CNG Consumption In Patna Rises 19-Fold In Six Years; Daily Demand Reaches 1.40 Lakh Kg

Patna: CNG consumption in Patna has increased nearly 19-fold in six years, with daily demand now reaching about 1.40 lakh kg, as the city’s network of CNG stations continues to expand. GAIL India began supplying CNG in Patna around seven years ago with three stations. The number of operational stations in Patna and adjoining areas had risen to 30 by February 2025 and has since increased to 41. GAIL General Manager AK Sinha said the company supplied 19 lakh kg of CNG in the 2019-20 financial year. Supply increased to 47 lakh kg in 2020-21, 1.27 crore kg in 2021-22, 2.52 crore kg in 2022-23 and 3.14 crore kg in 2023-24.

The supply was projected to reach 3.60 crore kg in 2024-25, according to the figures provided by GAIL.

Daily Demand Continues To Rise

Patna’s daily CNG consumption has also increased steadily. Demand was around 70,000 kg per day in 2024 and rose to about 90,000 kg in 2025.

It has now reached approximately 1.40 lakh kg per day, prompting efforts to strengthen supply infrastructure and expand the network of CNG stations across Patna and nearby areas.

Supply Issues In Rural Areas

Despite the expansion, supply constraints continue to affect some areas outside the main urban centres.

Residents and vehicle operators in areas such as Bihta have reported seeing “No CNG” signs at stations for several hours or even days. Drivers sometimes have to travel to other stations in search of fuel.

The Naubatpur Mother Station has long served as a key supply hub for CNG and PNG in Patna and surrounding areas. A Mother CNG station has also been developed at Gardanibagh.

Efforts are under way to improve CNG supply in Gardanibagh, Chitkohra, Anisabad, Beur and adjoining areas.

More Than 60,000 CNG Vehicles

More than 60,000 CNG-powered vehicles are currently operating in Patna, including over 40,000 auto-rickshaws and around 20,000 private cars, besides buses and other vehicles.

CNG has gained wider adoption among auto-rickshaw operators, taxi owners and private vehicle users because of its comparatively lower cost than petrol and diesel and its role in reducing vehicular emissions.

The growing dependence on CNG was evident during a supply disruption in May 2025, when long queues formed at several stations across Patna.

With consumption continuing to rise, the expansion and reliability of the CNG supply network will remain important for meeting the city’s growing demand for gas-based transport.

Odisha Crosses 1.9 Lakh Domestic PNG Connections; Khordha Leads Statewide Rollout

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 4: Odisha has crossed a significant milestone in the expansion of its City Gas Distribution (CGD) network, with more than 1.90 lakh households now connected to Piped Natural Gas (PNG), Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Responding to a question from BJD MP Sasmit Patra, the Minister said the state has made steady progress in expanding clean fuel infrastructure through projects being implemented by entities authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).

According to the ministry, all 30 districts of Odisha are covered under 12 Geographical Areas (GAs) approved by PNGRB for the development of City Gas Distribution infrastructure. As of May 31, 2026, the state has recorded 1,90,551 domestic PNG connections, 159 operational CNG stations, and a pipeline network spanning 9,040 inch-kilometres.

The current progress forms part of the long-term targets set under the Minimum Work Programme (MWP), which aims to provide 9,09,582 PNG household connections, establish 247 CNG stations, and lay 14,320 inch-km of gas pipelines across Odisha by June 2033.

Khordha has emerged as the state’s frontrunner in PNG adoption, with 76,911 households connected to the network, followed by Cuttack with 37,996 connections. Other districts registering notable progress include Sundargarh (15,825), Bargarh (11,292), Jagatsinghpur (11,236), Sambalpur (8,867), Puri (8,163) and Dhenkanal (7,885).

The expansion has also reached Jharsuguda (5,235 connections), Jajpur (2,220) and Angul (1,166), while districts such as Ganjam and Balangir are in the early stages of network development with 257 and 38 domestic PNG connections, respectively. Several other districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Subarnapur, Kalahandi, Nuapada and Rayagada, are witnessing phased rollout of the CGD network.

The minister highlighted the rapid growth of Odisha’s gas infrastructure over the past four years. Domestic PNG connections have nearly tripled from 60,596 in March 2022 to over 1.90 lakh, while the number of CNG stations has increased from 34 to 159. During the same period, the gas pipeline network expanded from 2,990 inch-km to 9,040 inch-km, significantly improving access to cleaner fuel.

Among the major infrastructure hubs, Khordha has 24 operational CNG stations supported by 1,734 inch-km of gas pipelines, while Cuttack has 14 CNG stations and 945 inch-km of pipeline infrastructure.

The CGD expansion in Odisha is being undertaken by authorised companies, including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), GAIL Gas Limited, Adani Total Gas Limited, GAIL (India) Limited, and Megha City Gas Distribution Private Limited.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the rollout is progressing in accordance with PNGRB-approved project plans and timelines, with the objective of expanding access to cleaner, affordable and environmentally sustainable fuel across urban and rural Odisha.

Piped gas demand rises as India’s LPG sales fall; petrol, diesel consumption jumps in July

India’s demand for piped natural gas (PNG) continued to strengthen in July as more commercial and industrial consumers shifted away from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), contributing to a sharp decline in LPG sales. At the same time, petrol and diesel consumption at the country’s three state-owned fuel retailers recorded strong year-on-year growth, driven by delayed monsoon rains that boosted irrigation demand and sustained road transport activity.

Combined petrol sales by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) rose 9.7 per cent to 3.45 million tonnes in July, compared with 3.14 million tonnes in the same month last year.

The July petrol volume was also 15.1 per cent higher than the 2.99 million tonnes sold in July 2024 and 36.1 per cent above the level recorded in July 2023. However, on a sequential basis, petrol consumption slipped 1.1 per cent from 3.48 million tonnes in June.

Diesel sales, widely regarded as a key indicator of economic activity, climbed 10.7 per cent year-on-year to 7.12 million tonnes from 6.43 million tonnes in July last year.

As the country’s most-consumed fuel, diesel is extensively used in freight transportation, agricultural machinery and irrigation pumps. The delayed arrival of the monsoon led farmers to rely more heavily on diesel-powered pumps during the peak sowing season, boosting fuel demand.

Diesel consumption in July was 11.5 per cent higher than the corresponding month of 2024 and 12.7 per cent above the level recorded in July 2023. Compared with June, however, sales declined 9.2 per cent from 7.85 million tonnes.

Fuel demand typically softens during the monsoon season as rainfall reduces the need for irrigation and limits road travel. This year, however, the late onset of rains resulted in increased diesel consumption for agricultural activities. The month-on-month decline was largely attributed to seasonal factors, as June generally sees stronger fuel demand due to increased holiday travel during school and college vacations.

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) sales also posted modest growth, rising 2.9 per cent to 659,900 tonnes in July. The volume was 2.3 per cent higher than the 641,300 tonnes consumed in July 2024 and 16.5 per cent above the 566,600 tonnes recorded in July 2023. On a monthly basis, ATF sales eased 4.6 per cent from 691,700 tonnes in June.

In contrast, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption continued to weaken, falling 17.4 per cent to 2.37 million tonnes during the month.

Industry officials attributed the decline primarily to a shift by some consumers from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG) following supply disruptions triggered by the West Asia crisis.

LPG demand has been under pressure since the regional conflict disrupted supplies, prompting restrictions on consumption in sectors such as hotels and restaurants. Although those curbs were lifted last month and sales recovered 8.6 per cent month-on-month to 2.18 million tonnes in June, overall consumption remained below year-earlier levels as several industrial and commercial users continued to rely on piped natural gas instead of LPG.

July LPG sales were 13.3 per cent lower than the 2.73 million tonnes recorded in July 2024 and 1.1 per cent below the 2.39 million tonnes consumed in July 2023, reflecting the continued shift in fuel usage across commercial and industrial segments.

Name Adani Total Gas raises CNG prices by ₹4 per kg amid rising LNG costs

Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) has increased CNG prices by ₹4 per kg across its operating areas from August 1, citing higher natural gas sourcing costs caused by reduced domestic gas availability and elevated global LNG prices. Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) has raised compressed natural gas (CNG) prices by ₹4 per kg across its geographical areas, effective from August 1, citing a sharp increase in sourcing costs for natural gas due to reduced domestic gas availability and elevated global LNG prices amid geopolitical tensions.

In Ahmedabad, CNG will now retail at ₹94.02 per kg, inclusive of all taxes, marking one of the steepest revisions in recent months. The increase is expected to raise fuel costs for thousands of private vehicle owners, auto-rickshaw operators and commercial transport fleets that have increasingly shifted to CNG. The hike has also widened the price gap with state-run Gujarat Energy Ltd (GEL), which retails CNG at ₹85.01 per kg in its operating areas.

Several Gujarat-based ATGL dealers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said ATGL has raised CNG prices for the fifth time since April 2026 when the prices stood at ₹81.36 per kilogram. After today’s hike there wouldnearly be a ₹9 per kg price differential between ATGL and GEL prices and it could adversely affect demand, particularly in rural markets where consumers can switch suppliers. “This way we will end up losing customers, especially in rural areas of the state where GEL is selling CNG at ₹85.01 per kilogram,” one dealer said.

Company cites higher gas sourcing costs

Defending the revision, an ATGL spokesperson said the company had been compelled to pass on part of the increase in input costs.”The revision in CNG prices has been necessitated by a significant increase in natural gas sourcing costs arising from reduced availability of domestic gas, supply curtailments, and elevated global gas prices due to geopolitical issues. Despite these challenges, ATGL continues to make every effort to minimise the impact on consumers while ensuring uninterrupted supply of CNG, which remains an economical and environmentally friendly fuel option,” the spokesperson stated.

