GAIL pipe-laying work resumes in Kozhikode

Work to be completed by March 2019 The Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has resumed pipe-laying works, which remained interrupted in some parts of Kozhikode district following the floods and rain-related calamities. Officials said the works, now in progress in Nochad and Cheruvannur panchayats, could be completed by March 2019 with the protests from landowners declining. On the basis of the local action councils’ demands, new alignments were considered and approved in some of the thickly populated areas ahead of resuming the works. In Perambra Assembly constituency, a new alignment was considered to address concerns of farmers in and around the Avalapandy kole land area. GAIL Project Manager M. Viju said around 70% of the total work, including pipe laying and welding, was completed in Kozhikode district. The highest amount of compensation, ₹59 crore, was disbursed to the landowners in Kozhikode to facilitate speedy execution of work, he told The Hindu. “We are not facing any major opposition from local action committees as most of their demands have been met. They have been extended a very reasonable compensation,” he said.
