into the MNGL network on September 11 following work carried out by GAIL and MNGL.

The project is aimed at improving the reliability and flexibility of Pune’s city gas distribution network as demand for CNG and piped natural gas (PNG) continues to increase.

One of the major works completed under the project was pipeline looping at Talegaon. The work was completed in August and has improved the connection between RT Talegaon and RT Pune at Chikhali. The additional pipeline route will give MNGL greater flexibility in managing gas supply.

The company has also replaced the earlier 75,000-SCMD gas handling skid at Talegaon with a new unit capable of handling 0.7 MMSCMD. Associated piping, connection and integration work has also been completed.

MNGL said the upgrades have increased the Pune network’s throughput capacity by around 3 lakh SCMD. The improved system might raise gas pressure by as much as 1.5 bar in some of the more distant areas of the city’s distribution network.

The additional capacity will support a more consistent supply to CNG stations and reduce problems linked to low pressure. It will also help the network accommodate demand from new CNG stations and an increasing number of PNG consumers.

Govt rolls out GOBARdhan guidelines, assures full CBG offtake, sets price

The government has notified detailed operational guidelines for the ₹23,731 crore GOBARdhan scheme aimed at developing India’s compressed biogas (CBG) sector, ensuring full offtake of a CBG plant and also introducing a pricing mechanism. The Union Cabinet had last month approved the scheme to convert India’s farm refuse and municipal waste into clean fuel and organic manure. The scheme will make use of the country’s agricultural residue, cattle dung, press mud, organic waste in cities, and other biomass resources.

Under the scheme guidelines, CBG producers have been assured offtake of up to 100 per cent of the CBG available for sale, subject to technical and operational feasibility.

The guidelines also introduce a mandatory CBG obligation for city gas distribution (CGD) companies supplying gas to compressed natural gas (CNG) and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) segments.

The obligation has been set at 3 per cent for FY27, 4 per cent for FY28 and 5 per cent from FY29 onwards.

The government also introduced a new CBG pricing framework.

An initial Administered CBG Price (ACP) of ₹2,110 per million British thermal unit (MBTU), equivalent to about ₹98 per kg of CBG at 95 per cent methane content, excluding taxes and compression charges, has been set for a minimum of 10 years. That is, until March 31, 2036, unless extended or otherwise modified.

The government will provide CBG affordability support to the Synchro Operator for 10 years, capped at ₹10 per kg, to help bridge the affordability gap, the guidelines state.

Under the rules, there would be no take-or-pay obligation for a CGD entity in the first year. From the second year, it will have a take-or-pay obligation of up to 90 per cent of the annual nominated quantity.

CBG producers, meanwhile, will face a supply-or-pay obligation of up to 50 per cent of annual contracted quantity from the second year.

For new CBG plants, the government has decided to provide financial assistance of ₹1.25 crore per tonne per day (TPD) of eligible CBG capacity. This is subject to an overall cap of ₹30 crore per project.

Existing biogas plants upgraded to produce CBG can receive ₹0.60 crore per TPD, capped at ₹5 crore per project.

The guidelines also mandate real-time monitoring, online gas-quality measurement and automatic shut-off systems for beneficiaries.

India plans LNG storage boost, a pipeline tariff surcharge to support

India is considering a plan to set up 15 additional overground liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks across the country, boosting the nation’s storage capacity by about two weeks , said three people aware of the plan. The plan to build the critical storage capacity will require an investment of ₹15,000 crore, adding to the country’s existing capacity of 12 days across more than 20 tanks, the people said.

To support the project, the gas regulator may bring an additional surcharge of about 10% on the pipeline tariff paid by user sectors such as city gas and fertilizers, one of the people said.

The proposed storage comes as India relies on imports for nearly half of its natural gas consumption. LNG imports have become more expensive amid supply disruptions caused by the war in West Asia, pushing up the country’s gas import bill even as import volumes have declined. Additional storage could also help protect consumers from a sharp increase in prices during a surge in global prices.

“Apart from ensuring availability, a key factor behind setting up reserves is to ensure affordable prices during a global price surge,” said Manas Majumdar, leader, oil and gas sector, PwC India. If India imports LNG at a cheaper rate and stores, “it can be of great advantage when global prices are high. This will cushion the Indian market and consumers from higher global prices.”

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), the petroleum and natural gas ministry and state-run gas marketing companies, including GAIL (India) Ltd, Indian Oil Corp. and Petronet LNG Ltd, are in talks to set up the storage capacity, the people said. The proposed reserves would add to the country’s existing inventory of about 60 days of natural gas and LNG, including supplies in pipelines and in transit.

Changing mix

India has diversified its natural gas import sources since the West Asia war, but Qatar’s absence leaves some gaps.

Tariff impact

Currently, the there are two tariff rates in the country as per zones. The tariff rate for upto 300 kilometres is ₹54 per million metric British thermal units (mmBtu) and ₹110.86 beyond 300 kilometers.

“The tariffs for consumers may go up by ₹4-5 per month. The cost of the surcharge will be democratized and will spread across the ecosystem. The eventual impact on the consumer would be not be significant,” said the second person.

The person added that as the plan takes a concrete shape, it would be decided as to how the impact of the additional charge would be divided across the value chain to ensure minimum possible increase on the consumer tariff.

The development assumes significance as India has imposed restrictions on LNG use by industrial consumers amid supply disruptions, although these have since been gradually eased. Refiners and gas marketing companies could nevertheless face tighter supplies in the coming months as Europe’s winter heating demand picks up, potentially adding to pressure on LNG prices.

Among key consumers, city gas distribution companies consume about 37 million standard cubic metres a day (mmscmd), including household PNG and CNG, while the fertilizer sector used 58 mmscmd and oil refiners consumed 22 mmscmd in FY25. CNG is largely catered to through domestic gas, while other sectors are highly dependent on imports.

Overall natural gas consumption in India is projected to reach 297-365 mmscmd by 2030 and 495-630 mmscmd by 2040. Industrial and commercial demand is expected to grow 10-15% by 2030, according to projections by the regulator.

“It is extremely important to create a storage and should be part of any emergency supply plan, particularly when you are heavily dependent on import of a particular commodity,” said Anil Razdan, former additional secretary at the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas. “Storage for LNG is something which was visualized two decades earlier but unfortunately, we did not act on it.”

West Asia imports

Mint earlier reported that the PNGRB proposed building overground natural gas storage facilities near existing LNG terminals to buffer against supply disruptions in West Asia caused by the war.

“The surcharge would support the capex of the marketing companies,” the second person said, adding that the storage facilities would be set up near LNG regasification terminals in the country.

India currently has eight operational onshore LNG terminals, with combined regasification capacity of 52.7 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa), equivalent to about 190 mmscmd. Several other land-based terminals and floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) are at various stages of development.

Around 55% of India’s LPG imports were sourced from West Asia and routed through the Strait of Hormuz before the war.

Natural gas imports stood at $13.4 billion in FY26, according to commerce ministry data, of which Qatar accounted for about 42%. In FY27, Qatar accounts for about 3.8% of LNG imports. Currently, natural gas comprises of 6% India’s energy basket, and the government aims to raise its share to 15% by 2030.

Currently, the US is the top supplier of LNG to India, resulting in a higher import bill because of longer voyage times and higher freight charges.

Queries emailed to spokespersons for the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas, PNGRB, Indian Oil Corp., GAIL (India) Ltd, Petronet LNG remained unanswered at press time.

Cost not unreasonable

Razdan said the cost of developing the infrastructure would eventually be transferred to the consumer, but that a moderate increase should not materially affect them.

“The cost of it has to be imposed on the consumer, and as long as it is moderate and affordable I would say given the situation it is not unreasonable. We already have a pipeline network and this kind of a fallback is absolutely necessary,” he said.

Natural gas imports stood at $13.3 billion in FY26, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), of which Qatar accounted for about 42%. In FY27, Qatar accounts for about 3.8% of LNG imports. Currently, natural gas comprises of 6% India’s energy basket, and the government aims to raise its share to 15% by 2030.