According to the company, global LNG markets have witnessed exceptional volatility over the past six months. LNG prices, which were in the $10-13 per MMBTU range in February, surged after the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East disrupted LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical export route for Qatar and the UAE, which together accounted for nearly 59% of India’s LNG imports in 2025. Benchmark spot prices, including the Japan-Korea Marker (JKM) and the West India Marker (WIM), climbed to around $25 per MMBTU in early March before easing during April and June. However, prices remained well above pre-conflict levels and rose again to $19-22 per MMBTU in July amid renewed regional tensions and continued disruption to Hormuz transit.

Domestic gas shortages add to pricing pressure

The rise in imported LNG prices has coincided with lower availability of domestically produced natural gas, forcing city gas distribution companies to procure imported fuel at a higher cost. While the government allocates domestic gas to city gas distributors for priority segments such as CNG and piped natural gas (PNG), any reduction in these allocations raises procurement costs and puts pressure on retail pricing.

CNG demand remains resilient despite price hike

Despite the increase, demand for CNG has remained robust. During the June quarter, ATGL reported an 18% year-on-year increase in CNG sales volume to 218 million standard cubic metres (MMSCM), while overall gas sales volumes rose 13% to 303 MMSCM, driven by network expansion and higher throughput across multiple geographical areas. The company currently operates across 53 geographical areas spanning 125 districts in 18 states and three Union Territories, with a combined network of 1,167 CNG stations, including joint ventures. Six new CNG stations were added during the June quarter.

J M Baxi Group enters LPG shipping business with $87.3 million VLGC purchase

The J M Baxi Group has purchased one of three vessels sold by LPG shipping giant Dorian LPG Ltd, marking the Indian logistics conglomerate’s first foray into the sector. This comes after Dorian LPG announced on Thursday that it had sold the Bahamas-flagged ship Constellation (IMO: 9734680) to an unnamed buyer in a deal that delivered $87.3 million (about ₹8,327 crore) in proceeds to the VLGC specialist. It was later revealed that the 2015-built very large gas carrier (VLGC), with a capacity of 84,000 cubic metres, had joined the fleet of J M Baxi Marine Energy, a Singapore-registered subsidiary of the J M Baxi Group.

Built at South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries, the Constellation was purchased by J M Baxi Marine Energy Pte Ltd in a 50-50 partnership with one of the top cash buyers of ships for recycling, as per an ET Infra report.

It was since reflagged with the Singapore flag, and renamed Tiny Daisy.

The report added that the exhaust gas scrubber-fitted VLGC, managed by the shipping giant Synergy Marine Group, is currently on charter to a global oil major, with ship trackers showing it en route to the Sohar Port in Oman after departing from the Mundra Port last week.

Marine exhaust gas cleaning systems, which are often called scrubbers, are those that remove sulphur oxides and boiler exhaust gases from the ship.

Notably, this comes at a time when spot rates for just booking VLGCs have soared to $150,000 per day for shipments outside the Arabian Gulf, which rises to $300,000 per day for shipments inside the embattled Arabian Gulf.

This is not only due to the risks associated with commercial shipping in the Arabian Gulf, but also due to the soaring war risk insurance premiums as a byproduct of the four-month-long war in the Gulf.

Though the war is seeing a tense impasse for now, shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea remains incredibly fraught with risks—not just due to the active possibility of militant groups shooting at vessels, but also due to the presence of naval mines (in parts of the Strait of Hormuz, for example).

The J M Baxi move also comes just months after it signed an agreement with Japan’s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd (K LINE) and GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL) in January this year to jointly own a 174,000-cubic-metre LNG carrier currently under construction at South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.

The finished LNG carrier will be delivered by 2027, after which it will be deployed on a long-term time charter with GAIL.

Govt to adopt appropriate measures to mitigate fuel price volatility: MoS Finance

New Delhi: The government will continue to adopt appropriate fiscal and administrative measures to mitigate the impact of future fuel price volatility while maintaining fiscal sustainability, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said on Tuesday. Since the beginning of the West Asia conflict, PSU OMCs have marginally increased the retail prices of petrol and diesel despite sharp increases in international crude oil prices, he said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

He said despite severe disruptions in global energy markets, the measures taken by the government helped cushion the impact on consumers and the domestic economy.

In March, the government reduced the Central excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 per litre to protect consumers from the impact of elevated international crude oil prices. The excise duty reduction partly offset the under-recoveries being absorbed by public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs), enabling them to continue supplying fuel without disruption.

“The government’s strategy is to accommodate such measures within the available budgetary space by closely monitoring revenue and expenditure trends, reprioritising expenditure, and taking appropriate fiscal measures as warranted by evolving economic conditions,” Chaudhary said.

This enables the government to respond to unforeseen shocks, such as elevated international crude oil prices, while continuing to meet budgetary commitments, support macroeconomic stability and adhere to the fiscal consolidation path, he added.

Brent crude oil prices peaked at USD 138.2 per barrel in April 2026, exerting upward pressure on global energy prices and domestic producer prices. However, to protect consumers, the government limited the increase in domestic retail prices of petrol and diesel to a marginal level, he said.

“The Government will continue to adopt appropriate fiscal and administrative measures to mitigate the impact of future fuel price volatility while maintaining fiscal sustainability,” Chaudhary said.

He said ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation, adherence to the fiscal consolidation path, enhancing energy security through diversification of crude oil import sources and expansion of Strategic Petroleum Reserves, promoting alternative and cleaner fuels, and improving energy efficiency will reduce the economy’s vulnerability to external energy shocks while supporting sustainable and resilient economic growth.

Moreover, the impact on consumer prices remained relatively contained, with average CPI inflation at 3.9 per cent during April-June 2026, below the RBI’s inflation target of 4 +/-2 per cent.

Centre plans global standard to improve gas pipeline efficiency

SUMMARY Gas pipeline coatings are designed to reduce friction inside pipelines, improve gas flow, lower energy consumption during transportation and provide temporary corrosion protection. Natural gas is transported across India through high-pressure steel transmission pipelines linking gas fields, LNG import terminals and cross-border supply points. Photographer: Mark H. Milstein/Bloomberg News. Gas pipeline coatings are designed to reduce friction inside pipelines, improve gas flow, lower energy consumption during transportation and provide temporary corrosion protection.

To strengthen India’s energy infrastructure, the Centre is working to improve the efficiency and durability of the country’s gas transportation network by adopting an internationally recognised quality standard for friction-reduction coatings used inside steel gas pipelines.

The proposal comes as India accelerates the expansion of its natural gas pipeline network amid heightened energy security concerns following the West Asia war. The government aims to raise natural gas’s share in the energy mix to 15% by 2030 from about 6.5%, driven by wider adoption of piped natural gas and greater use of gas in long-haul transport.

Natural gas is transported across India through high-pressure steel transmission pipelines linking gas fields, LNG import terminals and cross-border supply points with city gas distribution networks, fertiliser plants, refineries, power stations and industrial consumers.

According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), the country has 25,923 km of operational gas transmission pipelines, while another 9,954 km is under construction, taking the total authorised network to 34,238 km.

As gas travels over long distances, compressor stations maintain pressure across the network. By reducing the roughness of the pipe’s internal surface, friction-reduction coatings minimize pressure losses and improve transportation efficiency.

“These coatings are designed to reduce friction inside pipelines, improve gas flow, lower energy consumption during transportation and provide temporary corrosion protection to the internal surface of pipelines during storage and transportation, helping extend the life of critical energy infrastructure,” an official close to the development said.

BIS proposes adopting global benchmark

The draft standard, placed in the public domain on 24 July for a two-month stakeholder consultation, lays down uniform technical requirements and testing methods for coating materials, application and performance to ensure consistent quality across the pipeline ecosystem.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has proposed adopting ISO 15741:2016 as an Indian Standard, providing a uniform benchmark for internal coatings used in steel gas transmission pipelines.

“The objective is to harmonise Indian Standards with internationally accepted best practices wherever considered appropriate and in the national interest,” a BIS spokesperson said in response to Mint’s queries.

Stakeholder comments will be examined by BIS’s paints, varnishes and related products sectional committee (CHD 20) before the standard is finalized.

The implementation of the standard will remain voluntary unless the government subsequently notifies it under a Quality Control Order (QCO). No decision has been taken so far on issuing such an order.

Companies choosing to adopt the standard will need to comply with its technical requirements, including specifications relating to coating materials, process controls, testing and quality assurance measures, depending on their existing manufacturing practices and infrastructure.

While complying with these requirements may entail additional implementation costs for some organisations, the actual costs and long-term benefits, including improved operational efficiency, reduced pressure losses and enhanced handling protection, will depend on the specific operating conditions, pipeline design and implementation practices adopted by individual organisations, a second official close to the matter said.

“As most pipeline operators already use internal friction-reduction coatings based on company or project-specific specifications, the proposed BIS standard is aimed at providing a common nationally recognised benchmark, enabling manufacturers, pipeline operators and testing laboratories to work with a uniform set of technical requirements, testing methods and performance criteria,” said the second official.

Experts call for India-specific adaptation

International standards should function as an integrated system covering the entire pipeline lifecycle rather than as isolated technical documents, said Anil Bhardwaj, fellow at the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) and pipeline internal corrosion expert.

“India should harmonise its national requirements with internationally recognised standards but adapt them to Indian operating conditions, organisational capabilities, ageing assets, climatic diversity, densely populated areas and the large number of non-piggable pipelines,” he said.

“Pipeline corrosion is technically manageable. Failures generally occur not because corrosion is an unknown phenomenon, but because warning signs are missed, responsibilities are fragmented, data are not integrated, or timely corrective action is deferred,” he said.

