Mexico City’s transit trials more CNG buses and other clean fuels choices

A few weeks ago, the mayor of Mexico City, Miguel Ángel Mancera Espinosa, kicked off the operation of public transport vehicles that will run featuring messages of respect for diversity, inclusion and free mobility and other buses equipped with state-of-the-art technology that will serve Metrobus Line 1 passengers.

The new fleet consists of nine bi-articulated buses with capacity of carrying up to 240 passengers and eight modern vehicles aimed at reducing demand during rush hours and introducing the value of sustainability. Guillermo Calderón, head of the Metrobus system, explained that the investment for these new buses (over USD 4.7 million) was made by CISA, RECSA and Vanguardia y Cambio operators.

The manufacturers Dina, Mercedes, Volvo and Scania were chosen to provide the up to date vehicles. For example, an electric-diesel articulated hybrid from Volvo with Euro 6 technology, which will enable fuel savings of 40 percent, is added to a trial phase, in which its functionality and performance will be evaluated.

The renewal of Line 1 service, which covers the route from Indios Verdes to El Caminero station, has a natural gas powered Scania Euro 6. Meanwhile, Dina has delivered a Linner G CNG EPA 2013 and a Linner diesel EPA 04, which have been on test for a period of six months.

“We are carrying out serious projects regarding natural gas vehicles in Veracruz, Jalisco, Mexico City and Querétaro, where we have just signed a contract for more than 100 units,” said Claudia Gutiérrez Reyes, director of Sustainable at DINA Camiones.
