North Dhaka braces for 9hr gas outage
The gas supply will off from 6am to 3pm
Parts of northern Dhaka will suffer a gas supply haltage and low gas pressure from 6am to 3pm on Monday, due to replacement of gas pipelines in the Dhaka Cantonment area.
Gas supply to all industrial units and CNG refilling stations that fall between Joydebpur Chowrasta and Banani rail crossing will remain suspended, says a press release of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL).
Gas supply will be at very low pressure in the residential and commercial areas that fall between Uttara, Joar Sahara, and Baridhara DOHS during this time, the media release adds.
According to Titas, the concerned authorities will shift gas pipelines to facilitate construction work of an underpass project near Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College in Dhaka Cantonment.
Md Kamruzzaman Khan, director (operations) of TGTDCL, said the task of gas pipeline shifting is time-consuming.
“We need to suspend gas supply while shifting pipelines. We will try to resume the supply of gas as soon as the work is completed,” he said.
Gas outage and low pressure are two major and common problems that city dwellers face very often, with the crisis deepening further every winter. The consumers also face problems due to installation and replacement of gas pipelines on a regular basis, mainly owing to lack of coordination between all the utility agencies.
The TGTDCL is already facing a shortfall of at least 300mmcfd against a demand of around 2,200mmcfd. In the Dhaka metropolitan area alone, demand is around 1,700mmcfd.
With 2,783,134 consumers, including 44 power plants, 1,630 captive power producers, and 5,128 industrial units, the TGTDCL supplies gas in eight categories to the Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
The number of Titas household users is 2,764,247 while the number of commercial users stands at 11,688.