Rajesh Mediratta, managing director and chief executive officer of Indian Gas Exchange, said growing demand for natural gas would require additional storage capacity.

“Demand is growing in CNG and PNG, along with fertilizer, industrial and commercial demand too. Additional reserves would be helpful for the country,” he said.

Amit Shah to launch India’s first LNG-powered train on September 27: Check details

India’s first LNG-powered train: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will flag off the country’s first LNG-powered (Liquefied Natural Gas) train from Sabarmati Station on Sunday, September 27. The move is a major step towards using cleaner and alternative fuels in Indian Railways and reducing its dependence on diesel.

According to the Ahmedabad Railway Division, the national transporter is using an LNG-based fuel system in the train’s Driving Power Cars (DPCs) for the first time. The new dual-fuel technology allows the same engine to run on both LNG and diesel, depending on fuel availability.

Two 1,400 HP DPCs converted to LNG-Diesel system

Under the project, two Driving Power Cars, each with a capacity of 1,400 HP, have been converted to an LNG-diesel dual-fuel system.

More than 2,000 kilometres of field trials have already been completed on the two converted DPCs. The trials were carried out to check the performance and reliability of the new technology. The system can use LNG to replace up to around 40 per cent of diesel.

How will the LNG-powered train work?

The train will not depend completely on LNG. Its engine can run on both LNG and diesel, making it a dual-fuel system. Depending on fuel availability, the engine can switch between LNG and diesel. This also means that train operations can continue even if LNG is not available. Another benefit is that LNG can allow the train to cover a longer distance before refuelling.

LNG train to help reduce emissions

Indian Railways expects the use of LNG to reduce diesel consumption and emissions from the engine. The technology can help reduce pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). The initiative is therefore aimed at promoting cleaner and more environment-friendly rail transportation.

Fuel cost savings

The use of LNG can also reduce fuel costs because LNG is cheaper than diesel. Based on the trial data, Indian Railways estimates savings of around Rs 11.9 lakh per year from one DPC. For an 8-coach rake, the estimated annual saving is around Rs 23.9 lakh, it said.

Story continues below this ad

How much LNG can the train carry?

Each DPC has been fitted with an LNG tank with a capacity of around 2,200 litres. The tank can hold approximately 950–1,000 kg of usable LNG. According to the approved design, a fully loaded LNG tank in one DPC can provide enough fuel for around 444 km of daily operation. This can reduce the need for frequent refuelling.

No reduction in engine power or performance: Railways

According to Indian Railways, the LNG dual-fuel system has been designed to maintain the power, reliability and operating performance of the conventional diesel engine. The technology is intended to provide fuel savings and lower emissions without compromising the train’s performance.

“The adoption of LNG dual-fuel technology by Indian Railways is an important initiative towards clean energy, fuel efficiency, reduced operating costs and environmental protection. The technology could play an important role in developing a more sustainable and environment-friendly railway transportation system in the future,” it said.

BPCL enters advanced EV-fluid and next-generation fuel research

Maharatna BPCL and Automotive Research Association of India signed an MoU covering advanced lubricants, EV fluids, fuel additives, alternative fuels, coolants and automotive technology testing.

Green hydrogen will succeed with local demand, production, consumption: Hardeep Puri

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh PuriIndia must balance its immediate energy security with the clean energy transition, anchoring its green hydrogen ambitions around localised ecosystems rather than long-distance transit, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Thursday. Addressing a flagship Leadership Dialogue organised by the Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI) as part of its 13th Annual Forum in New Delhi, the minister detailed how strategic investments are keeping the country resilient amid global supply chain shocks.

Puri made a strong case for building decentralised clean energy networks to make alternatives viable. “I believe green hydrogen will succeed primarily where there is local demand, local production, and local consumption. It is not necessarily practical to produce green hydrogen in one location and transport it over long distances,” he said. Highlighting the nation’s rapid economic expansion, the minister pointed out that power and fuel demand continue to outpace international trends. “Energy consumption is a very strong indicator of economic activity, and India’s growth in energy consumption is approximately three times the global average, reflecting the country’s rapid economic expansion,” Puri added.

, ,  also drew attention to the uneven global impact of energy inflation, noting, “For an economy with a per capita income that is roughly five times India’s, the impact of higher energy prices can be different”. Puri reiterated India’s reliability on the trade front, adding, “Once we have made a commitment to export, it is important that we honour that commitment”.

Backing these priorities with state capital and policy support, Puri highlighted recent Cabinet decisions designed to crowd in private participation and absorb early risk. The Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister recently cleared two key schemes, including ₹80,4000 crore for Samudra Manthan. “For the first time a government has put in place a Legislative Framework where the government will finance part of the outside parties’ cost,” Puri noted.

US: 111-mile Mississippi natural gas pipeline clears federal permitting

The 111-mile Kosciusko Junction natural gas pipeline project in Mississippi has completed federal permitting, clearing a major milestone for the 36-inch pipeline and associated compressor infrastructure. (P&GJ) — The Kosciusko Junction Pipeline Project has completed federal permitting, clearing a key regulatory milestone for approximately 111 miles of new natural gas pipeline infrastructure in Mississippi.

The Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council said the project’s environmental review and permitting process was completed Sept. 21. FERC previously authorized the project on Sept. 10, allowing Gulf South Pipeline Co. and Texas Gas Transmission, both subsidiaries of Boardwalk Pipelines, to construct and operate the new facilities.

The project includes approximately 110.9 miles of new 36-inch natural gas pipeline and about 700 feet of 20-inch lateral pipeline. Plans also call for two new natural gas-fired compressor stations, modifications to existing compressor facilities and new meter stations. The pipeline will cross nine Mississippi counties.

Once operational, the project will provide approximately 1.175 million Dth/d of incremental firm natural gas transportation capacity, connecting supplies from the Midcontinent, Marcellus and Fayetteville basins with markets across the Southeast through new and existing pipeline interconnections.

Gulf South and Texas Gas previously proposed beginning construction in December 2026, subject to required approvals and clearances, with service targeted for April 28, 2028.

New Zealand Invests $20 Million in New Offshore Gas Projects

New Zealand has made further progress in restarting domestic gas production with a new round of funding targeting offshore exploration projects. Resources Minister Shane Jones and Associate Finance Minister Chris Bishop this week announced $21 million financing for two offshore gas projects. The financing will be made through the Gas Security Fund (GSF), a $113 million state-owned investment facility to ramp up gas production in New Zealand.

One of the projects considered for funding in this round is EnZed Energy’s Kaheru offshore gas exploration in Taranaki Basin. The project will receive $12.19 million for a time-limited equity arrangement. The project has a total cost of $40.2 million with EnZed Energy seeking to raise the remaining $28.1 million from other investors. Initially, the project will prospect the Kaheru field to determine whether commercially recoverable gas is present.

The Australian explorer EnZed Energy was awarded gas exploration permit by New Zealand in July. It was the first such rights to be issued by the country after reversing the 2018 ban on offshore oil and gas exploration. The 12-year exploration permit covers about 546 square kilometers in the offshore Taranaki Basin, east of the producing Kupe field.

“This project targets an estimated 182 petajoules(pj) of additional gas reserve in the Kaheru permit. That’s equivalent of nearly 25 percent of New Zealand’s January 2026 proven and probable gas reserves,” said Minister Shane Jones.

According to government petroleum data, New Zealand’s natural gas proven plus probable reserves as of 1 January 2026 was 731 pj, a decline of 23 percent from last year. The Ministry of Business noted that this was the lowest level of natural gas reserves since recording began 20 years ago. Jones added that projects such as Kaheru could be a significant new source of domestic gas supply, helping meet New Zealand’s energy needs in the coming years.

The other project to receive the funding is led by the oil services company Schlumberger New Zealand (SLB). The company was awarded $8.2 million to provide industry players with free access for two years to its proprietary seismic data, spanning New Zealand’s key exploration provinces. Over the years, SLB has assembled an extensive seismic library, comprising over 28,000 km2 of 3D data and 5,000 km2 of 2D seismic coverage across both the Taranaki and East Coast basins. As part of the funding, the government wants SLB to combine this fragmented subsurface exploration information into a single, basin-scale, AI-enabled dataset, to be delivered in industry standard format.