Maharashtra Cabinet Approves 25 Percent Land Transfer Fee Exemption for Renewable Energy Projects

The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved a 25 percent exemption on land transfer fees for land purchased for renewable energy projects to reduce project costs and accelerate renewable energy development in the state. The decision will be incorporated into the Maharashtra Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy 2025-36. Under the existing provisions, when land purchased for renewable energy projects is transferred within a group company or to a subsidiary, a transfer fee equivalent to 25 percent of the land’s market value, based on the prevailing Annual Statement of Rates, is required to be deposited with the District Collector.

According to the state government, the fee was creating an additional financial burden for renewable energy projects and contributing to delays in project implementation.

The exemption is therefore intended to reduce upfront costs and facilitate faster development of renewable energy projects.  The exemption will be applicable subject to the condition that the final use of the land remains for renewable energy development. If a company avails the exemption through an internal transfer but subsequently uses or sells the land for another purpose, the applicable transfer duty will be recovered along with interest.

The Cabinet has also decided that while the stamp duty applicable to the initial purchase of land for renewable energy projects will be paid by the main company, the stamp duty on subsequent transfer of the land to a group company or a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed for the project will be completely waived.

The state government said the measure is aimed at reducing the additional financial burden on renewable energy companies and expediting project execution. The decision will form part of the Maharashtra Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy 2025-36.

US becomes India’s largest LNG supplier as Qatar’s share slumps 91% during May-July: Report

The United States has overtaken Qatar to become India’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a significant shift in the country’s import mix as buyers diversify sourcing amid changing global market dynamics. According to Equirus Securities, LNG imports from Qatar plunged 91% year-on-year during May-July 2026, while supplies from the US surged sharply.

India imported 7.08 million tonnes (MT) of LNG during the three-month period, up 15% from a year earlier, according to Equirus Securities’ latest report, Natural Gas Compass | Monthly Edition: Consumption Returns to Pre-War Normal. The report noted that India’s LNG import basket has increasingly shifted towards the US, Africa and non-Qatari Middle East suppliers, reducing its immediate dependence on Qatar.

The US supplied 2.19 MT of LNG during May-July, registering a 253% year-on-year increase to emerge as India’s largest supplier. Nigeria followed with 1.31 MT (+124%), while Oman supplied 1.22 MT, recording the sharpest growth among major suppliers at 341%. Angola contributed 0.80 MT, while UAE shipments declined 34% to 0.55 MT. Qatar’s supplies fell to just 0.23 MT, down 91% from the year-ago period.

India’s LNG Imports (May–July 2026)

India’s natural gas consumption

The report also highlighted a recovery in India’s natural gas consumption. Total gas demand rose to 197 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) in June, up 7% month-on-month and 2% year-on-year. Ex-power demand increased to 176 mmscmd, approaching pre-disruption levels.

LNG consumption climbed to 110 mmscmd, registering growth of 13% over May and 10% from a year earlier, while domestic gas consumption remained stable at 87 mmscmd. As a result, import dependence stood at 56%, underlining the growing role of imported LNG in meeting India’s energy needs.

The recovery in gas demand was broad-based across sectors. City Gas Distribution (CGD) remained the largest consumer at 58 mmscmd, followed by the fertiliser sector at 55 mmscmd and miscellaneous industries at 41 mmscmd. Gas demand from the power sector improved to 21 mmscmd, while refineries consumed 15 mmscmd. Petrochemical demand recovered to 7 mmscmd, although it remained 48% lower than a year ago.

LNG imports

India also maintained healthy LNG imports despite elevated global prices. LNG berth arrivals stood at 2.4 MT in May and 2.3 MT in June, taking first-quarter FY27 arrivals to 6.2 MT. Provisional data showed arrivals of 2.1 MT in July.

Globally, the report noted that China’s LNG imports have moved above seasonal averages after a subdued start to the year, increasing competition for flexible cargoes. Meanwhile, European gas storage stood at 58%, below historical averages ahead of winter, while Asian spot LNG prices remained above USD 20 per mmbtu.

Equirus expects India’s gas demand to remain strong in July at levels similar to or marginally below June due to softer power demand, before moderating in August because of lower demand from Morbi and seasonal factors.

LNG Shift Adds New Dimension to India-US Trade Talks

The United States has overtaken Qatar as India’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking one of the most significant shifts in India’s energy import strategy in decades and underscoring how geopolitics is redrawing global energy trade. The transition, triggered by supply disruptions in West Asia and India’s scramble to diversify sourcing, extends well beyond the energy sector. It comes at a time when New Delhi and Washington are negotiating a broader bilateral trade agreement, raising the prospect that energy could become a strategic bargaining chip in the world’s fastest-growing major economy’s relationship with its largest trading partner.

According to Equirus Securities’ latest report, “Natural Gas Compass | Monthly Edition: Consumption Returns to Pre-War Normal,” India imported 7.08 million tons (MT) of LNG during May-July 2026, a 15 per cent increase over the same period last year. The United States supplied 2.19 MT, registering a staggering 253 per cent year-on-year increase, making it India’s largest LNG supplier for the first time. Nigeria followed with 1.31 MT, Oman with 1.22 MT, Angola with 0.80 MT, while Qatar—traditionally India’s dominant supplier—saw shipments collapse 91 per cent to just 0.23 MT.

The figures represent a dramatic reversal in India’s LNG sourcing pattern. For more than two decades, Qatar had anchored India’s gas security through long-term contracts with relatively stable oil-linked pricing. Today, the country’s LNG import basket is increasingly dominated by American, African and non-Qatari Middle Eastern supplies, fundamentally altering both its energy security architecture and geopolitical exposure.

Energy security through diversification—or new dependence?

At first glance, the shift appears to strengthen India’s energy security. Diversification reduces concentration risk after geopolitical tensions in West Asia exposed the vulnerability of relying heavily on a single supplier. The report notes that India has successfully broadened its procurement strategy, sourcing LNG from multiple regions instead of depending overwhelmingly on Qatar.

However, the diversification also reflects a more uncomfortable reality: India’s growing dependence on imported LNG. Natural gas consumption recovered sharply to 197 million metric standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd) in June, up 7 per cent month-on-month and 2 per cent year-on-year, returning to pre-conflict levels. LNG consumption climbed to 110 mmscmd, increasing 13 per cent sequentially and 10 per cent annually, while domestic gas supply remained stagnant at 87 mmscmd. As a result, import dependence rose to 56 per cent, meaning imported LNG now accounts for more than half of India’s gas requirements.

That dependence is structural rather than temporary. The recovery has been powered almost entirely by imported LNG instead of rising domestic production, raising questions about whether India’s ambition to increase natural gas’s share in the national energy mix can be achieved without exposing itself to international market volatility.

Stronger US ties, but a more complex trade equation

The timing of America’s emergence as India’s largest LNG supplier is strategically significant.

India and the United States remain engaged in negotiations over a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement amid continuing disagreements over tariffs, agriculture, digital commerce and market access. One of Washington’s longstanding concerns has been reducing its trade deficit with India.

Although the Equirus report makes no connection between LNG imports and trade negotiations, the surge in American energy exports could strengthen the economic foundation of the bilateral relationship. Every additional LNG cargo purchased from the United States adds to American exports while helping narrow the bilateral merchandise trade imbalance, potentially providing New Delhi greater negotiating flexibility in other contentious areas.

Energy is increasingly becoming an important pillar of India-US strategic engagement, alongside defense, technology and critical minerals.

For Washington, India represents one of the fastest-growing LNG markets in the world. For New Delhi, American LNG provides diversification away from politically volatile supply regions while deepening commercial ties with a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific.

Yet the relationship is unlikely to be one-sided.

As India’s dependence on American LNG grows, Washington’s energy policies, export approvals and domestic production decisions could acquire greater significance for India’s energy security.

A changing global LNG order

The report suggests the shift is occurring against a backdrop of profound changes in global LNG markets.

The United States has consolidated its position as the world’s leading LNG exporter following massive investments in export infrastructure. Equirus notes that US LNG exports remained robust at 10.5-10.7 MT during June and July, while seven new American LNG projects have reached final investment decision since export approvals resumed in January 2025.

This expansion is allowing the United States to replace disrupted Middle Eastern supplies across Asia and Europe, transforming energy exports into an increasingly influential instrument of American economic diplomacy.

For India, however, sourcing more LNG from North America changes the economics of imports.

Unlike Qatar’s long-term oil-indexed contracts, US LNG is more closely linked to Henry Hub gas prices, liquefaction fees and international freight costs. Cargoes also travel much longer distances, making Indian buyers more exposed to shipping disruptions, insurance costs and maritime security risks through strategic sea lanes including the Red Sea and Suez Canal.

Demand recovery masks structural vulnerabilities

Domestically, gas demand has rebounded across almost every major consuming sector.

City gas distribution (CGD) consumption reached 58 mmscmd, miscellaneous industries 41 mmscmd, fertilizer 55 mmscmd, refinery demand 15 mmscmd, and gas-fired power generation improved to 21 mmscmd. Petrochemical demand recovered to 7 mmscmd, although it remained 48 per cent below last year’s level.

Import infrastructure has also operated at elevated levels.

LNG arrivals totaled 2.4 MT in May and 2.3 MT in June, taking first-quarter FY27 imports to 6.2 MT, while preliminary July arrivals remained robust at 2.1 MT, despite rising international prices.

The willingness of Indian buyers to continue importing large volumes despite expensive spot prices illustrates both resilient demand and limited alternatives.

China’s return raises the stakes

India’s diversification strategy also faces fresh global challenges.

