Spanish Port of Motril has supplied 2,700 tons of LNG to Baleària ferries
The arrival of Baleària shipping company to the Spanish port of Motril, last April, meant the introduction of LNG for the operation of its ships, until July in the Hypatia de Alejandría, and later the Bahama Mama. Since then, a total of 54 bunkering operations have been carried out, involving the supply of 2,740 tons of LNG through 141 trucks from ESK.
For the bunkering operations, both the port and Baleària had to develop a series of protocols and obtain different licenses related to the use of LNG to supply the ferry that makes the crossing with Melilla three times a week.
Motril, along with the ports of Algeciras, Almería, Barcelona, Bilbao, Denia, Ferrol, Gijón, Huelva, Málaga, Tenerife and Valencia, is one of the few in Spain that offers LNG bunkering, “the most revolutionary and innovative that exists in the shipping industry worldwide,” said the President of the Port Authority, José García Fuentes, adding: “The Port of Motril continues to work to reduce the carbon footprint of its industrial activity.”
Spanish ports hosted a total of 705 LNG bunkering operations through July, according to Gasnam data. This represents an increase of 84% compared to the 384 operations completed in the same period last year.