US: Woodway to build 22 mile gas pipeline for behind-the-meter data center project

Lotz is a journalist with over a decade of experience covering business and technology, with a focus on how innovation is shaping the African continent. His interests range from data centers and energy to finance and emerging technology. Through sharp analysis and experience across multiple fields, Lotz is keen to showcase how Africa is becoming a major contender in the digital world.

Woodway Energy Infrastructure, a developer, operator, and owner of natural gas and related energy infrastructure, has announced it has entered into definitive agreements to develop a natural gas pipeline for a hyperscale data center development.

The 22-mile, 30-inch pipeline will provide dedicated natural gas transportation to a behind-the-meter power generation project for the data center. According to a press release, the pipeline has been designed to meet the unnamed customer’s specific requirements with scalability in mind.

“This project demonstrates Woodway’s ability to rapidly deliver large-scale, purpose-built natural gas infrastructure for customers with demanding safety, reliability and capacity requirements,” said Diaco Aviki, Woodway Energy Infrastructure Chief Executive Officer. “Our model combines tailored design, speed and focused execution with long-term ownership and operation. By working closely with our customers, we can develop pipeline solutions that address their specific needs and provide the fuel supply certainty required to support their growth.”

The company said that the pipeline is expected to enter commercial service in the first half of 2028, so long as it clears the regulatory reviews and approvals. The pipeline will be owned and operated by Woodway.

Woodway has not disclosed the name of the hyperscale data center, nor was the location. However, the company’s current assets are all located in Texas, suggesting this project is likely in the state as well. Texas has also become a popular region for data center operators looking to install behind-the-meter power generation, especially around the Permian Basin.

Microsoft announced in June that it had partnered with Chevron to build a generation facility at its Project Kilby facility in West Texas. In August, w.media reported that PowerPlay was developing a 400 MW behind-the-meter AI data center project in the greater Abilene area with a neocloud partner.

Behind-the-meter generation solutions have the benefit of bypassing grid interconnection delays. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said in June that it was tracking 438 GW of large load requests for connection to the grid. Of those, nearly 89 percent are from data centers.

Bangladesh: Titas-28 Well Begins Commercial Gas Production Adding 12 to 13 MMCFD to National Grid

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit Saturday formally launched commercial gas production from the newly drilled Titas-28 well, projected to inject 12 to 13 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) into the national grid to alleviate domestic energy shortages and bolster industrial and power operations.

Special guests included Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce Chairman Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal (MP) and Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Md. Ziaul Hoque, alongside senior representatives from the ministry, Petrobangla, and Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL).

Executed by Chinese contractor CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Ltd. (CCDC) under an April 10, 2025 accord within the four evaluation-cum-development wells project across Titas and Kamta fields, drilling spanned December 15, 2025, to June 19, 2026.

Reaching a measured depth of 3,601 metres and a true vertical depth of 3,471 metres at an approximate total expenditure of BDT 200 crore inclusive of VAT and income tax, the site underwent subsequent drill stem testing (DST) and production checks before leadership inspected ongoing deep exploratory drilling at Titas-31 and Titas-29 wells.

BGFCL currently administers six fields—Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna, and Kamta—supplying roughly 30 percent of domestic output and 18 percent of total national supply.

Targeting 150 total exploratory wells, BGFCL’s active rollout features five ongoing initiatives adding 106.5 MMCFD via six new wells and eight workovers by 2030, plus a subsequent pipeline of nine new wells and 12 workovers yielding 126 MMCFD, aligning with a master blueprint targeting cumulative additions of nearly 235 MMCFD from 19 wells by 2035.

Prospect mapping spans 3D seismic coverage over 1,450 square kilometres across Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, and Meghna fields, alongside 2D/3D surveys covering 632 square kilometres northwest of Titas and northeast of Narsingdi.

Norway: Aker BP Makes New North Sea Gas Discovery

Aker BP discovered natural gas with preliminary estimates of about 5.3-84.8 million cubic feet on Norway’s side of the North Sea, some 16 miles north of the producing Duva field. Aker BP ASA discovered natural gas with preliminary estimates of 0.15-2.4 million cubic meters (5.3-84.8 million cubic feet) on Norway’s side of the North Sea, 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) north of the producing Duva field.

The estimated volumes correspond to one to 15 million barrels of oil equivalent. “The licensees will assess the well results to determine whether the discovery is economically profitable, as well as potential further delineation of the discovery”, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) said Wednesday.

The “Alpehumle” prospect, or well 36/4-2, is the first exploration well drilled in production license (PL) 1153, awarded 2021, the upstream regulator said.

“Well 36/4-2 encountered a 10-meter gas column in the Agat Formation, 10 meters of which were in sandstone layers with very good reservoir quality”, the NOD said. “The hydrocarbon/water contact was not proven”.

A sidetrack, well 36/4-2 A, “encountered four meters of sandstone of very good reservoir quality in the Agat Formation. The reservoir was aquiferous”, the NOD added.

Well 36/4-2, drilled to a vertical depth of 2,250 meters below sea level and terminated in basement rock, and well 36/4-2 A, drilled to a vertical depth of 2,320 meters below sea level and terminated in an unidentified formation, will be permanently plugged.

Drilling was performed by the semi-submersible Scarabeo 8 rig, owned by Italy’s Saipem SpA, in a site with a water depth of 255 meters, according to the NOD.

Aker BP, majority owned by Norway’s Aker ASA and Britain’s BP PLC, operates PL 1153 with a 40 percent stake. Japan’s INPEX Corp owns 30 percent, local player OKEA ASA holds 20 percent and Britain’s Harbour Energy PLC has 10 percent.

Under its “rebel revolution” strategy, Aker BP aims to “make marginal resources profitable by increasing speed and reducing costs – not just a little but significantly”.

Recently, however, it launched a partnership with Vår Energi ASA and majority state-owned Equinor ASA to explore the largest remaining reserves in Norwegian waters to sustain production as existing developments become depleted.

The partnership aims to test 20-25 exploration “opportunities” over the next four to five years, with an annual drilling target of about five “high-impact” wells, said a joint statement August 24.

“The companies have agreed to combine expertise, data, technology and exploration capacity to pursue selected high-impact exploration opportunities”, the trio said.

“In recent years, most discoveries have been made close to existing infrastructure. Developing these resources through subsea tiebacks is important for maintaining production from existing fields and facilities. Near-field exploration will remain crucial, but larger discoveries will also be needed to provide the resource base for new standalone field developments”, they said.

“The companies see continued potential for such discoveries. However, some of the largest remaining opportunities come with higher geological uncertainty, greater complexity and larger investment requirements. This has made it increasingly challenging to establish partnerships around high-impact prospects.

“By sharing risk and combining capabilities, the companies can pursue and test more of these opportunities than they would individually”.

US: Enbridge launches open season for proposed Texas natural gas pipeline

Energy company Enbridge ENB-T said on Tuesday it launched a non-binding open season for its proposed West Texas Express natural gas pipeline to transport gas west from the Waha area of the Permian Shale to markets in and around El Paso, Texas.

The Permian is the biggest oil-producing shale basin in the United States. Gas production associated with oil production in the Permian, which is located in West Texas and eastern New Mexico, also makes the basin the fastest growing and second biggest gas-producing shale basin behind the giant Marcellus and Utica shale regions in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

Most producers in the Permian are seeking oil, but as more oil and gas are produced, the U.S. Energy Information Administration has said that pressure within the reservoir declines and gas is easier to produce at lower pressures, boosting the gas-to-oil ratio.

Enbridge to buy Tallgrass crude oil business for $2.55-billion

The gas-to-oil ratio has steadily increased over the past five years to an average of nearly 4,200 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil (cf/b), a 16 per cent increase from around 3,600 cf/b in 2021, according to EIA data. More gas means more pipelines and other energy infrastructure are needed to process and transport that fuel.

