City of Torrance in Los Angeles, USGoes for Clean Energy Renewable Natural Gas
The City of Torrance in the southwestern region of Los Angeles County, California is determined to address matters of environmental concern with best practice that includes measures to develop and increase the availability of alternative fuels. It has awarded U.S. gas supplier Clean Energy a new multiyear contract to fuel its fleet of vehicles with renewable natural gas (RNG), branded as Redeem™.
The six-year deal, which calls for 550,000 gasoline gallon equivalents (GGEs), will enable the city to use Clean Energy’s Redeem™, rated up to 70 percent cleaner than diesel by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) and considered the cleanest transportation fuel available. The city made the decision to convert its fleet of buses to RNG as part of its commitment to meeting goals set in their Energy Efficiency Climate Action Plan.
Torrance, which is bordered by some of the highest congested transportation corridors including the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, is deeply committed to ensuring it does its part in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their neighborhoods. The Torrance Transit System recently announced that it had become a 100% Alternative Fuel Bus Fleet.
“The City of Torrance strongly believes we owe it to our community to operate in the most environmentally-responsible manner possible. By fueling our fleet with Redeem, we are able to decrease the amount of GHG emissions that are emitted into the air that everyone breathes, and ensures we help provide a healthy community for our citizens to call home,” said Kim Turner, Director of Transit for the City of Torrance. “Our conversion to a 100% alternative fuel fleet would not have been possible without the partnership we have developed with Clean Energy. We are proud to be able to utilize Redeem to fuel our vehicles.”
Clean Energy completed the construction of the city’s CNG station in January of 2015 in order to support the transit department. The Transit department consumes over 500,000 GGEs per year and the use of CNG has allowed the city to experience nearly a $1 savings for every gallon of fuel.
Clean Energy believes that Redeem™ is the cleanest transportation fuel commercially available in the U.S. according to EPA data regarding carbon emissions for transportation fuel. Redeem™ is a renewable natural gas vehicle fuel, often referred to as biomethane. It is derived from biogenic methane or biogas, which is methane that is naturally generated by the decomposition of organic waste. The methane gas is processed, purified and sent into the interstate natural gas pipeline and made available exclusively to Clean Energy customers.
Biomethane Production
Clean Energy sources Redeem™ biomethane vehicle fuel from a production facility at the McCommas Bluff landfill in Dallas, Texas, which is capable of producing 60,000 gasoline-gallons-equivalent of Redeem each day.
Clean Energy owns and operates a biomethane production facility at the Sauk Trail Hills landfill in Canton, Michigan, and is constructing a third facility at the North Shelby landfill in Millington, Tennessee. Each of these facilities is anticipated to produce 20,000 gasoline-gallons equivalent of biomethane daily when they reach full production.
