Area's first compressed natural gas station opens

American Natural Gas LLC has opened a public compressed natural gas station in Gates, the Saratoga

Springs-based distributor of alternative motor fuels announced this week.

The facility is at the intersection of I-390 and Chili Avenue. It is the first public CNG station in the

Rochester region.

“We continue to hear and respond to the increasing need for alternative fuel infrastructure,” ANG

CEO Drew West said. “The more stations we have, the more realistic it is for businesses to convert

and fulfill their environmental impact aspirations.”

Natural gas is produced both worldwide and domestically at relatively low cost, so overall costs to

operate heavy-duty trucks on CNG are significantly less than running the same trucks on gasoline or

diesel fuel.

CNG is the cleanest burning transportation fuel commercially available. Natural gas vehicles show an

average reduction in ozone-forming emissions of 80 percent compared to gasoline vehicles, experts

say.

“The opening of the ANG station in Rochester is a significant event,” Genesee Region Clean Cities

Coordinator David Keefe said. “As the first public CNG station in our region, it will accelerate the

development of CNG fleets in our area. We have been waiting for this for a long time and we are

pleased that ANG has brought this project to our community.”

The three-lane station is a fast-fuel station, designed to accommodate high-capacity, large volume

users. ANG has stations across the country, including one in Saratoga Springs and three near Buffalo.