Enbridge, which transports about 20 per cent of the gas consumed in the U.S., said its proposed West Texas Express project responds to growing demand for reliable gas supplies from proposed power generation, utilities, generators and industrial customers such as data centres across West Texas and markets in Mexico, New Mexico and Arizona.

West Texas Express is currently expected to include more than 150 miles of new pipeline with an initial transportation capacity of up to two billion cubic feet per day. One billion cubic feet of gas can supply around five million U.S. homes for a day.

Enbridge said it is targeting an in-service date in the fourth quarter of 2029 subject to securing sufficient commercial support and obtaining required approvals.

The non-binding open season began Sept. 10 and will close on Sept. 25.

Libya Targets 4 bcf/d Gas Production Within Five Years

Libya plans to increase its natural gas production to at least 4 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) over the next three to five years, Reuters reported citing Libyan Minister of Oil and Gas Khalifa Abdulsadek. Speaking at a forum in Bangkok, Abdulsadek said Libya has identified significant opportunities to raise gas output based solely on its discovered resources.

The targeted increase would come from both non-associated gas and associated gas resources, the minister said.

The plan forms part of Libya’s efforts to maximize its existing hydrocarbon resources and strengthen domestic gas production.

Libya produced around 903 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas in 2025, according to data from the National Oil Corporation (NOC), equivalent to approximately 2.47 bcf/d. Of this volume, around 633 bcf was consumed domestically, highlighting the pressure from rising domestic demand on gas available for exports

Turkmenistan Advances TAPI Pipeline and Infrastructure Projects in Herat

Turkmenistan has spent years seeking new gas export routes, and in western Afghanistan that effort is taking physical form. By mid-September, 122.3 kilometers of pipe had been welded and laid along the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) route in Herat Province.

Ashgabat is also pursuing two other connections with Afghanistan along the same corridor. Energy officials are discussing a 500 kV transmission line, while plans call for a railway from the Turkmen border to reach Herat and eventually extend farther south. Herat is becoming the focal point for Turkmen gas, electricity, and freight.

For Ashgabat, supplying Herat could give TAPI its first functioning Afghan market without waiting for the entire pipeline to reach Pakistan and India. Afghanistan would gain energy supplies and infrastructure, as well as a chance to connect its western region more closely to regional trade.

As of September 15, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum reported that 150.3 kilometers of the 153-kilometer TAPI route in Herat Province had been prepared for pipe installation. Of the 122.3 kilometers of pipe welded and laid, 71.5 kilometers had been buried. Hydrostatic testing had been completed on 33 kilometers. The ministry’s estimate of nearly 80% completion applies only to pipe-laying along this section.

In May, the ministry reported that 63 kilometers of pipe had been laid. Four months later, the figure had nearly doubled.

The pipeline is designed to run roughly 1,814 kilometers from Turkmenistan’s Galkynysh gas field through Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Indian border. Its planned capacity is 33 billion cubic meters a year. At full capacity, the Asian Development Bank’s current project description allocates 5% of the gas to Afghanistan and 47.5% each to Pakistan and India.

The pipeline has been under discussion for more than three decades. Conflict, financing shortages, security threats, and disputes over commercial terms have repeatedly delayed it. Work on Afghan territory resumed in September 2024. The latest figures from Herat make it possible, for the first time in years, to measure TAPI’s progress in kilometers of pipeline rather than diplomatic statements.

For Turkmenistan, the stakes are high. The country holds the world’s fourth-largest natural gas reserves, but most of its gas exports go to China. Beijing receives around 30 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually and continues to work with Ashgabat on expanding production at Galkynysh. In February, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said diversifying gas export routes was one of the country’s primary goals.

Together, Pakistan and India would provide Turkmenistan with markets comparable in scale to its Chinese market. To reach them, however, the pipeline still has to cross most of Afghanistan and then Pakistan. Tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, along with the difficult relationship between Pakistan and India, continue to create political and transit risks for the full project.

Herat offers a smaller market that could be reached sooner. A distribution network is planned in the city to supply gas to businesses, power plants, and households. In August, Turkmengaz and Afghan Gas signed a memorandum on the gasification of the province. The memorandum covers local infrastructure and future gas sales, but the timetable and commercial terms remain unclear.

Kabul is already negotiating the terms. Abdul Ghani Baradar, Afghanistan’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs, proposed a long-term contract and a more flexible pricing formula that would reduce exposure to sharp fluctuations in the European market. Afghan officials also asked Ashgabat to help build the gas distribution network in Herat.

The negotiations are moving TAPI closer to the most difficult part of any pipeline project: selling the gas. No contract has been signed, and neither volumes nor a start date have been agreed. Even so, talks over pricing and a local distribution network mean the Herat section is no longer defined solely by construction statistics.

The second project involves electricity. Turkmenistan already supplies power to Afghanistan’s northern and western provinces. A new 500 kV transmission line would increase grid capacity and electricity supplies to Herat.

On September 15, representatives of Afghanistan’s power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, and a Turkmen technical delegation discussed the line’s specifications and construction progress, as well as the Nur-ul-Jihad substation. No completion date has been announced publicly. Available reports do not confirm that the line will be extended farther to Pakistan.

The railway project has made less progress. Torghundi is already connected to Turkmenistan’s rail network. Work on the first 22-kilometer section toward Sanabar began in 2024. The full line to Herat would run for about 120 kilometers, but there are no recent public figures on how much of the route has been completed.

On September 16, Herat Governor Noor Ahmad Islamjar and Turkmen Consul General Batyr Yolov again discussed rail links, trade, and electricity supplies. The talks confirmed continued interest in the route but produced no new construction figures.

Herat cannot replace Pakistan and India as a market for Turkmen gas; local demand is far too small for a pipeline designed to carry 33 billion cubic meters a year. Even limited gas sales to Herat could give the southern route its first revenue, while electricity exports and a rail connection could generate trade and freight flows long before TAPI’s more distant sections are completed.

Bulgaria: Bulgargaz receives licence for natural gas trade in Serbia

September 25 (SeeNews) – Serbia’s energy agency has issued a licence to Bulgarian public gas supplier Bulgargaz for the wholesale supply of natural gas for a period of ten years, Bulgargaz said on Friday.

Natural gas

The new licence is part of Bulgargaz’ strategy to expand and strengthen its presence in regional markets and grow opportunities for cross-border gas trade with the countries of Central and Southeastern Europe, the company said in a statement.

Bulgargaz already has licences for the trading and supply of natural gas in Greece, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Its Moldovan subsidiary – Bulgargaz North – holds a licence to trade in natural gas in the country.

Additionally, Bulgargaz is a registered user of the gas transmission infrastructure in Greece, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary and Ukraine, which allows access to these markets and creates more opportunities for the development of cross-border trade in natural gas in the region, it said.

German energy firm SEFE boosts gas storage in bid to secure winter reserves

FRANKFURT, Sept 16 (Reuters)-German state-owned energy firm SEFE said on Wednesday it had independently increased natural gas storage levels as Europe heads into winter with the lowest inventories in years.

lHaving weaned themselves off cheap and plentiful Russian gas after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Germany and other European nations are scrambling to rebuild depleted reserves ahead of the colder months as disruptions to Middle East supplies tighten the global market and push up costs for consumers and industry.

A government source told Reuters earlier on Wednesday that economy minister Katherina Reiche would use market incentives to shore up gas storage, while avoiding the direct state purchases that have stoked prices in the past.

The government has also agreed with state-owned energy companies Uniper (UNOK DE) and SEFE that they will make fuller use of their storage capabilities, the source added.

SEFE, a gas importer that also operates around a quarter of Germany’s gas storage capacity, said it had “taken an independent commercial decision to fill the hooked storage capacity”. Uniper said that while it was in regular discussions with market participants and authorities, the

company alone would decide on how to use its storage assets, adding this would happen “solely on the basis of economic criteria”.

