Sept 2 strike may interrupt PNG supply

Around 3,200 households using Pipe Natural Gas (PNG) providing by the Gail Gas Ltd can face interrupted supply on September 2 as the contractual workers will go on a strike called by the central trade union. GAIL Gas also supplies PNG to 12 industrial and seven commercial units in the city.

GAIL’s three Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations in 6the city will also remain closed on Wednesday. A number of contractual workers are working at the three CNG filling stations of GAIL Gas situated at Lohia Nagar, Shatabdi Nagar and Vedvyaspuri.

A central trade union has called a strike on September 2, accusing the central government of amending labour laws to empower employers with unfettered right to “hire and fire” and stripping workers and trade unions of all their rights and benefits.

During a convention held on May 26, the central trade union has called upon all the trade unions and federations across the sectors to go on an all India general strike on September 2.

Meanwhile, chief manager of GAIL Gas Vinod Kumar Arora asked the SSP to provide security at the GAIL Gas establishments in city. He said GAIL Gas operations are crucial to the lifeline of the city, including supply of CNG to public transport vehicles and PNG to domestic households. With contractual workers joining the strike, these services may be disturbed. He said the management wants to ensure that willing employees are allowed free entry into the installations so the requisite force must be deployed at the filling stations.
