Madrid in Spain will open six new natural gas refueling stations this year

The Spanish capital plans to have a network of twelve CNG stations this year, all facilities with public access, homogeneously distributed throughout the urban area, close to areas of demand and accessible from major access routes to the city.

Six of these filling stations are already in operation and the other six will be implemented thanks to a grant for installing and operating natural gas stations that Madrid has recently announced, whose ultimate goal is to improve air quality in the city.

In recent years Madrid has developed a public access refueling network offering alternative vehicle fuels, which shows the effort and commitment to promote cleaner and lower environmental impact technologies. In the current legislature, infrastructure has passed from two to six CNG public stations.

Moreover, the administration has launched actions to increase the presence of less polluting vehicles circulating in the city, in private vehicles and fleets. Today the municipal fleet has more than 1,250 heavy duty vehicles powered by CNG: 793 city buses, 459 refuse trucks and 19 towing vehicles. And thanks to the support provided to the taxi industry, the percentage of green fleet represents 29% of the total, compared with 12.51% in 2011.