GAS PRICES HIGHEST SINCE DECEMBER 2022

European gas prices reached their highest in almost four years this week on faltering diplomatic efforts to open the Strait of Hormuz, through which around a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply passed helore the Iran war

Germany’s gas storage sites were around 53% full in early September, the lowest level for the time of year since records began 15 years ago, according to storage association INES, with the government maintaining that the filling of caverns should be taken care of by the market, not via political intervention.

Klaus Mueller, head of Germany’s energy regulator, told broadcaster phoenix that it was unrealistic to hit an 80% storage target set for November 1, also pointing to liquefied natural gas terminals as a source of additional volumes.

The Economy Ministry said it is ready to take targeted measures for gas supply security if the situation deteriorates.

“As a matter of principle, winter preparedness is the responsibility of the market and energy utilities must fulfil their obligations,” it said.

Uniper said its gas trading business had already stored more gas “than other market players”, adding it would meet supply obligations even under challenging market conditions such as a particularly cold winter, and it was suitably prepared.

Thailand’s PTT Seeks LNG Deals in US Gulf to Widen Supply Base

Thailand’s state-controlled energy company PTT Pel is in talks to buy more liquefied natural gas from regions including the US Gulf Coast as a means to diversify supplies and expand its trading business over the next few years. PTT would also be open to taking minority stakes in LNG export projects if that would secure the company more favorable contract terms, Chief Executive Officer Kongkrapan Intarajang said in an interview on the sidelines of the Gastech conference in Bangkok.

“We might have to invest a little bit to secure the molecules,” he said on Tuesday.

Across Asia, energy companies are grappling with sky-high LNG prices as the ongoing war in the Middle East disrupts flows of the super-chilled fuel through the Strait of Hormuz, which used to handle a fifth of global supplies. Buyers are now seeking to reduce risk by securing contracts with exporters outside the Persian Gulf.

“I don’t think it’s possible to not buy 1.NG from the Middle East,” Kongkrapan said. “But you have to now learn to diversify. You have to have a lot outside of Ilormuz, and also more flexible terms,” he said, adding that the company was seeking a mixture of long-term and spot cargoes.

PTT was also open to sourcing fuel from Australia, Canada and the Middle East – as long as it’s competitive, he said.

The search for new supplies is part of the Thai company’s plan for a roughly fivefold increase in I.NG trading volumes by 2035, when it plans to handle around 15 million tons a year, Kongkrapan said. More than half of that supply would be sourced through long-term contracts, he said, from deals to be signed over the next few years.

The goal would he to have the option of bringing the ING into Thailand or reselling it to other Asian importers if domestic demand slumps, he said.

PTT also plans to invest in growing its domestic gas production in the Gulf of Thailand. Development of its own resources, which are cheaper than imported LNG, has always been the company’s top priority, Kongkrapan said. “But at the same time, we know that we need to continue to import more LING,” he added. “In terms of import facilities, we have to anticipate the volume and invest properly.”

US Senate amendment mandates 100% secondary tariffs on top five Russian oil importers, including India

Washington DC: In a significant legislative move to curb funding for Moscow’s military operations in Ukraine, a newly introduced Senate amendment to the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026”, which was passed in August, mandates secondary tariffs of up to 100 per cent on goods imported from the top five largest buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, directly exposing major importers like India and China to massive trade levies.

The underlying legislation was passed by the US Senate on August 7, by an 86-11 vote to increase economic pressure on Russia and Iran.

The House Committee on Rules, amongst the oldest standing committees in the House, is currently processing the introduced Senate amendments.

The bill passed by the US Senate does not explicitly name Russia’s trading partners, but specifically targets the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas by volume.

Section 113 of the statutory text of the amendment document outlines mandatory ad valorem trade duties.

“Not later than 30 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the President shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, increase the rate of duty for all goods imported into the United States from a country described in subsection (c) (and only from a country described in subsection (c)) to a rate of up to 100 percent ad valorem,” the section read.

According to Section 113(c), a covered country is any foreign nation that “knowingly made new purchases of crude oil or natural gas that originated in the Russian Federation on a date that is on or after 30 days after the date of enactment of this Act; and was among the 5 largest importers, by total volume, of crude oil or natural gas that originated in the Russian Federation during the most recent 12-month period preceding the date of the enactment of this Act; or was among the top 5 countries facilitating Russian oil sanctions evasion during the most recent 12-month period preceding the date of the enactment of this Act.”

As India remains among the largest buyers of Russian seaborne crude alongside China, it falls directly under this top five volume trigger.

Section 113(f) emphasises that any duty imposed under this section “shall be in addition to any other duty, fee, tax, exaction, or charge applicable with respect to the good.”

The Amendment also states that the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is granted statutory authority under Section 113(b) to adjust duty rates between zero and 100 per cent if a country takes “significant steps to increase” or “to decrease or cease engaging in the importation, sale, supply, transfer, or purchase of such crude oil or natural gas.”

Section 113(d) outlines a specific exception for natural gas, noting that duties will not apply if a country’s natural gas imports from Russia were “less than 15 percent of the total annual exports of natural gas from the Russian Federation during that period” and the country has taken significant steps to reduce those imports.

However, no such exception is provided for major crude oil buyers.

Additionally, Section 115(a) provides executive authority for a waiver, stating that the US President may waive the “application of any sanctions provision with respect to a foreign person, any restriction with respect to a person, or any duty under this title.” To grant a waiver, the President must submit a written certification to the US Congress confirming that the action is in the national interest of the United States.
Beyond tariffs on energy buyers, the Act institutes comprehensive measures against Russian leadership, financial institutions, and maritime networks.

The bill imposes blocking sanctions and visa revocations on top leadership—including the President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and military commanders of the Russian Federation—as well as foreign entities supplying items like CNC tools, lubricant additives, chemical coatings, advanced sensors, and fibre optic cables to Russia’s defence industrial base. Furthermore, it targets Russia’s “shadow fleet” by blocking foreign vessels and sanctioning foreign persons that transport Russian energy without adequate maritime insurance or evade price caps established by the Price Cap Coalition.

It also mandates severe financial prohibitions, blocking all property and restricting correspondent accounts for the Central Bank of Russia, Sberbank, VTB Bank, and Gazprombank, while penalising foreign financial institutions that engage in significant transactions with them.

Tanzania may introduce new LNG law by year-end, minister says

BANGKOK, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Tanzania may complete a new law that governs liquefied natural gas investments by the end of the year, deputy minister for energy Salome Wycliffe Makamba told reporters on the sidelines of the Gastech conference in Bangkok on Tuesday. The new law could pave the way for a final investment decision on a long-stalled $42 billion project that would tap Tanzania’s massive gas resources and provide an alternative source of supply for Asia.

Canada sees scope for France LNG partnership, minister says

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 21 (Reuters) – Canada could pursue an energy partnership with France involving liquefied natural gas from its Pacific coast, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said on Monday, a day after leaders of the two countries met and discussed energy cooperation.

Anand said it was “quite conceivable” ‌for Canada to execute an energy partnership with a European country using LNG exported from Canada’s west coast.

“That goes for France,” she said in an interview on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.

French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly called in recent days for deeper energy cooperation with Canada as Europe seeks to diversify supplies amid disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East and rising energy prices.

Canada, the world’s fifth-largest natural gas producer, shipped its first-ever liquefied natural gas export cargo in June from the recently constructed LNG Canada facility in British Columbia, which is led by Shell (SHEL.L), opens new tab and is the first North American LNG export site with direct access to the Pacific Ocean.

Anand said discussions on energy partnerships were taking place with countries around the world across a range of sectors including LNG, clean energy, wind, solar and nuclear power.

“Every country I speak with asks about potential partnerships in energy,” she said.

Anand pointed to discussions earlier ‌this year between Canada and Germany involving LNG supplies destined for Asia through a swap arrangement, under which Germany benefits from third-party sales rather than direct shipments.

“There is a host of potential deals and relationships that we can execute on energy,” she said, adding that Canada was looking to match its energy expertise with the needs of partner countries.

