City of Mexico approves taxi conversion to natural gas
The Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) will allow taxis in Mexico City to be converted from gasoline to natural gas, said Secretary Hector Serrano. The government’s agency designs a program so that those taxis that have a minimum of five years of useful life, that is 2012 and higher models, can be converted to CNG technology, since it is cheaper and less polluting.
“There are many leaders, representatives of taxi drivers, who say that they see an alternative in the transition, it is not expensive, the CNG kit installation fluctuates between 25,000 and 30,000 pesos, and obviously it generates more profits since the operation costs are much cheaper,” Serrano said.
The official said that Semovi is developing a program to finance taxi drivers who want to convert their vehicles. “We will agree that taxis that should be converted within five years, can do it now with a government program, that is, 2012 models that do not have to be converted yet, can switch to natural gas and receive an incentive from the government,” he added.
Ignacio Rodríguez, spokesman for the National Taxi Movement, said the conversion to CNG brings two types of benefits: fighting environmental pollution and reducing operating costs, newspaper Excelsior reported.
This highly favorable scenario with a growing marketplace and venue for the natural gas sector will host Altfuels Mexico 2018 taking place on 23-26 April at the World Trade Center of Mexico City.
