Renewable Natural Gas Fuel Sales Rise in Finland

Finnish natural gas retailer Gasum reports that despite the consumption of gas decreasing by 10% in 2015, caused by the exceptionally warm weather seen throughout the year and the reduced use of gas in combined heat and power (CHP) production, the consumption of biogas increased by up to 155% and totaled 40.8 GWh. In transport, biogas used to fill up road vehicles accounted for around 40% of the gas sales of public filling stations.

A total of 75.6 GWh (2014: 34 GWh) of biogas was injected into the Finnish network from Mäkikylä, Kouvola, the Suomenoja wastewater treatment plant in Espoo, and Kujala, Lahti. Capacity for biogas injection into the gas network will be further increased in 2016 as a new biogas plant is under construction at the Ekokem Circular Economy Village in Riihimäki. Gasum and Taaleritehdas have also agreed on the sale of the biogas plant company Biotehdas, following which Gasum will begin to produce biogas around Finland in Huittinen, Honkajoki, Kuopio, Riihimäki and Oulu.