German state-controlled energy group Uniper (UN0k.DE), opens new tab at the end of July also finalised a 20-year liquefied natural gas purchase deal with Canada.

Asked about prospects for cooperation with France, Anand said the same logic applied.

Anand said energy would be among the topics discussed when she hosts Germany’s foreign minister in Canada later this week, alongside critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

She said Ottawa was seeking to deepen ties not only with the European Union as a bloc but also with individual member states.

“What Canada is doing is deepening its relationship not simply with the EU as a whole, but with individual countries within the EU to ensure that our domestic population benefits,” she said.

Greece: Petronas and Metlen lock in five-year LNG supply line for Greece

Greece’s push to deepen its role in Europe’s gas network has received a fresh lift with a new supply pact linking a Southeast European buyer to one of Asia’s largest LNG portfolios. The deal, reported by Indian Chemical News, adds another layer to the region’s effort to secure flexible fuel imports as energy markets remain unsettled.

A new supply route for the Greek market. METLEN has signed a long-term sale and purchase agreement with PETRONAS through PETCO Trading (UK) Limited for liquefied natural gas deliveries into Greece. Under the arrangement, PTUK will supply six LNG cargoes a year from PETRONAS’ Atlantic portfolio, equal to about 0.6 billion cubic metres annually over five years starting in 2027.

The agreement is designed to widen METLEN’s sourcing options and improve the resilience of its gas procurement. It also adds to Greece’s ambitions to act as an energy gateway for Southeast Europe, where governments and utilities continue to weigh supply security against affordability and the gradual energy transition.

Why the deal matters beyond the two companies. For Greece and neighbouring markets, the importance of the contract lies not only in the volume but in the flexibility of supply. LNG cargoes can be redirected and traded more easily than pipeline gas, making them a valuable tool for balancing seasonal demand and navigating disruptions in global energy flows. That matters in Southeast Europe, where gas infrastructure has expanded in recent years but dependence on imported molecules remains high. Additional LNG-linked arrangements can support market liquidity, reduce concentration risk and strengthen the region’s access to diversified supply sources.

METLEN said the transaction fits into its broader energy strategy, which includes integrated operations across the gas value chain. The company has positioned itself as a participant in Europe’s changing energy map, where trading, logistics and supply flexibility are increasingly as important as production capacity.

What PETRONAS is aiming to achieve

For PETRONAS, the contract reinforces a commercial push to extend its LNG footprint in Europe and the Mediterranean. Through PTUK, the Malaysian energy group is seeking to expand in West of Suez markets while leaning on its global LNG portfolio and trading capabilities to retain and build customer relationships.

The company framed the agreement as part of a wider commitment to offer reliable and adaptable LNG solutions. That stance reflects the broader challenge facing suppliers: customers are not only looking for molecules, but also for delivery certainty, portfolio depth and the ability to respond to shifting demand patterns.

In practical terms, the five-year supply window gives both sides a clearer planning horizon. For a buyer, that can mean better visibility on procurement. For a seller, it secures a long-term outlet for cargoes from a diversified portfolio that can be deployed into multiple markets.

Regional energy security remains the bigger story

The deal lands at a time when governments across Europe are still recalibrating gas strategies after repeated supply shocks in recent years. Even as the continent accelerates its clean energy build-out, gas continues to play a bridging role in power generation, industry and heating, especially in markets that are still building out alternatives.

In that context, contracts such as this one are more than routine trade. They are part of a wider effort to keep supply chains resilient, diversify import dependence and preserve optionality for buyers exposed to volatile global pricing and geopolitical risk.

METLEN’s leadership said the agreement will help diversify LNG sourcing and support Greece’s credentials as a regional energy hub. PETRONAS, meanwhile, said the partnership strengthens its ability to deliver flexible LNG solutions while supporting energy resilience in Greece and across Southeast Europe.

The commercial logic is straightforward: sellers want stable demand, buyers want secure supply, and both want optionality in a market that is still adjusting to structural change. The strategic value, however, may be larger than the cargo count suggests. As Southeast Europe seeks to build a more connected and reliable gas market, deals like this can help shape the region’s next phase of energy integration.

What comes next

The first cargoes under the agreement are scheduled to arrive in 2027, giving both sides time to align logistics, trading plans and downstream demand. If executed smoothly, the contract could become a template for further LNG partnerships in the region, particularly as buyers look for long-term supply certainty without sacrificing flexibility.

For now, the pact underscores a simple but important reality: in Europe’s evolving energy market, security is increasingly being built through commercial partnerships as much as through pipelines and terminals.

US: MET Group and Shell sign new agreement for US LNG supply

MET International, the trading and wholesale arm of Swiss-based integrated energy company, MET Group, and Shell have entered into a new long-term LNG purchase agreement, marking another significant milestone in their long-standing co-operation in LNG and gas trading. The agreement further supports MET Group’s ambition to supply its European customers with LNG sourced from the US, strengthening security of supply and portfolio diversification.

Under the new agreement, Shell will supply MET with LNG from its US portfolio over a multi-year period, further strengthening MET Group’s access to flexible US LNG supply.

The transaction represents the latest step in the growing strategic relationship between the two companies. In July 2024, MET and Shell signed a 10-year free-on-board LNG purchase agreement, securing long-term access to US LNG and strengthening MET’s supply diversification strategy. In February 2026, the companies further deepened their co-operation through a memorandum of understanding signed in Washington D.C. to explore additional LNG supply and trading opportunities aimed at enhancing Europe’s energy security, one outcome of which is the present SPA that the parties have signed.

As demand grows for more diversified gas procurement strategies, access to US LNG is becoming increasingly important for MET Group and its customers. LNG supplies linked to the US market can help broaden sourcing options while reducing exposure to volatility in European gas benchmarks, including through innovative pricing solutions offered by MET, such as contracts indexed to the US Henry Hub benchmark.

Huibert Vigeveno, CEO of MET Group said: “Customers are at the centre of everything we do, and reliable access to US LNG strengthens our ability to provide greater flexibility and value across European energy markets. This customer-backed approach is what makes MET a pan-European energy champion, enabling us to deliver the best possible service across Europe as well as further contribute to supply security for the continent.”

“Over the last decade, LNG has become a cornerstone of the global energy system, delivering secure energy supply for people around the world,” added Tom Summers, Executive Vice President of LNG Marketing and Trading, Shell. “We are pleased to extend our relationship with MET Group to help meet the needs of its customers.”

US: Commonwealth LNG Plans Expansion That Will Nearly Double Export Capacity

The developer of Commonwealth LNG, a natural gas export terminal under construction in Louisiana, announced plans to expand the project with a second phase to nearly double its capacity as buyers in Asia push for more US fuel. The initiative, backed by Kimmeridge Energy Management Co, and Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, will add five production units to the facility, according to a statement. The project’s developer is making the announcement along with Trump administration officials Tuesday during the Group of 20 energy summit in Houston.

The Trump administration, which revoked a Biden-era moratorium on new US licenses to export liquefied natural gas on its first day in office, has since approved over 150 million tons of addition export capacity, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.

“That’s the government giving permission and getting out of the way,” Wright said in remarks announcing the expansion in llouston.

Commonwealth’s expansion plans come as the war in Iran continues to disrupt about one-fifth of global LNG supplies. The conflict has eflectively closed the Strait of Hormuz for shipments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and global buyers are increasingly looking to the US to diversify their supplies. The US is the world’s largest exporter of the fuel and aims to double total export capacity with new LNG plants under construction and expansions at multiple facilities.

Commonwealth’s developer, Caturus, plans for the terminal’s initial. $13 billion phase to have the capacity to produce 9.5 million tons of I.NG annually. The expansion phase would increase the Cameron Parish, Louisiana, facility to 17.3 million tons a year, growing by 7.8 million tons annually in capacity with the additional production units, according to the statement.

The initial phase is expected to start by 2030. Pending permitting approvals and financing, the second phase would follow in the early 2030s, the company said.