China has returned aggressively to LNG markets after a subdued start to the year, with imports now exceeding seasonal averages. Since global LNG trade has remained broadly unchanged at around 34.5 MT per month, stronger Chinese buying is redirecting existing cargoes rather than drawing from abundant new supply.

Europe adds another layer of uncertainty.

Gas storage across the European Union stood at just 58 per cent ahead of winter, well below historical norms. Combined with recovering Chinese demand, this has pushed Asian spot LNG prices above US$20 per million British thermal units (mmbtu), increasing procurement costs for major importers such as India.

If Europe experiences a severe winter or Chinese demand accelerates further, India could once again find itself competing aggressively for flexible LNG cargoes.

Strategic gains—but new vulnerabilities

Equirus expects Indian gas demand to remain broadly stable through July before moderating in August because of seasonal factors and lower industrial consumption from Morbi’s ceramic cluster.

But the report points to a larger structural transformation.

India has reduced its dependence on a single supplier, improving resilience against regional disruptions. At the same time, it has become more dependent on imported LNG itself, tying its energy future more closely to international prices, US export capacity, global shipping routes and geopolitical competition.

The United States replacing Qatar as India’s largest LNG supplier is therefore not merely a statistical milestone. It reflects the emergence of energy as a strategic pillar of India-US economic relations, one that could reinforce bilateral trade ties while simultaneously exposing India to new forms of geopolitical and market risk. For policymakers, the challenge will be to leverage deeper energy cooperation with Washington without exchanging one form of dependence for another.

Shipping Corp of India opens bidding for six LNG-ready boxships

State-owned Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has launched a global tender for up to six 8,000 teu containerships in a programme worth an estimated $720m as New Delhi steps up efforts to rebuild a national liner fleet. The tender covers two firm vessels and options for a further four, with bids due by August 31 and opening scheduled for September 1. The contract may ultimately be awarded to SCI, a joint venture or a special-purpose vehicle, allowing the ships to become part of the planned Bharat Container Shipping Line.

The LNG dual-fuel-ready ships will be built under a framework designed to support India’s shipbuilding ambitions. Indian yards will have the right to match the lowest qualified foreign bid, while domestic builders without experience constructing containerships of this size can participate by partnering with an overseas yard that has delivered at least two vessels above 5,000 teu over the past decade and has LNG dual-fuel design experience.

The tender also requires the successful shipyard to build the vessels at its own facilities, preventing complete outsourcing of construction.

The proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line would bring together SCI, Container Corporation of India, Sagarmala Finance Corporation, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Chennai Port Authority and V O Chidambaranar Port Authority as India looks to establish a stronger presence in international liner shipping.

The latest move follows SCI’s fleet renewal drive, which has included orders for methanol-ready feeder containerships, product tankers, very large gas carriers and offshore vessels.

India emerges as world’s second-fastest growing solar energy market

New Delhi: India’s installed solar power capacity has surged by a massive 50-fold from a mere 3 GW in 2014 to scale the 162.15 GW mark till June 30, 2026, marking the dawn of a new era in renewable energy, according to a factsheet issued by the government on Sunday. The country added 37 GW of solar capacity in 2025, surpassing the United States in annual additions to emerge as the world’s second-largest solar growth market, it said.

One of the most significant developments in the solar sector has been the decline in power tariffs over the past decade. This was driven by bidding through the e-Reverse Auction mechanism, where developers compete to supply electricity at the lowest tariff. As more developers participated, the tariffs declined from around Rs 18 per unit in 2010 to a record-low of Rs 2.44 per unit.

The decline in tariffs has made solar power increasingly affordable. As a result, India has emerged as one of the world’s lowest-cost solar power markets. In 2025, the Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE) from utility-scale solar PV stood at $35 per MWh, well below the global average of $44 per MWh.

India’s solar sector has received a major boost with the approval of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) on July 31, 2026. The scheme aims to support 5,000 MW of Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) projects with co-located Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The ESS with a minimum storage capacity of two hours (10,000 MWh) will further help states manage peak demand. By utilising existing reservoirs and industrial ponds, the scheme will reduce pressure on scarce land resources. It will also improve grid reliability through integrated energy storage. With an outlay of Rs 5,070 crore, the scheme will be implemented from FY 2026– 27 to FY 2030– 31.

Large solar projects in India contribute 118.79 GW of installed capacity. Some of the large solar projects include the Bhadla Solar Park (Rajasthan), Pavagada Solar Park (Karnataka), and Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Park (Madhya Pradesh). Rooftop solar systems connected to the electricity grid contribute another 27.88 GW. The remaining capacity comes from hybrid solar projects and off-grid solar systems. Hybrid projects combine solar power with battery storage or other power sources, while Off-grid systems provide electricity in areas not connected to the grid.

Total non-fossil fuel capacity reached 283.46 GW, including 274.68 GW of renewable energy capacity. On 29 July 2025, renewable energy sources met 51.5 per cent of India’s electricity demand, the highest monthly share recorded so far.

At COP26 in Glasgow, India announced the Panchamrit goals, which include 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. These commitments were reflected in India’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.

PM Surya Ghar scheme crosses 50 lakh rooftop solar installations, July records highest monthly additions

New Delhi [India], August 4 (ANI): The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed the milestone of 50.06 lakh households benefiting from rooftop solar installations, marking a sharp acceleration in deployment since the scheme was launched, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The scheme, launched with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, has achieved the milestone in just over two years, compared with 7.94 lakh rooftop solar installations recorded during the preceding ten years. The government said the programme is now adding one lakh beneficiary households every six days, with the pace of installations rising 3.2 times over the last nine months.

In July 2026, 5.06 lakh households benefited from rooftop solar installations, the highest monthly figure recorded since the scheme began. Daily installations increased from 5,038 in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 in July 2026.

The government has released Rs 28,024 crore in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Nearly 19 lakh households are now receiving zero electricity bills, while more than 12 lakh households collectively earned Rs 421 crore from selling surplus power in FY 2024-25. This translates into additional income of around Rs 3,500 annually per household for those exporting electricity to the grid.

The scheme has also expanded access to rooftop solar among lower-income households. Under the Utility Led Aggregation model, 1.6 lakh installations have been completed for PMAY, BPL and SC/ST households across four states, while concessional loans at 5.75 per cent have been sanctioned for 21.87 lakh applicants. Overall, 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been commissioned under the scheme.

The programme has created a growing ecosystem of 34,219 registered vendors, including 29,469 active vendors, while more than 2.32 lakh people have been trained under capacity-building programmes.

The government said the scheme operates through a 100 per cent online, end-to-end digital process, covering applications, loans, net metering and subsidy release. It has also introduced deemed approval and feasibility waiver for rooftop solar systems up to 10 kW, while 32 States and Union Territories have removed application and net-metering charges.

The scheme has also expanded to government infrastructure, with 1.06 lakh government buildings solarised so far, reinforcing the government’s focus on decentralised clean energy and household-level energy security. (ANI)

Turkmenistan Reviews Progress on TAPI Gas Pipeline, Prioritizes Hydrocarbon Expansion

The Kabul Tribune (KT) — Turkmenistan’s government has reviewed progress on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) natural gas pipeline and reaffirmed plans to expand hydrocarbon production as part of its strategy to boost energy exports and regional cooperation. According to a statement released Sunday by the state-owned oil concern Turkmennebit, the issues were discussed during a government meeting on the performance of the country’s oil and gas sector during the first seven months of 2026.

Senior officials from Turkmennebit, Turkmengaz, Turkmengeology and TAPI Pipeline Company Ltd., along with executives from sectoral associations and enterprises, presented reports on production and development activities.

The government said particular attention was given to construction of the Serhetabat-Herat section of the TAPI pipeline, which links Turkmenistan with neighboring Afghanistan.

“Particular attention was paid to construction of the main Serhetabat-Herat section of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline in compliance with international standards,” the statement said.

Officials also outlined priorities for the energy sector, including expanding geological exploration, increasing production drilling to identify new hydrocarbon deposits, boosting oil and natural gas output, and improving the quality of extracted resources.

The approximately 1,800-kilometer (1,120-mile) TAPI pipeline is designed to transport up to 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan’s Galkynysh gas field through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India. Turkmenistan has long promoted the project as a key route for diversifying its gas exports and strengthening regional economic integration.

The pipeline’s gas supplies are expected to come from the Galkynysh field, one of the world’s largest natural gas deposits, with estimated reserves exceeding 27 trillion cubic meters.

In April, Turkmengaz and China’s CNPC launched the fourth phase of Galkynysh’s development, a project that includes new production facilities and additional wells expected to increase commercial gas production by up to 10 billion cubic meters annually.

The TAPI project has gained renewed attention in recent months. In an analysis published in early June, the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School said the pipeline is re-emerging in regional energy discussions as a mechanism for connecting Turkmenistan’s gas resources with growing energy demand in South Asia.

Colombia: Petrobras hits new deepwater gas discovery offshore Colombia

Brazilian state-controlled company Petrobras has made a new natural gas discovery offshore Colombia, collecting additional evidence of the sheer magnitude of the Sirius area in the Andean nation. Petrobras has so far unlocked in-place volumes of more than 6 trillion cubic feet of gas in Sirius with the drilling of five wells in water depths of over 1000 metres in Block GUA-OFF-0 in the Guajira Offshore basin in the Colombian Caribbean Sea.

The company already has a plan in motion to begin output from Sirius early next decade via a subsea-to-shore solution through the installation of manifolds in the seabed and with production lines connected to shore.

According to Petrobras, drilling of the Sandia-1 wildcat, located approximately 42 kilometres from the coast, at water depths of 1251 metres, found more gas and will contribute to the region’s energy security.

