Mexico: natural gas for vehicles can cut 70% of environmental pollution
According to the Mexican Natural Gas Association (AMGN), the use of natural gas in transportation could reduce environmental pollution by 70%. This fuel does not emit solid particles during its combustion and diminishes the emission of carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, reason why it is environmentally friendly and contributes to improving health quality in great population centers. The AMGN stated it is ready to collaborate with the government in its three levels for the implementation of measures and programs that reduce the polluting emissions through the use of CNG.
Through a press release, the AMGN explained that, since motor vehicles are one of the main sources of pollution in urban areas, the use of CNG represents an important opportunity for fleet operators, companies, governments and society, thus counteracting the main cause of the ozone layer. “Thanks to its environmental benefits, NGVs can obtain a ‘0’ vehicle verification hologram, which exempts them from the ‘Hoy No Circula’ Program,” they reported.
It is worth recalling that after seven consecutive days of high concentrations of airborne particles (main indicator of urban pollution), the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) decreed environmental contingencies in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico. Faced with this problem, the AMGN reiterated that CNG is the most efficient alternative fuel. They also called on the authorities to promote the use of NGVs to improve air quality.
Regarding the economic advantages, they explained that CNG achieves savings of more than 50% compared to Magna gasoline and more than 25% compared to LPG. That is, a taxi converted to natural gas could generate annual savings of more than 40,000 pesos (US$ 2,200). In terms of transit buses, there are factory-build CNG units, which, in addition to being environmentally friendly, emit less noise and offer passengers more comfort.