Nigeria: TotalEnergies to Develop Offshore Gas Field to Boost Nigeria LNG Supply

TotalEnergies has decided to invest in the development of the Ima gas field offshore Nigeria to increase supply for the expanding Nigeria LNG export plant, the French supermajor said on Wednesday.

As operator and holder of a 40% interest in the Ima gas field, TotalEnergies and its local partner AMNI, owning the remaining 60%, have taken the final investment decision (FID) for the development of the field straddling the OML 112 and 117 offshore licenses in Nigeria.

The Ima gas field, which lies in shallow waters close to Bonny Island, will be developed with a single platform, connected through a 22-km pipeline to the Nigeria LNG plant, in which TotalEnergies holds a 15% stake.

Production start-up is expected in 2028, with a plateau of 350 million cubic feet per day, or more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).

When the Ima field comes on stream, it will supply about one-third of the gas required for the ongoing Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion project, which will increase the liquefaction plant capacity from 22 million tons per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa, TotalEnergies said.

The Ima gas project is a low-cost and low-emissions development, with a simplified platform design, electric power supply from shore, no flaring, and permanent methane detection and monitoring, according to the supermajor.

“This new project will contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria,” said Nicolas Terraz, President, Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies.

In the wake of the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz disruption, integrated and upstream companies are increasingly looking to develop gas resources and LNG export capabilities in regions not depending on the chokepoints in the Middle East.

U.S. supermajor Chevron, for example, is looking to expand its natural gas business with opportunities in Argentina, the Mediterranean, Africa, and Australia, as it aims to offer diversified LNG supply to its customers.

“What we’re seeing from this crisis is that it just reinforces the need for diversity — diversity of supply and diversity of different contracting structures,” Freeman Shaheen, President of Global Gas at Chevron, told Reuters last week.

Mexico explores LNG ties with Indonesia as Pacific export projects target Asia

Mexico’s energy minister Luz Elena González Escobar has discussed natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the Indonesian ambassador, as the conflict in the Middle East disrupts global energy supplies. While the energy ministry provided no further details about the meeting, Mexico is developing a series of LNG export projects on its Pacific coast that aim to serve Asian markets.

“We discussed possible collaboration on natural gas and LNG projects,” González Escobar said.

The first of those projects, Sempra’s Energía Costa Azul in Baja California, is expected to begin commercial operations by the end of 2026.

For its part, Indonesia’s state oil company Pertamina said in mid-September that, to maintain energy security, it wants to diversify its sources of LNG and keep a flexible portfolio.

Pertamina already buys North American LNG through a deal with Cheniere‘s plant in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Indonesia is accelerating efforts to switch household cooking from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to compressed natural gas (CNG). That could also increase the country’s need for LNG imports.

FortisBC Gets BC Environmental Clearance for Tilbury LNG Expansion

British Columbia’s provincial government has granted an environmental assessment certificate to FortisBC for another expansion at its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Tilbury Island. The decision allows the power and gas utility to proceed to a final investment decision and pursue final approvals, the provincial government said in an online statement.

The expansion involves constructing a storage tank with a capacity of 142,400 cubic meters (over five million cubic feet), a liquefaction unit that can produce up to 2.5 million metric tons of LNG per year and a natural gas receiving facility.

“The Tilbury Phase 2 LNG expansion has been prioritized by the province as part of BC’s Look West strategy for jobs and prosperity”, the provincial government said, referring to a 10-year economic plan to reduce reliance on the United States.

FortisBC expects to spend CAD 3.1 billion (around $2.2 billion) to deliver the project in six years.

Earlier this year the provincial government issued an Order in Council exempting the Phase 1B expansion from a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity.

With a projected investment of over CAD 2 billion, the earlier expansion project “helps meet rising demand for LNG fueling service at the Port of Vancouver and improves access to LNG fueling for vessels travelling along the western coast of North America and across the Pacific”, FortisBC said July 24.

“Our Tilbury facility is already producing LNG for BC Ferries and Seaspan Ferries. With this expansion, we will be able to produce more lower-carbon LNG to fuel the modern generation of ships visiting our coast”, said FortisBC president and chief executive Roger Dall’Antonia.

“The project helps position the Port of Vancouver as a leading LNG marine fueling hub, supports the transition to lower-emission marine fuels, strengthens BC’s role in a growing global market and will deliver long-term economic benefits for communities throughout the province”, FortisBC said.

Phase 1B still needs to clear other regulatory approvals before construction could begin. “Facility construction could start as early as mid-2027 and be in service as early as 2031”, FortisBC said.

The exemption by the provincial government is part of regulatory amendments that “establish a framework to support the expansion and enable Musqueam Indian Band to acquire interests in the project through a partnership with FortisBC”, the company said.

In 2022 FortisBC and the Musqueam Indian Band signed an agreement that provides for the latter’s acquisition of ownership in the Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion Project and the Tilbury Marine Jetty Project.

In 2023 FortisBC announced an agreement with the Snuneymuxw First Nation that “will result in the parties working in close collaboration on and sharing benefits associated with the Tilbury LNG Projects”.

Tilbury LNG’s first expansion project began service 2019. “As part of the expansion, we’ve added a new storage tank and additional LNG production equipment to meet the growing demand for LNG within the transportation sector and industry in BC”, FortisBC said May 22, 2019. “The Tilbury expansion is also supplying export shipments to China to help small-scale industrial customers switch to cleaner burning LNG from coal”.

Trump Backs Argentina LNG Project

The US Export-Import Bank is offering to lend up to $6 billion of financing for Argentina’s signature natural gas project, another boost of support by the Trump administration as President Javier Milei seeks foreign investment. Argentina LNG, which would be the biggest infrastructure project in the country’s history, received an offer from the US government’s credit agency, according to a statement Wednesday by state-run energy firm YPF SA, which is leading the project. Italy’s Eni SpA and Abu Dhabi’s Adnoc are also invested in the project to monetize Argentina’s vast shale gas resources in Patagonia.

The three companies are rushing to get banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Santander to lend a big chunk of the $24 billion they need to build infrastructure, including processing plants, pipelines and floating liquefaction units. That’s a tall task in Argentina, where financing for energy projects in the Milei era has revived, but for much smaller sums.

YPF Chief Executive Officer Horacio Marin told Bloomberg News last week that the partners would make a final investment decision in November — but probably only with letters of intent from banks and export credit agencies to complete lending arrangements.

Interest in Argentina LNG has been growing as buyers in Europe and Asia look to diversify away from the Middle East amid the war in Iran. This project would produce 12 million tons a year of liquefied natural gas on purpose-built vessels, which could make it the biggest offshore liquefaction plant in the world and alter the global map of suppliers.

Under Milei, Argentina is developing a major shale exports hub on the Atlantic coast, including another smaller LNG facility and an oil port, both set to start operations next year. Argentina LNG is projected to debut in 2030 should construction move forward.

The ExIm Bank’s offer comes a year after President Donald Trump’s administration provided Milei’s government with a $20 billion currency swap line to mitigate a currency selloff ahead of midterm elections. The US and Argentina also signed a trade agreement last February.

Qatar Ramps Up LNG Shipping via Hormuz

Qatar has ramped up liquefied natural gas tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to the highest in more than two months, a sign it’s becoming more comfortable moving ships through the waterway. At least two laden carriers have been sent outbound through the narrow strait in the last week, while at least two moved in the opposite direction to enter the Persian Gulf, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. One of the shipments is on its way to India’s west coast.

No signals were detected from the four vessels when they traversed Hormuz, but jamming and interference is common in the area, complicating efforts to ascertain the exact location of ships.

State-owned QatarEnergy didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The movements mark the most sustained increase in Qatari LNG tanker activity since early July, when the country largely halted exports through the strait after one of its vessels was attacked. Before the war, Hormuz handled about a fifth of global LNG supply, but transits have become perilous due to numerous strikes on ships.

Traffic remains far below pre-war levels of roughly three LNG shipments a day, but any increase could help ease a global gas supply crunch. Prices in Europe and Asia have surged to the highest levels since 2022 over the last few weeks as demand builds in the run-up to winter.