Before Sandia-1, Petrobras discovered gas in the play with the drilling of the Sirius-1, Sirius-2 and Copoazu-1 wells. The Buena Suerte-1 well had no hydrocarbon shows.

Petrobras drilled Sandia-1 in about one-and-a-half months. “The zones where gas was detected are being carefully evaluated through well logs and will later be analysed in laboratory analysis,” said the company in a statement.

Petrobras used the Noble Corporation semi-submersible rig Noble Discoverer in the campaign. The charter agreement with Petrobras is due to complete this month.

The Brazilian oil giant operates Sirius with a 44.44% stake, while Colombia’s Ecopetrol holds the remaining 55.56% interest.

Bangladesh seeks natural gas imports from Myanmar through pipeline

Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from neighbouring Myanmar through a pipeline as it seeks to revive bilateral energy cooperation amid mounting pressure on domestic supplies. The proposal was made by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood during a meeting with Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh U Kyaw Soe Moe at the minister’s Secretariat office today.

Bangladesh is also interested in reviving an earlier proposal to build a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.

During the meeting, the minister said Bangladesh has substantial demand for natural gas and is particularly interested in securing supplies from Myanmar through a pipeline.

Responding positively to the proposal, the Myanmar ambassador said the two countries could also discuss the possibility of supplying gas to Bangladesh in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The two sides also discussed arranging a meeting between their respective ministers to advance energy cooperation. Mahmood said he would formally invite Myanmar’s energy minister to visit Bangladesh and was prepared to travel to Myanmar if necessary.

The proposal comes as Bangladesh’s domestic gas production continues to decline, making the country increasingly dependent on imported LNG to meet demands from power plants, industries and other consumers.

Referring to the proposal for a China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China, the minister said a pipeline linking Bangladesh and Myanmar could support such regional connectivity.

The two countries also discussed expanding long-term trade and energy cooperation and exploring other areas of mutual interest.

The Myanmar ambassador suggested that the matter could be reviewed through meetings of the Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Technical Committee.

State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit, Energy Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and Power Secretary Mirana Mahrukh were also present at the meeting.

FERC approves $5-B Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion to boost Southeast gas supply

USA: The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued an order on July 31 approving certificates of public convenience and necessity for the Mississippi Crossing Project (MSX), proposed by Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company, and the South System Expansion 4 Project (SSE4), jointly proposed by Southern Natural Gas Company and Elba Express Company. All three companies are affiliated with Kinder Morgan, one of the largest energy infrastructure operators in North America.

Together, the two projects will add more than 3.8 million dekatherms per day of incremental firm transportation capacity, creating a new pathway for gas to move from an interconnection with Tennessee Gas’ existing Line 100 in Washington County, Mississippi, to delivery points across the southeastern U.S.

The MSX Project alone calls for roughly 208 miles of new pipeline and lateral facilities in Mississippi and Alabama, three new compressor stations, four new meter stations and other supporting facilities, at an estimated cost of about $1.7 billion. It is designed to deliver 2.06 million dekatherms per day.

The SSE4 Project would expand Southern’s existing South Main Line system with 22 pipeline loops totaling roughly 291 miles across Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, along with new and upgraded compressor stations, at an estimated cost of about $3.3 billion. Elba Express, whose system runs through Georgia and South Carolina, would add two new compressor units and a meter station at a cost of about $160 million. Combined, the SSE4 facilities will provide roughly 1.323 million dekatherms per day of new capacity on Southern’s system and 460,300 dekatherms per day on Elba Express’ system.

Tennessee Gas has signed long-term precedent agreements covering about 93% of the MSX Project’s capacity, while Southern and Elba Express have contracted out 100% of the capacity created by SSE4. Shippers include utilities and cooperatives such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, Oglethorpe Power Corporation, Dominion Energy South Carolina, Southern Company Services, Atlanta Gas Light Company and South Carolina Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper).

Need and opposition. FERC found that the volume of signed, long-term transportation contracts — the standard the agency has long relied on to demonstrate market need — provided sufficient evidence that the projects are needed, noting that interstate pipelines serving the Southeast are operating near or above peak capacity.

The approval came over the objections of the Sierra Club, the Alabama Rivers Alliance and several other environmental and community groups, which argued that a large share of the contracted capacity involves Kinder Morgan affiliates and related companies, and that projected demand — particularly from data centers — is speculative. The groups also sought an evidentiary hearing and asked the Commission to delay its decision to consider additional market studies.

FERC denied the request for a hearing, saying the written record was sufficient to resolve the disputed issues, and found no evidence of self-dealing between the pipeline companies and their affiliated shippers that would justify looking beyond the signed contracts.

FERC’s approval follows a multiyear environmental review, including a final Environmental Impact Statement issued in June that concluded the projects’ effects on land use, water resources, air quality, noise and wildlife would be less than significant once mitigation measures are in place. The pipelines will cross the Natchez Trace Parkway and several rivers using horizontal directional drilling to avoid surface disturbance.

The order includes dozens of environmental conditions, including noise-mitigation plans near sensitive areas, biweekly construction status reports, and a requirement that Kinder Morgan’s companies obtain sign-off from FERC staff before beginning or completing construction. Separately, FERC is requiring Southern to notify the Commission of a related abandonment of aging pipeline and compressor equipment that will be replaced as part of the upgrade.

Tennessee Gas, Southern and Elba Express each have three years from the date of the order to complete construction and place the new facilities into service.

bp Takes Full Control of Trinidad’s Calypso Gas Project

bp will acquire Woodside’s 70% stake in the Calypso gas project, strengthening its Trinidad portfolio and supporting long-term regional gas production. bp has signed an agreement to acquire Woodside Energy’s 70% participating interest in Block TTDAA 14, home to the Calypso gas project offshore Trinidad and Tobago. Upon completion of the transaction, bp will own 100% of the project and become its operator, reinforcing its strategic position in one of the Caribbean’s most important natural gas-producing regions.

Calypso is an early-stage deepwater natural gas development located off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. Although the project remains in its development phase, it is considered a significant resource that could contribute to the country’s future gas supply. The acquisition aligns with bp’s strategy of expanding production through assets located near its existing infrastructure, allowing the company to capitalize on operational efficiencies and reduce future development costs.

bp already maintains a strong presence in Trinidad and Tobago, where it is the country’s largest supplier of natural gas to the domestic market. The company also holds a 45% interest in the Atlantic LNG export facility situated off the southwest coast of Trinidad. With an extensive network of offshore platforms, pipelines, and processing infrastructure already in place, bp is well positioned to integrate the Calypso project into its broader regional operations.

According to Gordon Birrell, Executive Vice President of Upstream at bp, the acquisition supports the company’s long-term growth strategy by building on the strengths of its existing assets. He noted that leveraging current infrastructure could help unlock additional gas production while strengthening bp’s position in the region’s upstream sector. The company believes that consolidating ownership of the project will simplify decision-making and improve development planning, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency.

The acquisition is expected to close before the end of 2026, subject to receiving approvals from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the relevant regulatory authorities. Once finalized, bp will assume full ownership and operatorship of Block TTDAA 14, giving the company complete control over the project’s development timeline and investment decisions.

The move also reflects the growing importance of natural gas in global energy markets, where demand remains resilient as many countries seek lower-carbon alternatives to coal and oil. By expanding its upstream gas portfolio in Trinidad and Tobago, bp aims to strengthen future production capacity, support domestic and export markets, and reinforce its long-term presence in the Caribbean energy sector.

Impact on Product and Chemical Commodity Prices

bp’s acquisition of full ownership in the Calypso gas project is expected to strengthen future natural gas supply from Trinidad and Tobago, although the impact will be long term because the project remains in its early development stage.

Increased gas availability could support LNG exports and provide stable feedstock for petrochemical production. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the immediate price impact is likely to be minimal. Over the longer term, improved gas availability may ease production costs for ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, urea, and other gas-based chemicals, potentially exerting downward pressure on prices if additional supply reaches global markets.

Congo’s LNG Expansion and Gas Investment Strategy to Drive Discussions at AEW 2026

As the Republic of Congo accelerates the development of its oil and gas sector, strengthening partnerships between government, international investors and domestic companies will be critical to unlocking opportunities across the energy value chain. This agenda will take center stage at African Energy Week (AEW) 2026, where the session “Invest in Congo: Strengthening Partnerships to Expand Congo’s Oil & Gas Value Chain” will bring together policymakers, industry leaders and investors to explore the next phase of the country’s energy growth.

Backed by supportive policy reforms and major upstream and gas developments, Congo is emerging as one of Central Africa’s most dynamic hydrocarbon markets. The country is targeting sustained production growth while leveraging its abundant natural gas resources to improve energy security, expand LNG exports and drive industrial development.

Eni’s Congo LNG project delivered the country’s first LNG exports in 2024 through the Tango FLNG facility, making the Republic of Congo one of Africa’s newest LNG exporters. The project has since entered its next phase with the start-up of the Nguya FLNG, a 2.4 million-ton-per-annum (MTPA) floating liquefaction facility that expands Congo LNG’s total capacity to approximately 3 MTPA. Developed within the Marine XII offshore concession, the project is strengthening Congo’s position in global LNG markets while enabling the monetization of offshore gas resources from the Nené and Litchendjili fields.

Looking ahead, Congo’s LNG ambitions could expand further, with a potential third FLNG project under consideration by Trident Energy adding another pathway to monetize offshore gas resources and reinforce the country’s emergence as a regional gas hub.

