Colombia: CNG buses launched for TransMilenio BRT in Bogota
A batch of buses, the first natural gas vehicles in the TransMilenio system, was presented in the
Colombian capital as part of efforts to reduce environmental pollution. The Scania buses, which are
supplied by the multinational Gas Natural Fenosa, will begin commercial service in July.
“These are new solutions for public transportation in Bogotá through the use of clean energy with Euro
VI technology, the most advanced in the world and which will help reduce urban pollution,” according to
Gas Natural Fenosa.
In Bogota there are about 9,000 buses running on diesel and, with the commissioning of new vehicles,
the Government seeks to reduce environmental pollution and cut operational costs of the TransMilenio
Mass Transportation System since CNG is more economical than other energy sources.
Colombia is the third Latin American country with the largest number of vehicles whose operation has
been converted to natural gas, with 543,000 units. Bogota has 168 natural gas stations, of which 66 are
operated by Gas Natural Fenosa, while the country has a total of 749 refueling points.
