Petronetlooks to LNG-Powered Vessels for Demand Growth
Petronet LNG Ltd (Petronet LNG) expects liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels to help increase demand for the fuel in India, Reuters reports.
ShriPrabhat Singh, Petronet LNG’s Managing Director and CEO, says he anticipates a shift to LNG-driven vehicles, including trucks and ships, to generate “reasonable demand” for LNG in the country.
As Ship & Bunker reported last year, in an effort to reduce carbon emissions without additional operating costs, India’s government gave approval to a plan that will see vessels operating in the country’s inland waterways switch from diesel to LNG bunkers.
In June, India‘s Ministry of Shipping announced that the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Petronet LNG would work together to develop the operation of LNG barges on Ganga, National Waterway-1, by the end of 2018.
