Las Vegas Transit Adds 55 CNG Buses
New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of Canadian bus manufacturer New Flyer Industries Inc. (New
Flyer), is to supply Regional Transportation Commission of Las Vegas (RTC) in Southern Nevada 55
40-foot and 60-foot compressed natural gas (CNG) Xcelsior® buses under options exercised as part
of a March 2015 contract.
RTC is both the transit authority and the transportation-planning agency for Southern Nevada and
specifically Las Vegas. Its mandate includes identification of transportation challenges and
implementation of short and long-term resolutions, while simultaneously promoting sustainability,
air quality improvement, enhanced mobility and increased quality of life in the region.
Specifically, RTC will exercise options for 30 Xcelsior CNG 40-foot buses and 25 60-foot CNG Xcelsior
buses.
In July last year, RTC was recognized by the Las Vegas Business Press for its green initiatives in the
public agency category. Presented with the “Green Award,” the RTC took home the trophy for its
continued commitment to creating a “quicker, cleaner, greener” Southern Nevada by transitioning
its entire fleet to more compressed natural gas (CNG) transit vehicles. That meant committing to
purchasing up to 305 CNG vehicles by 2022. At the time RTC stated that transitioning its entire
transit fleet to CNG, including its Paratransit vehicles, will have both significant environmental and
economic benefits. Operating at one-third the cost of a diesel-powered vehicle, CNG vehicles cost
approximately 65 cents per mile to operate versus $1.50 per mile.