Beyond exports, Congo is advancing domestic gas development to strengthen energy security and industrial growth. Natural gas already supplies approximately 73% of the country’s electricity generation, while the government’s Gas Code is creating a dedicated legal and fiscal framework to encourage investment across the gas value chain. By incentivizing the commercialization of associated, marginal and stranded gas resources, the legislation aims to attract new capital while supporting infrastructure development, gas processing and downstream industrialization.

While these flagship developments are transforming the sector, maximizing their long-term impact will depend on building stronger partnerships between the state, the national oil company, international operators and Congolese businesses. Expanding local content, increasing technology transfer and strengthening domestic supply chains will be essential to ensuring that investment generates broad-based economic growth alongside higher production.

The “Invest in Congo” session at AEW 2026 will examine how strategic partnerships can accelerate upstream and downstream investment while expanding opportunities for local enterprises across the oil and gas value chain. Discussions will explore the investment potential created by the Gas Code, the market implications of Congo LNG’s expansion and the role of future FLNG developments in driving international market access and domestic economic growth.

“The Republic of the Congo is demonstrating how strategic partnerships, supportive policies and targeted investment can transform natural resources into long-term economic opportunity,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. “At AEW 2026, we look forward to bringing together the public and private sector leaders who are shaping Congo’s next chapter of energy growth and ensuring its oil and gas resources deliver lasting value for the country and its people.”

US neighbor switches on world’s first carbon capture system for gas turbines

Entropy Inc (Entropy), a subsidiary of Advantage Energy Limited (Advantage), has now officially completed works on its “Glacier Phase 2” carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the Glacier Gas Plant in Saddle Hills County, Alberta. This makes it the first commercial post-combustion CCS system applied to a natural-gas turbine generating electricity. According to the company, they have essentially added a chemical CO₂ scrubber to a natural-gas processing plant and a new gas-fired generator.

So, while the plant still burns natural gas for power, the exhaust gases are now scrubbed of, they claim, more than 90% of CO₂. The separated gases are then compressed and injected underground for long-term storage.

“We are proud of the work our team and service providers have done to safely bring Glacier Phase 2 online right on schedule,” explained Sanjay Bishnoi, Chief Executive Officer of Entropy, in a press release.

A first-of-its-kind carbon capture and storage setup

“This first-of-a-kind asset will provide reliable, baseload, low-carbon power to our customer, Advantage, and sell merchant power to the AESO system. As demand for reliable, low-emission electricity grows, we believe Glacier Phase 2 will mark an important milestone for the industry,” he added.

According to Entropy, the Glacier Gas Plant consists of two main kinds of gas-burning equipment. The first are eleven reciprocating gas engines, totaling about 30 MW, which mechanically drive compressors used to process and move natural gas. The second is a new 15 MW gas turbine that generates electricity.

Sabah to sign agreement with PETRONAS for 40% stake in floating liquefied natural gas facility

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is expected to receive a 40% stake in the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility project here under an agreement to be signed with PETRONAS soon. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor described this as one of the significant achievements resulting from the close cooperation between the state and Federal governments. He said the milestone was also made possible through the cooperation agreement previously signed with PETRONAS, which enables the Sabah government to participate actively in the state’s oil and gas industry.

He said the state would also receive a 20% stake in projects undertaken by PETRONAS at newly discovered oil and gas fields off the coast of Sandakan.

“We have successfully reached an agreement with PETRONAS and in the near future, perhaps within the next few months, we will sign an agreement under which Sabah will receive a 40% stake in the floating gas project in the state,” Hajiji said in a statement.

He said PETRONAS has secured an oil and gas field in Sandakan and Sabah would receive a

20% stake.

He said Sabah is also attracting increasing investor interest due to the state government’s investor-friendly policies, a fact acknowledged by foreign diplomats who visited the state to explore its investment potential.

“Nearly 40 foreign diplomats or high commissioners have met with me over the past five years. They are attracted to our investor-friendly policies. They said these policies will propel Sabah towards a better future and that is exactly what we are working to achieve,” he said.

Hajiji noted that existing industrial areas, particularly the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) and the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip), are approaching full capacity due to strong investor support.

As a result, he said, the state government is expanding new industrial zones, including the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) on the east coast and industrial parks based on the Blue Economy.

Germany augments gas arsenal as Uniper pens 20-year LNG deal with Canadian project

German energy player Uniper has signed off on a two-decade-long liquefied natural gas (LNG) deal with a multibillion-dollar LNG project being developed on Canada’s northwest coast to export lower-carbon LNG to energy markets. Uniper and Ksi Lisims LNG have signed a long-term LNG sale and purchase agreement (SPA) for the delivery of 2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG, approximately 30 terawatt hours, on a free-on-board (FOB) basis to the German firm for up to 20 years, in the presence of Katherina Reiche, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, and Vera Alexander, Canadian Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.

Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, commented: “This agreement is about far more than LNG. By signing this long-term off-take agreement, we are strengthening Uniper’s portfolio with a reliable source of LNG from Canada. As a trusted partner, Canada helps to broaden Europe’s energy supply and strengthens resilience against future disruptions.

“In an increasingly uncertain world, diversification is a strategic necessity. The project combines security of supply, low-carbon hydropower infrastructure and a strong partnership – exactly the kind of long-term energy partnership we seek to build.”

With first deliveries expected from 2032, the European company claims that this deal marks the first major long-term LNG supply arrangement between Canada and Germany and represents a significant step in strengthening the strategic energy partnership between the two countries.

Davis Thames, President, Founder and CEO of Western LNG, emphasized: “The LNG sales agreement that we have entered into today with Uniper is our first with a European utility, and the beginning of an important long-term relationship between our companies. Canada is naturally endowed with a world-class natural gas resource, which, through responsible development, is one of the lowest emissions production complexes in the world.

“Paired with an abundant hydro resource, Ksi Lisims LNG will be one of the lowest emissions sources of LNG in the world. We look forward to commercializing the rest of the project so that we can move into construction shortly.”

This SPA comes more than two months after the Ksi Lisims LNG project, which was proposed by the Nisga’a Nation, Rockies LNG, and Western LNG, obtained a heads of agreement (HOA) with Germany’s Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) for the sale and purchase of 1 million tonnes per annum of LNG.

The agreement marks an important milestone for Uniper as the company continues to build a resilient and diversified long-term LNG portfolio. The fully destination-flexible volumes provide additional flexibility to support security of supply in Europe when needed.

Eva Clayton, President of Nisga’a Lisims Government, highlighted: “Since time immemorial, the Nisga’a people have adhered to the concept of a Common Bowl. This foundational idea teaches that we are all interdependent and directs us to share our abundance with others.

“Today, that same spirit of sharing has led us to pursue LNG exports on the global stage. We are proud that this agreement with Uniper reflects the Common Bowl philosophy, and we are grateful to see governments on both sides working together to make it possible.”

According to Uniper, a distinctive feature of the Ksi Lisims LNG project is its planned use of hydroelectricity to power the liquefaction process. By combining access to Canadian natural gas resources with renewable electricity from British Columbia’s hydroelectric system, the project is expected to produce LNG with a 90% lower carbon intensity than conventional LNG facilities.

Reiche underlined: “This agreement sends a strong signal for greater security of supply and strategic independence: Uniper is securing around two million tonnes of Canadian LNG per year over the long term, equivalent to approximately 30 terawatt-hours.

“This is how we strengthen our resilience: through new sources of supply, long-term partnerships and greater diversification. Canada is a strategic partner for us – reliable, rich in natural resources and closely connected to Germany through strong economic ties.”

Ksi Lisims LNG, which means “from the Nass River” in the Nisga’a language, is a proposed net-zero liquefied natural gas project in British Columbia, located on Nisga’a Nation-owned land on the northern tip of Pearse Island.

Powered by renewable hydroelectricity, the LNG project is designed to be one of the lowest-emission-intensity LNG facilities in the world with a pathway to net-zero. The facility will produce 12 million tonnes per annum of LNG from two floating LNG (FLNG) production and storage facilities.

The 12-mtpa natural gas liquefaction and marine terminal project is envisioned to receive 1.7–2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and export it overseas once commercial operations start in late 2028 or 2029. The project obtained a 40-year export license from the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) two years before the first LNG offtake agreement was inked with Shell.

Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Canada, noted: “This agreement between Ksi Lisims LNG and Uniper represents more than an energy partnership. It is a powerful example of how, by working with allies like Germany, Canada can strengthen its economy and sovereignty, and support global energy security.

“Amidst energy market disruptions, international demand for reliable energy only continues to grow, and projects like this – developed in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and providing best-in-class low-carbon energy – demonstrate how Canada is not only a competitive, but a leading, energy superpower.”

ASP Isotopes Secures Five-Year LNG Offtake for Virginia Gas Project

ASP Isotopes announced a five-year LNG supply agreement, strengthening Virginia Gas Project revenues while advancing South Africa’s domestic energy security. ASP Isotopes Inc., an advanced materials company specializing in technologies for the production of critical industrial materials, has announced that Tetra4 Proprietary Limited, a subsidiary of South African energy company Renergen Limited, has signed a new take-or-pay agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Virginia Gas Project in South Africa’s Free State province.

The newly signed contract covers a five-year period and involves the supply of LNG to a South African food processing company. Under the agreement, the customer will purchase LNG at an all-inclusive plant-gate price exceeding $16 per gigajoule (GJ), based on current exchange rates. The contract represents around 10% of the Phase 1 production capacity of the Virginia Gas Project and provides a stable revenue stream through its take-or-pay structure, which obligates the buyer to pay for the contracted volume regardless of actual consumption.

Paul Mann, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ASP Isotopes, stated that South Africa has experienced persistent electricity shortages and load-shedding over the past several years, creating strong demand for reliable alternative energy sources. He noted that LNG produced from the Virginia Gas Project will help local industrial customers improve energy security while reducing dependence on an unstable electricity supply.

