Mexico: Chihuahua launches new green bus fleet with 25 NGVs

The governor of the state of Chihuhua Javier Corral Jurado led the ceremony to launch the new environmentally-friendly public transport Bowí, which involves the incorporation of 25 natural gas buses to the Main Route in a first phase, with an investment of 84,446,260 pesos. This route is expected to reach a total of 60 buses of this type, including 35 that will begin to be acquired this year.

In the event held in the courtyard of the Transport Operator, located in Carlos Pacheco Lateral, Corral Jurado stated: “It is a very special day for the launch of the ‘Bowí’ (which means ‘road’ in a Mexican indigenous language) buses, to attend the commitment to improve transport. That is why we are making investments and they will come more in public transport.”

He explained that this new Bowí system responds to the objective of having a decent and quality transport for the inhabitants of Chihuahua and that with these vehicles a clean energy-based public transport will be implemented for the first time in the state, allowing to save 481.25 tons of CO2 for the first 10 years.

The head of the Executive also indicated that the Government has a CNG conversion system, in order to encourage transport carriers to do the transition from gasoline or diesel to this alternative fuel.

Moreover, the General Secretary of the Government Luis Fernando Mesta Soulé said that it is a milestone which will help fulfil the goals of reducing fuel consumption, polluting gases, and time of transfer.

Of the 25 vehicles that started operations, 10 units have manual transmission and the other 15 have automatic transmission, and can accommodate 33 and 37 seated people, respectively. In hours of increased traffic, each bus can transport up to 90 people in total.

This is an extremely positive moment for natural gas and the transition to a Mexican greener public transport. In this encouraging scenario for the country’s sustainable mobility, AltFuels Mexico 2020 will take place on 27-30 April 2020 at the World Trade Center of Mexico City. The event will consist of high-level conferences and exhibition led by national and international experts and companies who will share their experiences and knowledge with visitors and showcase the latest in clean energy technologies.
