Another CNG DEMU Hits the Rails in India

Indian Railways Organisation for Alternate Fuels (IROAF) has followed up the launch of Compressed Natural Gas dual-fuel rakes (a coupled group of coaches) in January this year with another CNG DEMU rake that will operate between Shamli and Delhi. This service has been inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways Shri Manoj Sinha on 7th July 2015 at Shamli station.

These CNG DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) rakes will achieve diesel substitution of 20% with CNG and have less harmful emissions and thus contribute to a better environment.

The first CNG DEMU power car, launched in September 2014, was equipped with a driver’s cabin, engine room, radiator room and passenger compartment, like any other power car, but with the addition of a 40-cylinder CNG cascade room at the rear. Each cylinder had capacity to store 15 kg of CNG at 255 bar pressure. It is in service between Rohtak- Rewari section, in northern India.