Mann also highlighted that the company remains focused on completing Phase 1 of the project. Besides supplying LNG to domestic customers, the facility is expected to begin exporting liquid helium to international markets. Global helium availability has remained constrained due to geopolitical disruptions, making the project strategically important for industries that depend on a stable supply of the critical gas.

Phase 1 of the Virginia Gas Project is expected to produce approximately 2,500 GJ of LNG per day along with around 70 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of liquid helium daily. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin during the third quarter of 2026.

According to the company’s shareholder update issued on August 4, 2026, Phase 1 could generate annual revenue exceeding $27 million, assuming LNG prices remain between $15 and $18 per GJ and liquid helium averages approximately $600 per Mcf. ASP Isotopes expects revenue recognition to begin during the second half of 2026.

The company also confirmed that discussions continue with additional prospective customers for LNG and liquid helium supply from both Phase 1 and the planned Phase 2 expansion. Management expects to finalize the remaining Phase 1 offtake agreements during the third quarter of 2026 while initiating contracting for a substantial share of Phase 2 production later in the year.

Impact on Product and Chemical Commodity Prices

The five-year LNG offtake agreement strengthens demand certainty for LNG produced at the Virginia Gas Project, supporting stable production and encouraging further customer contracts. Reliable domestic LNG availability could reduce dependence on conventional fuels for South African industries while supporting broader industrial energy security. Increased helium production may also ease supply constraints in global specialty gas markets over time. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the development is expected to have a neutral-to-slightly bearish impact on regional LNG prices over the medium term as new supply enters the market. Downstream energy-intensive chemicals may also benefit from improved feedstock availability and more stable production costs.

A Strategic Partner in the Region

Transgaz holds a distinctive position among Europe’s gas infrastructure operators: it is the fourth-largest natural gas transmission system operator (TSO) in the European Union, and the only TSO that operates national gas transmission systems in two countries, one an EU member state and the other an EU accession candidate.

In recognition of that role, and of Romania’s strategic position in the region, Argent LNG has invited Transgaz to become a shareholder in Argent LNG. The primary objectives are to enable the transit of U.S. LNG through Romania to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and onward to Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany, among others, while diversifying Romania’s natural gas supply sources.

The MOU signed today establishes a non-binding framework for the parties to explore, structure, and negotiate the terms of this equity investment.

Transgaz has expressed its intention to become a shareholder in Argent LNG, alongside other major American companies. For Transgaz, the investment reflects a strategic interest in securing long-term access to U.S. LNG supply and in holding a direct stake in the company overseeing the broader Argent LNG development platform.

Building on Romania’s Investment in Regional Energy Security

Years of investment by Transgaz have given Romania a modernized, well-developed natural gas transmission infrastructure that meets contemporary standards. Combined with the Vertical Corridor, that infrastructure supports the diversification of gas supply sources and routes, reduces dependence on Russian gas, and strengthens the energy security of Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and the broader Central, Eastern, and Southeastern European and Balkan region.

Romania, through Transgaz, has led and supported the Vertical Corridor concept since 2016 as a strategic initiative to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas and to facilitate the supply of American LNG produced in the United States.

About the Vertical Corridor

The Vertical Gas Corridor is more than an energy infrastructure project, it is a backbone of regional energy security. By interconnecting the national natural gas transmission systems of Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania with those of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and with the transmission systems of Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany, the corridor creates a modern, secure, and efficient infrastructure capable of bidirectional gas flows that meet the region’s increasingly complex energy needs.

PRGT project to be built by Canadian construction companies

The Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project (PRGT) has signed a construction agreement with Surerus Murphy Joint Venture (SMJV). The signing marks the first of what will be an all-Canadian roster of contractors for land construction. Surerus Murphy is a joint venture between Surerus Pipeline Inc., a family-owned company based in Fort St. John, B.C., and J. Murphy & Sons, headquartered in the UK with Canadian offices in Calgary and Edmonton. Formed in 2015, Surerus Murphy combines more than 100 years of pipeline construction experience and has built major energy infrastructure projects across western Canada.

“I am excited by the opportunity that this project presents for Canada and our increasingly important energy export market, and to partner with Western LNG and the Nisga’a Nation,” said Mick Fitzpatrick, President of Surerus Murphy Joint Venture. “As an energy infrastructure construction company rooted in Western Canada, we understand the uniqueness of this project scope intimately, and we know we can use our experience to complete this work safely and responsibly while finding unique ways to contribute locally to the communities our work engages with.”

“There is no substitute for a contractor that has already built a pipeline through this terrain,” said Davis Thames, Founder, President, and CEO of Western LNG. “Surerus Murphy’s experience building major projects in northern B.C. means fewer surprises and faster problem-solving. We’re fortunate to be able to draw on the wisdom Canada’s construction industry has already gained in order to make PRGT a better project.”

As a condition of its contract, Surerus Murphy is required to develop a local and Indigenous participation plan – a standard PRGT applies to all of its prime contractors.

“Focusing on Canadian construction companies like SMJV for the land sections of PRGT is a deliberate decision,” said Eva Clayton, President of Nisga’a Lisims Government. “When we build with Canadian companies, and those companies subcontract to local and Indigenous businesses, that means huge benefits stay right here in British Columbia.”

Surerus Murphy’s agreement is the first terrestrial construction contract awarded on the project. The marine work was awarded to Allseas, a Swiss specialist in subsea pipeline construction. PRGT is working with Bechtel, one of the world’s leading engineering and construction firms, on overall execution planning for the pipeline project, including evaluating and selecting premier contractors.

PRGT is a natural gas pipeline that will safely and responsibly deliver natural gas from northeastern British Columbia to the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG facility on Canada’s northwest coast.

Middle East buyers interested in LNG cargoes from Canada, Pacific Energy says

CALGARY, Aug 7 (Reuters) – Buyers in the Middle East are looking to secure liquefied natural gas from Canada as a hedge against geopolitical turmoil, the president of the company that majority-owns Canada’s Woodfibre LNG project ‌said.

Ratnesh Bedi, president of Singapore-based Pacific Energy — which owns a 70% stake in the Woodfibre project currently under construction on Canada’s Pacific Coast near Squamish, B.C. — said in an interview that his company is fielding inquiries from Middle Eastern buyers even though the project’s 2.1 million tonnes per year of capacity is already fully contracted to BP (BP.L), opens new tab.

The interest reflects a broader shift among global LNG buyers seeking to diversify supply sources in the wake of the war in Iran and Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Even the Middle East, one of the world’s top LNG-producing regions, is now looking to secure backup supply from routes free of geopolitical chokepoints like the ones that threaten its own exports.

“Almost every week, someone is approaching us to say, ‘hey, do you still have capacity?'” Bedi said. “Very interestingly, not only is it north Asia that is coming, but to my surprise, even LNG suppliers out of Middle East are coming to find alternate supplies for their customers.”

Bedi declined to name the companies. A spokeswoman for Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson confirmed Middle Eastern buyers have expressed interest not only in investing in the Canadian LNG sector, but in securing physical LNG cargoes from Canada, the world’s fifth-largest natural gas producer.

“The federal government has heard strong interest from Middle Eastern companies in pursuing both LNG equity investments and offtake deals,” said spokeswoman Charlotte Power in an email.

The Woodfibre project, which Bedi said is targeting December 2027 for its first export cargo shipment, is one of several LNG facilities under construction on Canada’s west coast. The project’s geographic location offers shorter shipping times to Asian markets ‌than U.S. Gulf Coast LNG exporters, and Asian customers are increasingly interested in Canada as a supplier, Bedi said.

The war in Iran and the resulting Strait of Hormuz disruptions have changed the way LNG buyers think about their portfolios, Bedi said. Increasingly, buyers worldwide want geographic diversification that will allow them to procure short-term emergency supply if necessary without relying on the global spot market.

He added Canada benefits from this because its west coast LNG industry isn’t exposed to any geopolitical chokepoint, such as a strait or tight waterway that could be closed or blocked.

“(Buyers) are looking at what-if scenarios,” Bedi said. “They are thinking, ‘tomorrow, if something goes wrong, I should already be a customer of Canada.’

LONG-TERM DEALS

In the last several months, Germany’s SEFE and Uniper have both signed long-term offtake agreements with another Canadian LNG project, Ksi Lisims.

MidOcean, which is backed by EIG and Saudi Aramco, bought into Petronas’ stake in LNG Canada last year, another indication of growing international interest in Canada’s liquefied natural gas industry.

Bedi said despite Western Canada’s low natural gas prices, the country remains a comparatively expensive jurisdiction in which to develop an LNG project due to its extensive regulatory process that can add years to project timelines. But he added he is encouraged by recent efforts by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to speed permitting times for energy projects.

Bedi also did not rule out an expansion of the Woodfibre project in years to come, but said its backers are not yet at that point.

“Market demand is very exciting. Government support is very exciting. But we are at that very critical juncture of our project where we need to bring it to the finish line,” he said.

Technological Development for Cleaner and Greener Environment Hydrogen & Bio-Methane

LANXESS Replaces Natural Gas With Hydrogen at Pigment Plant

LANXESS is advancing the decarbonization of its iron oxide pigment production at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site in Germany by replacing natural gas with hydrogen as a fuel for drying pigments. The specialty chemicals producer has installed a hydrogen burner at its spray dryer, making the facility one of Germany’s first large-scale industrial plants to operate continuously with hydrogen as a fuel.

The switch is expected to reduce LANXESS’s carbon emissions by approximately 6,000 metric tons per year. The initiative supports the company’s broader efforts to lower the carbon intensity of its manufacturing operations while demonstrating that hydrogen can be integrated into established industrial processes on a commercial scale.