Qatar may also be following the strategies of Persian Gulf oil producers, who have been sending significant volumes of crude through Hormuz. They have embraced a tactic known as shuttling, where they send cargoes through the waterway often on their own ships, before loading the shipments to other vessels in the Gulf of Oman. That’s more challenging for LNG, however, due to the technical difficulties of transferring the super-chilled fuel.

The country has been loading LNG onto available empty tankers inside the gulf, and has also exported some fuel to Kuwait, to manage storage and keep parts of its massive export complex running at minimum levels. Maintaining some output allows QatarEnergy to keep equipment operational and gives it the flexibility to quickly increase output.

Qatar’s Ras Laffan plant – the largest LNG export facility in the world – can resume operations at undamaged parts of the facility “within a couple of weeks” when Hormuz reopens, Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York on Sunday.

Technological Development for Cleaner and Greener Environment Hydrogen & Bio-Methane

A national project: What green hydrogen is and why Spain is backing it

Spain hopes to become Europe’s green hydrogen leader, backed by its renewable resources. What is it, what is it for and what hurdles lie ahead?

For decades, Spain has relied on oil and gas from abroad. What was once an energy disadvantage could now turn into an opportunity. Sun, wind and plenty of room to generate renewable electricity on a large scale put Spain in a privileged position for a still nascent industry: green hydrogen.

“Spain has always had the disadvantage of not having oil or gas,” Maarten Wetselaar, Moeve’s chief executive, tells “Euronews”. “But now it is Spain’s moment because it has abundant solar power, very good wind resources and space to build large renewable parks.”

The former Cepsa wants to make the most of that combination. The company has just begun in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, construction of Onuba, the first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley: more than 1 billion euros of investment in a project that will start with 300 megawatts (MW) of electrolysis capacity.

The plan goes far beyond a single plant. Spain wants to use its renewable resources to build a new industry, cut its energy dependence and, in the longer term, become an energy supplier to other European countries.

But what exactly is green hydrogen? Why does Spain believe it can produce it competitively? And what obstacles still have to be overcome before that ambition becomes reality?

What is green hydrogen?

Although it is often described as one of the energies of the future, hydrogen is not a primary energy source like the sun or the wind. It is an energy carrier: energy has to be used to produce it.

Hydrogen has been used for decades in refineries, in the chemical industry and to make products such as fertilisers. The problem is that most of it is still obtained from fossil fuels. So-called grey hydrogen is mainly produced using natural gas, a process that generates CO2 emissions.

Green hydrogen changes how it is produced. Through a process known as electrolysis, an electric current splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. If the electricity used comes from renewable sources such as solar or wind, we refer to renewable, or green, hydrogen.

And that is where Spain’s first advantage comes in. Producing it requires vast amounts of electricity. According to Wetselaar, power accounts for roughly 70% of the cost of green hydrogen. “If you go to the place in Europe where (renewable electricity) is cheapest, which is the Iberian Peninsula, then your green hydrogen will be very, very competitive,” the Moeve CEO says.

“Spain is a huge source of renewable energy and therefore can be and will be Europe’s leading producer of green hydrogen,” he adds. It is an ambitious forecast by the company, and there are still major hurdles before it can come true. But it helps explain why businesses and public authorities are channelling multi-billion-euro investments into this technology.

If we have renewable electricity, why do we need hydrogen?

This is one of the fundamental questions. Whenever it is possible to use renewable electricity directly, doing so is usually more efficient than using that electricity to make hydrogen and then using the hydrogen as an energy source. The aim is therefore not to replace fossil fuels with hydrogen across the board.

Its main potential lies in sectors that are hard to electrify directly. Certain processes in heavy industry, chemical production and parts of maritime and air transport need alternatives to fossil fuels that batteries cannot always provide in a practical way.

Driving the electric car revolution with safe and secure batteries

Comparatively lightweight and long lasting with good performance, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have proven invaluable in EV development, but they carry with them potential safety hazards which must be managed. Also, while consumers are familiar with the traditional combustion engine, and therefore accept the well-known risks associated with fossil fuel-powered cars, there is still an element of distrust relating to relatively new and unfamiliar EV technologies.

Improvements in design, materials, construction and manufacturing processes mean that the safety of Li-ion has dramatically improved. However, ensuring their safety and reliability requires thorough and accurate testing, which includes:

  • Lifecycle testing – verifies how long a battery lasts and demonstrates the quality of the battery. These tests include environmental cycle testing and calendar life testing.
  • Performance testing – demonstrates the efficiency of batteries, such as performance testing under various climatic conditions.
  • Environmental and durability testing – demonstrates the quality and reliability of a battery through tests including vibration, shock, EMC, thermal cycling, corrosion, dust, salt and humidity.
  • Abuse testing – simulates extreme environmental conditions and scenarios to test batteries beyond limits.
  • Dynamic impact tests – simulates a real vehicle accident to determine the true safety performance of the battery when the car body is deformed.
  • Transportation tests – UN 38.3 is a series of tests to verify the robustness of batteries against conditions encountered in shipment.

Three degrees
Single battery cells typically come in three package styles – cylindrical, prismatic and pouch – and can be particularly sensitive to mishandling, inappropriate packaging, deformation and contamination. They can also fail due to overcharging and extreme temperatures. Repeated overcharging of a battery cell can create unwanted electrical paths, as well as short circuits that grow and create instability. High temperatures can drive excessive ionic flow which damages the crystalline structure of the cathode and can ignite electrolyte. Meanwhile, charging at low temperatures can lead to metallic plating, creating instability through short circuits.

When these individual cells are connected in series/parallel combinations (depending on end-use requirements) the resulting modules deliver increased voltage and capacity. Although the individual cells are now mechanically ‘protected’ with a mechanical support/enclosure, care must be taken due to the potentially high voltages and high currents presented.

For EVs, large battery packs connect to the vehicle’s electric powertrain. These packs are constructed by connecting modules together, adding sensors and a battery management system (BMS). They deliver an extremely high voltage and can be molded to fit the host vehicle and may also form part of its structure.

Safety tips for module and pack designs include:

  • Use physical partitions and fire breaks to minimize fire propagation.
  • Employ good thermal management.
  • Use pressure vents/relief mechanisms to safely deal with excessive pressures.
  • Utilize sensors and BMS to identify abnormal behaviors.
  • Use materials appropriate for foreseeable temperatures.
  • Use constructions with adequate mechanical strength appropriate for the real world.

Hardware and software
The BMS consists of both hardware and software elements, which contribute to vehicle safety and performance. The hardware generally includes current sensing capabilities for state-of-charge (SoC) estimation and for safety. It must also detect leakage current faults, which could render the vehicle chassis ‘live’ and therefore highly dangerous, if not lethal. Effective fusing will also provide overcurrent protection. A pre-charge element should be incorporated to energize circuits via current limiting components to minimize inrush currents. Relays and contactors will also provide safe and reliable connection/disconnection to and from the vehicle.

The software element of the BMS provides the interface and communications to the vehicle (CANbus). The incorporation of diagnostics and health software monitors SoC (under/over charge), which is important for control, safety and vehicle range estimation. State-of-health functions will also determine battery degradation over time and predict end of usable life. The software delivers control over the battery’s function, including electrical isolation, thermal management, charge/discharge and cell balancing.

5G will also be a driver of smart battery maintenance, using data over-the-air and software-over-the-air. This means that real-time data can be used to optimize battery charging and discharging, and support predictive maintenance and failures, as well as remote troubleshooting. On-the-fly software updates will deal with battery aging and extreme operating conditions, such as hot or cold environments.

Hazard awareness
Because of the energy requirements to power EVs, high-voltage/high-capacity battery packs are needed. Depending on the configuration, battery modules can be high voltage (>50V DC), therefore presenting an electric shock and energy hazard, and vehicle battery packs will certainly present both. It is therefore essential that people working with high-voltage systems are aware of the potential dangers and protective measures. Battery safety and testing must also be a key consideration and EV battery specifications and compliance is becoming ever more critical.
