More ‘eco’ vehicles for cleaning in 43 cities in the Community of Madrid

ACCIONA (specialist in sustainable infrastructure solutions and renewable energy projects) and Canal de Isabel II (public company in charge of the integral water cycle in the Community of Madrid) have put into operation a fleet of four CNG trucks destined for maintenance of network sanitation and sewer cleaning of 43 municipalities in the Community of Madrid, including the capital city. The initiative will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 60 tons of CO2 per year.

Two vehicles are being incorporated in the city of Madrid: an 18-ton impeller-aspirator mixed truck with 9m3 of water capacity, and an 18-ton construction crane truck for the distribution of materials. The other two units, two tanker trucks of 18 and 26 tons with capacities of 9 m3 and 13 m3 respectively, will provide services in several cities of Sierra Norte de Madrid. The ECO-labeled vehicles also have a water recycling system to minimize the water footprint of their operations.

The new fleet will help make the maintenance tasks of the sanitation network (entrusted to ACCIONA by Canal de Isabel II) more efficient. In the city of Madrid, these services include the maintenance of 678 km of tubular collectors and 477 km of sewer network sanitation galleries, while in 42 municipalities of Sierra Norte they will clean the sanitation network of 454 km of municipal networks and 96 km of network that carry the waters through the outfalls to the treatment plants.

The implementation of these sustainable vehicles is part of the Decarbonization Plan promoted by ACCIONA to reduce their emissions by 60% until 2030 and achieve total decarbonization by 2050, which includes the transition to sustainable management of the integral water cycle in urban settings.

Moreover, with the use of these trucks, Canal de Isabel II is promoting the systematic incorporation of the best available technologies in their operations (in this case, the management of urban drainage networks) to offer not only an optimal service, but also ecological and which makes the least impact on the environment.