The hydrogen used at the facility is generated through chlorine electrolysis at the neighboring Covestro plant. It is transported directly to LANXESS through a dedicated pipeline, allowing the company to access a local hydrogen supply without requiring long-distance transportation. The close integration between the two facilities is a major factor behind the project’s implementation.

LANXESS installed the hydrogen burner in late 2025 and progressively brought the system into operation. The equipment has been designed to run entirely on hydrogen and includes a dedicated hydrogen pipeline, a modified burner, upgraded measurement and control technology, and additional safety systems. The technological conversion replaces the previous natural gas-based drying process with a lower-greenhouse-gas alternative.

The project also highlights the benefits of the Verbund production model at Krefeld-Uerdingen. Shared infrastructure, short pipeline connections, established safety procedures, and close cooperation between industrial partners allow hydrogen to be supplied reliably to the pigment production facility.

LANXESS and Covestro have maintained a long-standing production partnership at the site. Covestro supplies nitrobenzene, which LANXESS uses as a raw material in iron oxide pigment manufacturing. Aniline generated as a byproduct is subsequently returned to Covestro, where it serves as an important feedstock for plastics production. The hydrogen project further strengthens this integrated production network by creating an additional pathway for resource-efficient and lower-carbon manufacturing.

LANXESS’s Inorganic Pigments business is among the world’s leading producers of iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments. Its products serve construction, paints and coatings, plastics, and specialty applications. The Krefeld-Uerdingen site is the company’s largest iron oxide pigment production facility globally and has manufactured these pigments for around 100 years.

The company also benefits from the Laux process, which provides efficient energy use and generates virtually no waste compared with alternative production methods. Combining this process with hydrogen-based drying could further improve the environmental performance of LANXESS’s iron oxide pigment portfolio.

Impact on Product & Chemical Commodity Prices

LANXESS’s hydrogen conversion should have a positive impact on the sustainability profile of iron oxide pigments, potentially strengthening demand from construction, coatings, plastics, and other customers seeking lower-carbon materials. However, the immediate effect on pigment prices is likely limited because the project affects one production facility and primarily changes its fuel source. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, hydrogen demand could receive a modest structural boost, particularly in industrial applications, while natural gas demand at the site should decline marginally. Lower fossil-fuel consumption could reduce exposure to gas price volatility. Overall, the move is more likely to influence long-term production economics and carbon premiums than trigger immediate commodity price changes.

Dutch Project Produces First Green Hydrogen On North Sea Gas Platform

An innovative pilot project in the Netherlands – focused on energy transition solutions – has reached a milestone moment of producing its first batch of green hydrogen on an active natural gas platform in the North Sea. The project – PosHYdon – led by a consortium of partners with support of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy is the first initiative in the world to combine offshore wind power, green hydrogen production and natural gas extraction at sea.

The project’s first batch of green hydrogen was successfully produced in late July, at the Q13a-A platform operated by Eni Energy Netherlands, located approximately 13 kilometers off the coast of Scheveningen district in The Hague.

According to a spokesperson, it is the first “fully electrified production platform” in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Onsite, seawater is converted into demineralized water that’s subsequently transformed into hydrogen through electrolysis.

The electricity required for this process is supplied by offshore wind energy. All the while, simultaneous production of natural gas continues. Alongside the platform’s operator Eni, other project partners include DEME Group, EBN, Eneco, Emerson, Gasunie, Hatenboerwater, Investa Expertise Centrum, Iv, Nel, Nexstep, NGT, Nogat, TAQA and TNO.

A Watershed Moment For Green Hydrogen

Lex de Groot, managing director, Eni Energy Netherlands, said: “It is remarkable to see that, together with all these public and private partners, we have been able to achieve a world first through PosHYdon.

“The reuse of existing offshore platforms for sustainable applications is now becoming a tangible reality. Together, we are taking a meaningful step towards a future offshore energy system in the North Sea.”

Forbes Daily: Join over 1 million Forbes Daily subscribers and get our best stories, exclusive reporting and essential analysis of the day’s news in your inbox every weekday.

Rene Peters, business director, energy infrastructure, TNO, called the project an important step in scaling up offshore hydrogen production based on offshore wind energy.

“We believe, the pilot offers the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and practical experience that are essential for the further development of large-scale offshore hydrogen production. This helps to reduce risks and control costs more effectively.”

Nathan Pettus, president of process systems and solutions business, Emerson, described the recent production of green hydrogen at sea by PosHYdon as “a watershed moment” for global energy transition solutions.

“When we began this journey in 2022 with our project partners, we knew it would be quite the feat to combine offshore wind power, hydrogen production and natural gas production at sea. Today, that integrated vision has become a reality.”

Pettus also flagged Emerson’s automation and control technologies that helped make PosHYdon’s milestone possible, managing the complex integration of desalination, electrolysis and gas blending processes with precision and safety.

“This project validates what we’ve long believed: that advanced digital solutions are essential to accelerating the hydrogen economy. As we look ahead, the success of PosHYdon opens unprecedented possibilities.”

The Next Stage

The excitement of having achieved the project’s first green hydrogen production is palpable along with the recognition of its next critical stage.

While PosHYdon’s backers continue to gain practical experience with integrating multiple energy systems offshore and producing hydrogen in a marine environment, project research and modelling is also focused on costs, maintenance requirements, and operational performance of offshore hydrogen installations.

Additionally, during the latest test phase, green hydrogen will be produced initially with the objective of achieving stable system operations and the extent to which the system can respond to fluctuations in offshore wind power generation.

A spokesperson said the entire operational approach has been carefully assessed for safety and environmental impact, enabling the collection of valuable practical data.

The key findings from the pilot are expected to be analyzed and compiled in August and September. The results will be shared with the hydrogen sector and Stientje van Veldhoven-van der Meer, minister of climate and green growth, The Netherlands.

Those results will help determine the next steps toward scaling up offshore green hydrogen production in Europe, and beyond.

Bulk of hydrogen currently produced around the world is gray hydrogen made from natural gas through a process known as steam methane reforming. Next comes blue hydrogen, a lower carbon version still made using SMR but with carbon capture and storage, and finally there is green hydrogen generated through electrolysis of water using renewable power quite like the PosHYdon project.

However, despite rising green investments, blue and green hydrogen currently account for less than 1% of global production, according to the International Energy Agency. This will need to change for hydrogen to play a meaningful role in a future net zero economy.

China cements global lead in hydro-gen energy development

China is leading the global hydrogen energy market in both production and consumption, with its renewable hydrogen capacity now accounting for over 50 percent of the world’s total, according to a newly released industry report. The China Hydrogen Energy Development Report (2026), recently released by the National Energy Administration, shows that the country’s full hydrogen value chain spanning production, storage, transportation and application – experienced explosive growth in 2025.

Operational renewable hydrogen capacity surpassed 250,000 metric tons per year, more than doubling from the previous year.

Infrastructure development is actively keeping pace with production. By June 2026, China had established approximately 620 hydrogen refueling stations and put over 350 kilomet-ers of pure hydrogen pipelines into operation.

The report noted that independent technological and equipment breakthroughs across multiple segments, coupled with accelerated development pathways for green ammonia and green methanol, are pushing the sector’s global influence to new heights.

Driven by its massive market scale, China has emerged as the world’s fastest “testing ground” for hydrogen technology iteration.

The large-scale commercial operation of fuel cell vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks and public buses, has generated vast amounts of real-world operational data, according to the China Hydrogen Alliance.

This rapid feedback loop ensures that domestic manufacturers can quickly adapt and upgrade their systems, accelerating continuous technological optimization, it said.

According to the alliance, China’s hydrogen production capacity and output grew steadily during the 14th Five-year Plan period (2021-25), with both production and consumption consistently ranking first globally.

Bian Guangqi, deputy directorgeneral of the NEA’S science and technology department, said previously that “the 15th Five-year Plan period (2026-30) is a key point for the hydro-gen industry to transition from being policy-driven to market-driven”.

Currently holding more than half of the world’s electrolyzer and fuel cell system manufac-turing capacities, China is serving as a powerful incubator for both domestic hydrogen champions

The 15th Five-year Plan period (202630) is a key point for the hydrogen industry to trans-ition from being policy-driven to market-driven.” to Bian Guangqi, deputy director-general of the NEA’S science and technology department and multinational giants, which are actively leveraging the country’s robust supply chain advantages with many establishing localized research and development centers drive down manufacturing costs, accelerate technology iteration and scale up innovations. Lou Yimin, senior vice-president and chief product officer at Envision Energy, said, “The toplevel design is meant to direct long-term, stable investments or patient capital, toward strategic future objectives, while simultaneously unlocking market opportunities for sec-tors primed for mass commercialization.”

The first phase (320,000 tons capacity) of Envision Group’s 1.52 million-ton hydrogen-ammonia project, the largest facility of its kind in the world, in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, was commissioned in July last year, demonstrating that producing green ammonia from renewable power is economically viable and commercially feasible.

Looking at the 15th Five-year Plan period, the country aims to achieve major break-throughs in industrial scale and commercial application scenarios.

The report projects that annual green hydrogen demand will range between 2.4 million and 4.3 million tons during this period, with the total output value of the entire industrial chain expected to exceed 1 trillion yuan ($148.2 billion).

During the next five years, hydrogen will be deeply integrated into the nation’s broader economic and social development, creating massive scale effects in areas such as indus-trial decarbonization and the green transition of the transportation sector, it said.

Priority will be given to the comprehensive regional development of hydrogen, smoothly connecting various storage and transport infrastructures, and embedding the chemical deeply into the country’s new energy system, said the report.
