State-run GAIL (India) on Tuesday awarded contract for the natural gas pipeline laying work for the 105-km stretch on the Kochi–Kuttanad–Mangaluru pipeline, and the work is expected to be completed by December 2018. This portion of the pipeline will run on the Perole-Kodalamuguru-Mangaluru section.

The company in September 2016 had awarded the 91-km contract for the Kochi–Koottanad section, and GAIL chairman and managing director B C Tripathi in a release said the work on the stretch has been progressing smoothly and the company is expecting that the pipeline will be ready within the extended time frame given by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas. The total length of the Kochi-Mangaluru pipeline is 440 km.

The pipeline was to be initially completed by March 2013 which was first relaxed till June 2015 and then February 2019 as the project was facing land acquisition problems in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The company, in the release, however, said the project has made progress with the support of the Kerala government and other state agencies.
