Biomethane car achieves key milestone in Brazil-Uruguay trip
This week, two researchers arrived in Uruguay as part of the “Montenegro-Montevidéu Challenge”, a multidisciplinary project coordinated by FabrizzioCedraz, president of the Brazilian Surear Institute, and Dr. Alexandre Wentz, a bioenergy professional from the Faculty of Technology and Sciences (FTC) in Brazil, and with the financial support of the Gas Company of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (SULGÁS) of Brazil. The trip involved a journey of 856 kilometers, starting from the city of Montenegro, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. There, the vehicle was supplied with biomethane produced in the pilot plant located next to the Composting and Biogas Plant of Ecocitrus (fruit), and then arrived in the Uruguayan capital. The journey between the two cities has been the largest of its kind in the world. This will set a record for a biomethane-powered vehicle, with the world’s highest performance and autonomy. It implies reaching landmarks of more than 25 km/m³ and only two liters of hydrated ethanol. This project, in addition to bringing Brazil closer to other Latin American countries, also aims to stimulate demand for the use of biomethane. In turn, the researchers’ visit will allow the Uruguayan project Biovalor – a project of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), the Ministry of Housing, Territorial Planning and Environment (MVOTMA) and the Ministry of Livestock Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), with funding from the Global Environment Facility and public and private organizations – to deepen the use of biomethane as a transportation fuel. The exploration of these types of projects opens possibilities for the country, taking into account the technological requirements and their associated costs, as well as the benefits and barriers for its development.
