Mexibús BRT system debuts its first compressed natural gas vehicle

Transcomunicador, the operator of Mexibús (BRT system that runs in the State of Mexico and Mexico City), shows its commitment to sustainability to minimize the environmental impact of the service and take care of its users by adding the first CNG bus to the system’s fleet. Mexibús operates in the municipalities of Ecatepec, Coacalco, Tultitlán and Cuautitlán Izcalli, transports more than 200,000 people per day, and travels about 23,000 km per day. The official launch took place in the State of Mexico.

The incorporation is an articulated Scania K320 bus powered by natural gas, with Busscar bodywork, which will greatly minimize the environmental impact thanks to its compliance with the Euro VI standard. In the last five years, the transportation sector accounted for 32% of Mexico’s greenhouse gas and compound emissions and, of that percentage, 92% came from public transportation.

The new CNG bus contributes to the reduction of polluting emissions that cause the greenhouse effect and accelerate global warming in the following percentages: -91.4% of carbon monoxide, -99.9% of non-methane hydrocarbons, -62.3% of nitrogen oxides causing acid rain, -75% particulate matter causing respiratory diseases, -84% ammonia and -82% methane. Additionally, this vehicle can reduce operating noise up to five times compared to a Euro V diesel unit.

The launch was attended by Juan José Sánchez Peláez, President of Transcomunicador Mexiquense, and Adolfo Elim Luviano Heredia, General Director of the Mass Transportation System and Cable Car of the State of Mexico, who commented that they were happy “to introduce this technology to the State of Mexico, as it is the company’s first natural gas vehicle and therefore it is ecologically sustainable.”

“We will always speak out in favor of the benefit of our users and it is not only a matter of having active buses, but also of doing our part to contribute to this great city to which we belong. Therefore, a lower environmental impact and a lower impact on the health of the population are also part of offering well-being,” they added.
