JERA TO DEVELOP THREE LNG, COAL BASED POWER PLANTS IN JAPAN

Japan’s Jera on September 14 said it has proposed to develop 5.6 GW of power generation capacity for the fiscal year 2016-2017 (Apr-Mar). The company has submitted Electricity Supply Plan 1 to the industry ministry.

The company said 4.29 GW of generation capacity would be LNG based and 1.3 GW would be coal based. The power generation capacity included in the plan comprises replacement of ageing thermal power plants now owned by Tepco. Jera, a joint venture between Tepco and Chubu Electric Power, is one of the biggest LNG importers in the world.

Goi plant, which is expected to be operational in FY2021-2022 and FY 2022-2023, will be LNG based with capacity of 2.34 GW comprising three units of 780 MW each. The Anegasaki plant will also be LNG based and will have a capacity of 1.95 GW comprising three units of about 650 MW each. The plant will come online in FY2021-2022 and FY 2022-2023. The Yokosuka plant will be a coal fired with capacity of 1.3 GW comprising of two units of 650 MW each. This plant will become operational in FY2022-2023.

Jera said it wants to mitigate the environmental burden by using state-of-the-art high-efficiency equipment in each thermal power plant. The company wants to develop a balanced portfolio of coal-fired and LNG-fired thermal power plants.
