Belgium: Engie will provide LNG bunkering service at Port of Antwerp
Port of Antwerp has named France-based energy and shipping giant Engie the winning bidder to build
and operate an LNG-bunkering station for barges under a 30-year concession to start in October.
The bunkering station will make LNG as marine fuel “permanently available” at the port. Antwerp Port
Authority said in a statement: “Engie LNG Solutions will use a site at Quay 526-528 for this purpose. The
concession starts on 1 October and runs for a period of 30 years.”
Antwerp follows Rotterdam and Zeebrugge to become the latest major northwest Europe commercial
port to tackle the continent’s shortage of LNG-supply infrastructure.
Zeebrugge will be home port to Europe’s first multi-user LNG bunker-supply ship, due to come into
service later this year, supplying fuel to ships trading across the North Sea and into the Baltic. Belgium-
based Fluxys will co-own the 5,100m³ vessel with Engie, Mitsubishi and NYK Line.
And Rotterdam’s Gate LNG terminal is building a dedicated breakbulk terminal at Maasvlakte to open
this year that will supply gas to deepsea and river-going ships, as well as to trucks. The launch customer
is Shell, which will also station a 6,500m³ LNG bunker-supply ship at Rotterdam from next year.
