Cummins plans to set up largest R&D unit in Pune

Cummins, the global diesel engine designing and manufacturing giant, is developing India as a global engineering hub for undertaking research and development for Cummins worldwide. The American company is establishing its largest research and development centre called the Cummins Technical Centre India in Kothrud area in Pune with over Rs 1,000 crore investment.

“It is the largest research and development centre for Cummins globally which will provide engineering services as well as the business specific development capabilities and global solutions to all of Cummins businesses,” Anant J Talaulicar, chairman and MD at Cummins India told Financial Chronicle.

The $19.2 billion company designs, manufactures, distributes and services diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems.

“The Cummins Technical Centre India will be fully operationalised in June-July 2016,” Talaulicar said, adding that it would be equipped with more than 36 engineering testing laboratories. This new centre would be linked online to support company’s other research and development centres in America, England, Germany, France, China, and Brazil.

“Employing a total of 2,500 top talent pool of engineers, about 75-80 per cent of the technology work will be done for the company’s global businesses from the centre,” Talaulicar said, this centre would be linked other research and technical centres.
