138 CNG New Flyer Buses Ordered for New York City Transit
New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc. (New Flyer) — a North American
manufacturer of buses, has been awarded a contract by New York City Transit Authority (NYCT) to
supply 138 heavy-duty 40-foot Xcelsior® compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. The contract is a firm
order and is valued at approximately USD 78 million.
Under the terms of the RFP: Delivery of Production Buses must begin no later than April 2017 and be
completed no later than October 2017; and these dedicated CNG buses shall have engines designed to
provide not less than 300,000 miles or 40,000 hrs. of NYCT service between overhauls. The 40-foot
Xcelsior is powered by a Cummins ISL-G 280 (CNG) engine, rated at 900 lb-ft (1220 Nm) @ 1300 rpm for
peak torque.
New Flyer has also bid to supply the NYCT with 139 60-foot Xcelsior® buses, the result of which has yet
to be advised.
NYCT and MTA Bus Company (together, MTA) comprise the largest transit agency in North America with
over 5,700 transit buses in their fleet and an annual ridership of nearly 670 million. New Flyer began
building buses for MTA more than two decades ago and to date has built over 1900 buses, of which
1353 are actively in service for MTA today.
