Mexico: city of Neza switches to CNG municipal vehicles to cut emissions
In order to face the critical environmental situation in the Valley of Mexico, the municipal president of Nezahualcoyotl, Juan Hugo de la Rosa Garcia, announced a series of permanent measures that will be applied in the city. These actions include the replacement of 32,000 luminaries, the creation of urban forests, the planting of more than 40,000 trees, the gradual renewal of the garbage truck fleet and the transition from gasoline to natural gas in all official vehicles.
At a press conference, the mayor said that in a responsible way the conversion of the 607 official vehicles -such as patrols, medical and administrative services- to natural gas will allow the immediate reduction of 95% of the smog emissions, 99% of carcinogenic particles, 85% of carbon monoxide and 30% of greenhouse gases that these vehicles generate during their operational life.
De la Rosa García also pointed out that along with government and citizenship, the industry should also assume responsibility as it occupies the second place in the contribution of emissions to the atmosphere. In this regard, the government will work hand in hand with entrepreneurs and micro entrepreneurs to invite them and support them to voluntarily submit their Annual Operation Certificate, which collects their emissions into the air, water and subsoil.
Finally, he said that the environment is a topic that should be addressed in a metropolitan agenda, so the federal, state and local governments must assume joint challenges and responsibilities, and called scientists, teachers, social leaders, citizens and political parties to join the contribution of proposals and immediate solutions, which allow reducing pollution rates and ensure the health of Mexicans.
