Madrid encourages use of alternative fuels in municipal fleet

Madrid City Council has allocated 279,000 euros for grants in the taxi sector for the purchase of vehicles

incorporating cleaner fuels and technologies. This aid, included in the 2015-2017 Strategic Plan of

Grants, has increased its amount, which initially was fixed at 100,000 euros, and aims to improve the

service conditions of the cabs and its environmental features included in the 2015-2019 Government

Operational Program of the Department of Environment and Mobility.

Grants will be of 3,000 and 1,000 euros per vehicle. 3,000 euros will be allocated for the purchase of

eurotaxis with equal or less emissions than 160 gr. CO2/km and 80 mg. NOx/km. belonging to the

following categories: hybrid, plug-in hybrids and extended range electric vehicles, and vehicles powered

by engines that can use alternative fuels such as CNG. For other vehicles with the same characteristics,

which are not eurotaxis, aid will be 1,000 euros.

The Department of Environment and Mobility made a firm commitment to cleaner technologies and

alternative fuels for the fleet of municipal vehicles. The main axes of this action are the use of natural

gas in heavy vehicles (trucks and buses). Of all council vehicles, 2,011 are “green”: 1,209 CNG vehicles,

555 Euro V or higher diesel vehicles, 113 hybrids, 86 LPG vehicles, 33 EVs and 15 bioethanol vehicles.

During this year, the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will incorporate 200 new low-emission buses

to its fleet, including 170 powered by CNG. In addition, the cleaning and waste collection service will

begin renewing its fleet this year, adding 109 new natural gas trucks in October.
